Stephanie’s POV
Ive overheard everything that lord Bernard and John had talked about Reyna, and I felt bad for her. I could imagine what was going on in Reyna’s mind at that particular time. I decided to go to her room and speak with her, knowing fully well that she needed a friend.
Knock! knock! knock!
“The door is opened,” I heard Reyna say to me. I opened the door and went Inside. I found Reyna on the bed, and I immediately knew she had been crying.
“Are you okay?” I asked her.
“Why are you here?” Reyna asked.
I took my seat by her side on the bed even if she didn’t ask me to, and then I took her hands into mine.
I noticed the room was disorganized, and it hinted to me something. Was Reyna really preparing to leave the pack?
“You’re not leaving, are you?” I looked at Reyna, seeing the vulnerability in her eyes.
“Why shouldn’t I? No one wants me. Maybe I’m cursed or something,” Reyna’s tears flowed.
“Don’t talk like that, Reyna.” I tried to hush her but Reyna wasn’t ready to listen to me.
“I blame my mother,” she kept on crying. “She should have just killed me as a baby, instead of allowing me to grow up in a world where no one wants me.”
“Hush…., don’t say that,”
“Stephanie…” she wiped her tears. “I don’t want to go back to my father.
“Why not?” I asked, as I could begin to feel that there was actually something Reyna wasn’t letting on. I didn’t want to assume she was hiding something, but I just couldn’t help but feel that she was.
“This should be a secret between you and I,” Reyna sighed, sniffing in. She sat up, and then let out another sigh.
I steeled myself, waiting to hear what Reyna wanted to say to me.
“You have to promise me that you won’t tell this to anyone.” Reyna stressed.
“I promise you,” I said, assuring her that I won’t tell anyone about it. I had no idea what Reyna wanted to tell me, but the fact that she was making me promise her not to let anyone else know about it, was enough to convince me that it was something worth keeping confidential.
“I know why my father wants me back in the pack.” Reyna said, her voice fairly above a whisper.
“Why?” I asked, my curiosity piqued.
“Before asking me to leave, father had given me two options,” Reyna continued, heightening my curiosity.
“What were they?”
“He told me it’s either I leave the pack because I was an embarrassment to him, or he’ll have me married away to the son of one of his friends.”
“So, you took the option of leaving instead of being given away in marriage.” I looked at Reyna, waiting to hear more of what she had to say.
“I did, and I didn’t.” Reyna replied, and that got me confused. I didn’t understand what she meant by she did and she didn’t, and I wanted her to explain.
“I don’t understand,” I admitted.
“I left on my own because I knew my father too well.”
“Know him too well? How?”
“Father was going to marry me off and I didn’t want that. I knew he wasn’t going to let me leave even if he was disappointed with the fact that I was not really making him proud as a werewolf.” Reyna said.
“I don’t get you Rey. Why didn’t you tell the Alpha the truth? Why did you have to lie? What if the brothers find out that you lied to them?” I asked, concerned, not just for Reyna, but for the brothers and for the safety of the pack.
“I didn’t lie, Steph. Marrying me off was the same thing as throwing me out of the pack. It was like sentencing me to death while I was still alive. I had to leave.”
“But you should have told the brothers the truth, at least John deserved to know. He has shown you nothing but love since you arrived here and then, you’re keeping something so important away from him.” I said, trying to make Reyna understand the complexity of the situation.
John was in a difficult situation from what I had overheard between him and Lord Bernard. I believe if he knew the truth, he’d be able to do something about the message he had received from Reyna’s father.
“But I believe telling John the truth would be better. At least if he knew what was at stake, he’d be able to defend you even before the lords.”
“I don’t want that Steph. I would leave.”
“And where do you plan to go? You think another pack would welcome you with open arms?” I asked.
“It doesn’t matter Steph. Instead of being the reason why the safety of the pack would be jeopardized, I’d rather leave.” Reyna had made up her mind, and I could see that it would be useless trying to talk her out of it.
“Thank you Steph. I really wish we could spend more time together as friends. Thank you,” she managed a smile.
I felt flattered. Reyna calling me a friend, really meant a lot to me even if she wasn’t aware. Reyna was the first person who’d call me her friend, and it really touched my heart.
She wasn’t the only one who had secrets to share, but I wasn’t sure if I could share mine with her, especially now that she was planning to leave the pack.
“You’re welcome,” I returned the smile.
“Come on, I have some snacks. If you don’t mind, you could come over to my room to grab a bite,” I went ahead to offer.
“I’d really like that,” she stood up,
I stood too, and then we hugged. I remembered my sister, as we both shared the warmth of our embrace. I missed having her around.
“Let’s go!” I was at the door.
“Wait for me,” we both laughed.
