Callie immediately felt his presence, the unique scent that belonged to this man.
She caught her breath slightly, feeling his hesitant kisses. Her vision was blocked, and she couldn’t see anything. In the darkness, she heard his hoarse voice say, “Why don’t you want to come with me? Are you with Jaquan?”
Callie tried to calm herself down. “I don’t understand what you’re talking about.”
Nelson suddenly tightened his grip on her hand, causing her to gasp in pain.
He straightened up slightly, holding her chin and looking at her closely, his eyes flickering.
“You appeared with Jaquan’s assistant at the Ellison family. Did I see it wrong?”
Callie looked at him. “And then?”
“Why did you go to the Ellison family?”
She laughed bitterly in the dim light. “Why do you care?”
“Tell me it has nothing to do with Jaquan, and I won’t hold anything against you,” Nelson said, his tone deliberately softening.
Callie knew this was his bottom line. In the past, she would have gone along with it, but now she was unwilling.
“I am with Jaquan.”
Nelson’s anger paused. Before he could speak, she continued, “So what? You found me, took me away, just to humiliate me, threaten me, by any means necessary.”
Nelson didn’t expect her to be so defiant. In her eyes, there was no longer any attachment.
“Say it again,” his voice was a bit softer.
“Just to humiliate me, threaten me, by any means necessary.”
“Say it again.”
“Just to humiliate me…”
“Say it!”
“Just to…”
His hand suddenly released her chin because in the dim light, a single tear fell from the corner of her eye onto the back of his hand.
It was scorching hot.
The veins on the back of Nelson’s hand slowly subsided.
Freed from his grip, Callie could no longer support herself and slid lightly to the ground. She couldn’t control her innate fear of this man and trembled uncontrollably.
Covering her face, Callie finally couldn’t hold back and burst into tears.
“Nelson, we lost our first child. You don’t know how hard it was for me to calm down… My hard-won peace can’t withstand being disrupted by you again… Please let me go, I beg you…”
Nelson’s embrace felt cold. He looked down at this woman’s broken state, feeling as if a giant hand was gripping his heart tightly. He finally understood the original sin he had committed.
She begged him to let her go.
Nelson raised his head, his fringe fluttering, forcing back the tears in his eyes.
Callie hadn’t cried so freely in a long time. She didn’t have the time and didn’t dare to in front of others for fear of worrying them. Even when she cried, she suppressed it as much as possible.
She didn’t know why, but now in front of Nelson, it seemed like she had found the source of all her pain and couldn’t stop crying.
Her crying broke Nelson’s heart. He bent down and gently lifted her onto the bed, continuously soothing her back. “We will have a second child, a third child… I won’t do anything to you. Stop crying, take a breath, okay?”
Through her tear-filled eyes, Callie couldn’t see him clearly and felt a sense of disbelief. Was this really Nelson? When had he ever been so patient?
Nelson comforted her but didn’t let her go.
When Callie finally stopped crying, she sat on the bed sniffling like a child. Nelson poured her a cup of warm water and placed it on the bedside table, just as he used to be considerate.
