The police car eventually dropped Darnell off at a place where he could catch a taxi.
Judith was worried that the one-eyed beggar and his gang might seek revenge on Darnell. Darnell, on the other hand, asked Kameron if police officers could have tattoos.
Judith didn’t want to get too entangled with him. She reluctantly gave him a ride and watched as he hopped into a taxi. Judith wished she could shoot him twice. Over the years, countless people wanted to strangle her to vent their anger, but the one she wanted to strangle was Darnell.
“Captain Meech, we’ve checked.”
As the police car slowly started moving forward, Kameron, sitting in the front passenger seat, turned around with a tablet in hand.
“Those beggars are all members of the Apex. The one-eyed beggar’s eye isn’t actually blind.”
“He belongs to Gisselle’s Jade Crew, under the Apex, and is named Hugo. He also has a cousin named Desmond.”
He further explained, “Jade Crew specializes in swindling and stealing. It’s a major source of income for the Apex.”
“These people have caused immense suffering to ordinary citizens. In Horizon Yard alone, they forcefully panhandle thousands of dollars every day.”
Kameron smiled wryly, “It’s like collecting tolls. The police want to intervene, but few people report it for just a few dollars.”
Judith spoke coldly, “These bastards are parasites. They have hands and feet but don’t work. They just extort money as professional beggars. I wish I could get rid of them.”
“Sooner or later, there will be a major shake-up in the underworld.”
A cold glint appeared in Kameron’s eyes as he continued softly, “They suffered a lot tonight. They got beaten up, had their money taken by that man without even a coin left, and still had to say thank you. Hugo and his gang must be fuming tonight.”
Kameron genuinely praised, “That man is really something.” Then he squinted slightly. “I feel like I’ve seen him somewhere before.”
He had briefly seen Darnell during the confrontation with Carson but couldn’t recall it immediately.
“Hugo and his gang are swindlers and thieves. Darnell is also a big troublemaker. The more you see him, the more infuriated you’ll be.”
Judith seemed unwilling to let anyone know about Darnell’s involvement with the Carson case, so she quickly changed the subject. “His ways are wicked and despicable.”
“If I get a chance, I’ll make sure to deal with that bastard thoroughly.”
Kameron was slightly taken aback and didn’t quite understand her anger towards Darnell.
“By the way, how is Carson doing now?”
Judith stopped discussing Darnell and became more serious. “Has he woken up? He was fine yesterday and this morning. Why did he bite his tongue?”
After being captured with a bullet wound in his knee, Carson was sent to the hospital for treatment. He woke up yesterday afternoon and refused to respond to any police questions but didn’t seem extreme in his emotions. He had an attitude of “kill me if you can”. However, this afternoon he suddenly changed.
While having dinner, he bit his tongue off halfway and almost bled to death.
Kameron quickly took over the topic. “We just received news that Carson has been rescued and is out of danger.”
“But his tongue couldn’t be retrieved from his stomach. Even if it could be taken out, it can’t be reattached because he bit it too hard. He might never speak again.”
“This guy is really ruthless.”
Judith spoke coldly, “But he’s too naive. Without a tongue, he still has hands and feet. He can still confess.”
Kameron’s face showed helplessness. “But regardless, losing his tongue presents an obstacle for us. Getting a confession will take time.”
Judith returned to the main topic. “Why did he bite his tongue out of nowhere?”
“We haven’t figured that out yet.”
Kameron let out a long breath. “But I received information that Steve Swain has arrived in Whiteville. It might be related to him.”
Judith’s eyes narrowed slightly. “Steve Swain? Zane’s spoiled son?”
Kameron nodded lightly and smiled, “Yes, Zane’s son. But calling him spoiled is an exaggeration. Steve does have some capabilities.”
“He owns ten companies worth over a billion dollars each and has distanced himself from both Swain Group and Zane early on. That’s why he escaped police investigation this time.”
Clearly, he had investigated Steve.
“It’s not about him being smart. It’s Zane being cunning.”
Judith had also reviewed many files related to the Swain Group’s case, so she had some understanding of Zane and Steve.
“Zane separated his children early on for situations like this, so they could stay safe.”
“This also leaves him with some reliable rescue forces.”
“Steve is ruthless and arrogant but won’t amount to much.”
Judith sighed softly, “But Zane’s daughter, Hana Swain, is remarkable and shouldn’t be underestimated.”
Kameron was surprised. “That Harvard graduate? She studied abroad early on with excellent grades and has a good social image. Could she be dangerous?”
Judith nodded. “Growing up in such a family, she remains innocent? I find it hard to believe.”
“In any case, assign people to monitor them closely as soon as they enter Whiteville.”
Her eyes gleamed. “Although Whiteville isn’t the Swain family’s turf and our task force isn’t based here…”
“Cortez, Carson, and Abbigail are all in Whiteville. This will inevitably give Zane opportunities for chaos. Steve arriving in Whiteville is strong evidence of this.”
“I suspect that this morning’s journalist shooting incident and Carson biting his tongue are related to Steve’s arrival.”
Kameron whispered, “Could this morning’s journalist shooting incident be related to Zane?”
Judith let out a long breath as she looked at the dim lights ahead. “Her name is Rebecca Boone, one of Abbigail’s trusted aids.”
“Compared to the Lonsdale brothers killing Cortez for silencing purposes, Rebecca’s shooting seems more like revenge, a brutal retaliation from Zane against Abbigail’s heavy blow.”
“Unfortunately, we don’t have concrete evidence now. Otherwise, we could add murder charges against Zane.”
Kameron rubbed his head with a bitter smile. “I really hope this case doesn’t involve Whiteville. It’s a $60 billion case involving too many people, a serious case.”
“No matter how many people get involved, we will find them out.”
Judith leaned back in her chair. “Increase efforts to catch this morning’s two shooters.”
Ding!
As Kameron fell silent momentarily, his phone suddenly rang. After putting on an earpiece and listening briefly, he quickly reported,
“Captain Meech, we received news that two hours ago at a bar, the Twilight, Steve got into trouble over jealousy issues. Someone smashed a bottle over his head.”
Judith was slightly surprised. “Someone dared smash Steve’s head? Who did it? What happened to the perpetrator?”
Although Zane had been arrested, the Swain family was still influential. They also had many desperados under their command. No one dared underestimate the Swains.
Whoever smashed Steve’s head would either be caught by security, or the police, or blocked by the Swain’s family bodyguards.
“We don’t know yet.”
Kameron shook his head. “The lights were off at that time. The perpetrator escaped amidst chaos and also hacked into the bar’s surveillance system, wiping the footage clean.”
“However, witnesses described the attacker wearing a red shirt, shorts, and gray sneakers.”
At this point, Kameron suddenly stopped talking. It seemed familiar somehow.
Darnell?
Judith instantly thought of that man. A shiver ran down her spine. How could everything be related to that bastard?
Then she asked, “Where is Steve now?”
Kameron immediately responded, “The Harmony Hospital. The Swain family indirectly holds significant shares there.”
A glimmer flashed through Judith’s eyes. “Let’s go see Steve.”
She wasn’t concerned about his injuries but wanted details, to confirm if it was Darnell’s doing. If so, she’d say…
Well done!
