Chapter 38
I stared at it one more time, eager to understand what the motive behind it was, until I caught sight of my reflection in the mirror again, and I stilled.
A hand shot up to my neck, moving my hair to the side, as I examined the giant handprint lines on them.
Did he give me this for soothing?
If it had been from Angelo, it would have been a little understandable….
Oh!!
That must be it. Angelo must have put him up for it. Trying to make up for earlier?
I scoffed, as I threw the stuff forward, not caring in the slightest as it hit the mirror, forming a crack on it.
*******
ANGELO;
“It’s all over the town. Your fallout with Mario’s empire, not to speak of the Bianchi Syndicate. I heard the little brat is teaming up with them to get back at you. And you know what that means?”
I was sat in the living room of the house, with Dok Massimo, former head of the Morano’s Empire, and rival of my father’s Mafia Gang. The man who had taken me in when I was but a lost grieving boy on the streets.
I could vividly recall stepping foot in his lavish mansion that very day I ran from home, fed up, bitter, and angry at the stuff going on with my family.
I had lost my mother due to my father’s carelessness and his hate for her, I was done being under his lair.
It was worse when I had tried to endure some more years with them, hoping that when the time came and I was of age to take over from him…. I could change some things, but then, he chose his illegitimate son over me.. his first fruit.
Which of course I should have been expecting, as he doesn’t have an iota of regard for me. After all, I was the product of a forced marriage with my mother, while Klaus was the illegitimate son of his mistress.
I heaved a heavy sigh, shaking the thoughts away from me, as I tried to focus on the discussion at hand.
“The news is everywhere,” Don continued, as he placed his pipe in his mouth, drawing from it immensely.
“I trust you wouldn’t act rashly to endanger all we have built and worked so hard for all these years.”
” Definitely not, Don. Definitely not.”
He trusted me, and I understood that he needed a bit of reassurance from me. We both knew how much his Empire meant to him. How priceless it is. I wasn’t gonna let him think he had made a bad decision taking me in. I didn’t…so I wouldn’t start now.
His eyes narrowed as he stared at me for a long moment. I noticed his forehead crease in a contemplative mood, and I immediately knew that whatever he wanted to say next was crucial.
I have immense respect for Don Massimo. He was the one who trained me to be who I am today. During his time, he was known all over the city as a no-nonsense and ruthless Mafia Lord. Even my father dared not cross his part. They never see eye to eye.
Aside from the Italian Mafia, the rival gang that had taken my mother, Don Massimo was one my father wouldn’t dare cross, no matter the scenario.
We sat in silence, the minutes stretching. He had arrived with some of his most trusted guards whom he doesn’t joke with, and they stood beside him.
I had given most of my guards some off time…for a few moments. Xavier and Dominic were supposed the only ones standing with me in the room but at this point, they weren’t, as I had sent Xavier off, a few days ago when we caught sight of Angela in a different city.
I wasn’t letting that bitch get away with snitching on me for the second time.
Dominic, on the other hand, was finalizing an important deal I had with some foreigners, which would take effect in a few days.
“Do you remember the very most important rule we have?” Don Massimo finally spoke, ” The number one rule in the Mafia game?”
I nodded, having a faint idea of what he was referring to.
He continued, “You recall the story I told you years ago? About my beloved?”
I heaved a sigh. I could never forget that. Till today, he has blamed himself for what happened to the mother of Eva.
To think that such a man bears a grudge as heavy as this on the father of the boy who appeared at his doorstep that fateful day…. I never knew my father was the one who killed his beloved.
I never knew my father had mutilated her body, while she was pregnant at that.
To date, I was still reeling on the possibility of how Eva had survived. According to the story, Don Massimo told me, she was already having labor pains that fateful day. InTheyere on their way to the hospital when it happened.
Don Massimo wasn’t at home when it started, but the moment he got the call from her that the pain had begun, he left the meeting he was at and sped to her.
However, Rose…that was her name. Rose couldn’t wait any longer. He has to order his most trusted guards to get to her and take her to the hospital immediately.
But unfortunately, there was a snitch. And they were ambushed. By none other, than my father and his crew.
Don had gotten at the scene a bit late, but a moment early just to save his unborn daughter.
“My daughter, Eva, was born at the scene. You know that,” he said to me, ” If anyone knows how dangerous this game could be. It would be me.”
He placed the pipe he was holding onto on a table, his eyes stern, “I keep repeating this story to you because you tend to ignore it a whole lot. You made the same mistake with that girl.. um.. what was her name again?….”
I gritted my teeth, unwilling to recall the painful memories, but I couldn’t.
“Angela,” I said, and he quickly nodded.
” Oh, yes, Angela. Such a snake.” he took a deep breath, his face contorting into a deep frown.
He didn’t know…he didn’t have to know that I had also welcomed her into my house a few weeks back, even after what she had done.
She had snitched on me to my brother, Klaus, and she had done it again.
To think I was once head over heels for that snake. But this time, I would make sure she never had the opportunity to disrespect me that way ever again…even in her dreams.
Don Massimo stared at me again, his gaze lingering for a long moment before he spoke.
“And now, I hear something about a girl who has you wrapped around her finger…. The one you were fucking just moments ago.”
I was taken aback by his words, but managed to stay composed, until his next words.
“You have to get rid of her.”
At that exact moment, footsteps receded down the staircase, and a fuming Eva stomped into the living room.
