Minions of Rachel?
Interesting. I thought, taking another bite of the chocolate bar, the last one actually.
My stomach grumbled when I was done, but I ignored it and stood up from the chair. I was done hearing them speak.
I walked to the dustbin that was just next to the door, and dropped the wrap inside.
“But to be honest, she might not go with the idea. As a matter of fact, she hasn’t responded to any of my texts since yesterday, or is it only me?”
I paused, wanting to hear this.
“Not at all. I think the queen might have confiscated her phone, or she just doesn’t want to talk.”
“Well, I don’t blame her. She had been humiliated in front of the whole school. If you remembered, she hadn’t said a word after the cafeteria incident. Reasoning it now, I don’t think her mother had seized her phone. She just doesn’t want to talk with us. Perhaps, taking the days to process what exactly had happened. I’m still not sure why she didn’t fight back.”
“Yes, me too. Now that I think of it, I had seen when Raul had given the girl a key this afternoon on her arrival. I don’t think her magic is real or available, she had just been spouting gibberish.”
A slight pause.
Probably they were thinking about the new information.
This had me bringing out my phone.
If these three were planning to do something wrong to me, I might as well record them as evidence, should they misbehave. I pressed on the recording button.
“You both are right. Now that I think of it, her locker in school uses a key. If Raul had known of this, why hadn’t he stopped her from bullying his sister?”
“Probably doesn’t want to be seen as a bad guy to the girl. My bet is that he is trying to get into her pants. Do that and dump her just like his brother had done to that girl, what was her name again?”
“Zande…”
There was laughter amongst them, a subdued laughter which grated on my nerves so much that I wanted to barge into the room, but then I wouldn’t be able to do anything. I had no magic, or strength.
And then I needed to listen, to know really what had happened to Zande, Laura’s first prodigy, that had died a stupid death.
“Zande had felt on top of the world, when Duke had been on her case like she was the only girl in the world. She had made it worse by rejecting him in front of the entire school, for the lame reason that he was always with girls. I think it was that night that Duke had vowed to get her, and then to deal with her. Because if you remember clearly, that had been the time he had started dumping his girlfriends, or is it sex-mates?”
“You are right. And he had finally gotten his chance when she had gotten pregnant?”
There was a tangible pause. I shifted on my feet, feeling a tear prick my eyelids. Were all guys the same? Why couldn’t they deal with rejection? Why did they turn to monsters when they were rejected?
Adam’s was even worse. I hadn’t rejected him, but he had almost killed me because his father had asked him to apologize to me.
Why were these royals like this? Who told them they had the right to do this? To toy with the feelings of the opposite sex?
Laura had mentioned that the queen had denied knowing Zande’s pregnancy. But if the queen had been unaware, and the son had claimed the same too, obviously he had been lying. But how had that spread to Rachel’s minions?
“How did you know that? Where did you hear from, Chyra?”
Okay, Chyra was the name of one of them. Noted.
“Rachel had told me herself. Although she had made me swear secrecy first. You guys should keep it to yourself.” The one called Chyra spoke, and I marked her voice.
I would need it to identify her when I stepped into the room. That would be if she spoke then. Or maybe in school. But I marked it, and stored that tiny whiny sound in my head.
“Wow, so her death wasn’t a coincidence?”
“To be honest, I think that the Queen must have been behind it. Rachel hadn’t said so, but I had just connected the dots myself. Duke must have told the family about what had happened, and the Queen must have told him to break up with the girl, which he had. The war had been the perfect opportunity. The Queen had convinced Zande to go to the battle and utilize the skills she had been trained with…I had seen them one of the days that I had gone to visit Rachel in the palace. I had managed to catch the queen convincing the girl that her skills would be needed in battle. Zande had refused, you know, I remember, citing the healer’s discontent with that, but the Queen had been very persuasive. When I saw her join the queue of warriors going for the battle, I had known then, that she might not come back alive.”
Chyra was disrupted by another of the girls.
“Yes, I remember now. But I had thought that it had been because she had been trained by the Queen. I would say it had helped Duke’s wooing of her into his trap. Well, it seems that we had all been wrong. That’s cruel, if I would admit it. I didn’t like Zande, but I didn’t wish her death in the war.”
“At least she had been celebrated as a hero here.” Chyra chipped in, and they laughed.
I would have entered then, if I didn’t hear the next statement.
“And now, she is training Diana specially too.”
I felt my ears perk the more when Diana’s name was mentioned.
“Who is Diana?” Chyra asked.
“Chyra, you are joking right?”
There was a pregnant silence, where I heard two scoffs, two girls not believing that Chyra didn’t know who Diana was. But why must she know Diana?
“Gena, I am serious. Who is Diana?”
Gena, the second girl’s name. I listened to mark her voice.
“She is your cousin, Chyra. How could you not know that?”
