CHAPTER 1
“Oh god! I’m late!” Cady fumed as she looked down at her watch. She had changed in the cramped quarters of the women’s bathroom of the restaurant she worked at.
She struggled to zip up the skirt and tried to pull it further down. She didn’t remember the skirt she chose to have felt this tight before, but then again time didn’t permit to catch the cross-town train and then commute by bus the other twenty blocks to the college.
There wouldn’t be enough time to catch the second bus should she be late to this one.
Due to her dorm room being clear across town Cady had packed for any mini emergency having been in the girl scouts and a Cosmo girl.
Laundry had been hard to work in due to the scheduling at work. It made setbacks like today horrendous. It was hard enough trying to get the evenings off so she could attend night classes.
White had been her choice of blouse tonight paired with a tiny black vest and skin tight skirt hoping to make a good impression even if it was a bit of a sluttish look. She couldn’t believe how much her feet sweat in the knee high boots and wished flip flops were appropriate school attire.
Cady walked out of the restaurant and was greeted by rain. Her displeasure grew by the second. Why did it have to pick tonight of all nights to rain. Due to clear skies when she left for work she had left her umbrella at home. Luckily there was a shelter for inclement weather for people to stand under while they waited for the various busses.
She would just have to make it across the street without getting soaked by a passing car. Holding her art portfolio above her head as a rain deterrent helped shield her from getting too wet.
She thankfully made it across the street. Although nothing could have prepared her for the idiot drivers driving through the puddles trying to splash water up on anyone caught outside since the opening for the bus shelter left them exposed to the inclement rains and area traffic who whizzed by.
Already soaked to the bone, Cady was more than irritated by a late crosstown bus. This was not the impression she had wanted to give to her instructors, especially it being the first day of classes.
She had finally found the right building and the cold winds had started to blow as she searched the outside doors for class room numbers finally locating the right room. She tried the door handle and it was locked, just her luck.
She tried to peer through the window on the door. Jumping in any heel was dangerous to begin with and at the rate her luck was going her normal bubbly self was stretched beyond its means. She tried to see on her tiptoes first. She saw three teachers speaking to a few students in the room.
Cady knocked on the door and waved at the instructors. She didn’t get an answer. She continued to knock as she tried to gain the attention of someone in the class. After pounding on the door for nearly five minutes straight one of the other students was instructed to get the door.
“Oh, thank you so much. The door must have been jammed or something.” Cady said to the young man around her age who opened the door. She was all hyper to finally be in the class room.
“And who do we owe this disruption to?” The short stocky built man with a bald spot around the crown on his head asked. She assumed he was the main teacher.
“Hi! I’m Cady, Cady Mil…”Cady tried to introduce herself and apologize for being late before being rudely interrupted by the man who obviously had a Napoleon complex.
“Ah, yes Miss Miller. I see that you haven’t bothered to read the syllabus that we have thoughtfully provided you to help ensure a swift transition to the college way of life here have you.”
“Can any of you please tell me what information you might find on the syllabus we sent out to each of you students? Mr. Drake asked. One student raised his hand.
“Yes, Mr. Barrows” he said pointing to the young man in the back of the room.
“That upon an untimely arrival past the start of class any student not in the classroom forfeits the right to be inclusive of that day’s lecture and will therefore be locked out of said lecture hall until the teachers deem a fit time to reopen the lecture hall doors.” The student recited near verbatim to what was on the syllabus.
“But sir, it’s raining outside. Where are the students supposed to go during crappy weather?” Cady said looking for a bit of sympathy.
“The student commons is a popular site on campus.” Mr. Drake said as he sighed over having been interrupted in such a way.
“Have a seat Miss Miller, we will discuss your future in this class afterwards.”
“Yes sir.”Cady said as she began to wonder just how she was going to talk her way out of this. These classes were mandatory to her future.
There was no way she was going to continue to work at a rundown mom and pop restaurant for the rest of her life. Just till her student loans came in and her finances eased up so she could look for something better.
“Good evening everyone, I’m Mr. Nelson. Mr. Drake is the Anatomy teacher, I will be Mr. Grier’s assistant art teacher. We decided due to the few students requesting night courses that the individualized courses would be advantageous if efficiently taught together in a real world scenario.
As for me I was a forensic specialist with the Miami-Dade PD for 15 years before I signed on for tenure here last fall. I also have an Art degree.” The rather tall, broad shouldered man with salt and pepper hair and a goatee stated.
