On the way, Jane could feel Agnes’s unease and discomfort. Without Tom by her side, it was the first time the young girl was alone with her future mother-in-law, so it was natural for her to feel a bit awkward. Jane chose not to ask too many questions, not wanting to pressure the girl.
Jane simply asked where Agnes lived. When she drove Agnes to her place, she was shocked by the neighborhood. It was a very ordinary area, and she wondered if her daughter-in-law was comfortable living there. The apartments seemed quite small.
But Jane didn’t ask immediately, fearing it might embarrass the girl. “Thank you for driving me home, Mom. Please drive safely. Goodbye,” Agnes said as she got out of the car, holding her bags and bending slightly to wave at the elegant woman in the car window. “And thank you for the gifts.”
“You’re welcome; we’re family,” Jane replied with a big smile, thrilled to hear Agnes call her ‘Mom.’ “Goodbye, goodbye. Get some rest. We have each other on WhatsApp now, so keep in touch!”
“Okay,” Agnes responded, taking a few steps back with her bags as Jane waved and drove off.
Watching the car leave, Agnes turned and walked into the complex. Holding these bags and wearing an expensive orange dress, she felt more burdened than happy. In her current situation, Jane’s kindness felt like a heavy load.
She and Tom had deceived his mother, and Agnes had never lied before in her life, so she felt guilty. She wasn’t sure what Tom’s attitude was either. Had he read the email? Did he know that Bubu was her? If he did, he must hate her now for constantly bothering him.
If someone kept bothering her like that, Agnes would find it annoying too. Ansel was a good example; even without sending over 400 emails, sometimes she found him irritating.
Lost in these thoughts as she exited the elevator, Agnes was startled to see Ansel standing outside her door. She froze, turning pale as their eyes met.
“Bubu, you’re finally back!” Ansel exclaimed joyfully like a child, “Looks like I came at the right time today!”
“What are you doing here?” Agnes wasn’t pleased to see him. Knowing he liked her, she wanted to keep some distance.
“I came to see you! It must be lonely living alone; let me keep you company for a while and talk about work.”
Despite his mature appearance in a suit, Ansel still pursued Agnes with his old style-liking her and visiting whenever he had time, believing that love would grow over time.
“But I’m busy today; I haven’t finished my work,” Agnes made an excuse.
Ansel didn’t mind at all. “At least let me come in for a glass of water? I’ve been standing outside for so long.”
Agnes was kind-hearted and his request wasn’t unreasonable, so she opened the door and let him in.
Ansel followed happily inside. “Bubu, when I get my first paycheck next month, what would you like to eat?”
“It’s still early,” Agnes said as she placed her bags on the sofa.
“Did you go shopping?” Ansel noticed the brand on the bags and his face changed slightly. “You bought luxury goods? These aren’t cheap!”
Agnes hesitated and felt a bit guilty as she glanced at him. “I’ll get you some water.”
Ansel sat on the sofa and casually picked up a price tag from one of the scarves-over $8000 each! Two scarves were nearly $16000! And there were shoes and bags that were even more expensive!
Did she win the lottery?
A sudden thought scared Ansel; a bad idea flashed through his mind. “Agnes, did you find a sugar daddy? How did you suddenly get so much money? This isn’t like you!”
