The breakfast was eaten in excitement. It was like in the past. When they were usually together, those years when Adrian was still the quiet young man who he used to be.
When Anna’s evil was still hidden. When Ava Leon hadn’t been married into the home. They felt that way again except that the place of Anna was left empty.
When Adrian left the house, he drove to the prison to see his mother. He hadn’t seen her for days. After she left his room that day, he said he wouldn’t recognise her as his mother if she didn’t give herself over to the police.
When Anna Lester stepped out, dressed in a prison dress, she looked thin and pale. Her hair became more scanty. The sight of her makes it obvious that she was suffering from cancer.
He remembered coming to see Ava that year. He was hostile towards her. He accused her about grandfather, he threatened to ruin her parents, he called her names.
And it was all false. Everything done from a perspective of self willed. Now, staring at his mother, he would not accuse her. Just told her she did the right thing to open up to the authorities.
“How are you Adrian?” Anna asked, her voice still alright but she looks far from being alright. Her eye socket is now deeply introverted. Her skin wrinkled like she was in her seventies.
“I’m fine. How are you doing too?” Adrian asked. He looked away. He couldn’t bear to look at his mother in that state. Who would say that the beautiful vibrant woman, Anna Lester has been reduced to what sits in front of him?
“I’m doing fine. How’s your father? Is he alright? Has he overcome the pain, the scandal that came along with all of these?” Anna asked.
She knew her confession was going to shake the entire New Jersey. Any news concerning Lester is a hot news, a breaking news that many want to read or listen to. Both friends and foes, they all will help in spreading it very fast.
“We all are coping with the present situation” Adrian said and paused. Conscious that he has limited time with her, he said “You did the right thing Mom, that you opened up to your crimes.
Now you’re not afraid of being discovered for anything, that is peace. I don’t know how long you will be locked in here, but I’ll see how I can get dad to help out along with me to reduce your jail terms” Adrian Lester stuttered.
Anna sniffled and said “Your dad’s lawyer was here. We’re divorced now. I am not expecting anything from him but you. If you can do anything to reduce it, please do.
I’m due for my second chemo, but I couldn’t afford it. My money and everything has been confiscated by your dad and I have to do it. I’m not feeling alright at all.
Don’t turn your back on me. No matter what happens, I’m still your mom. Your words made me give myself up. I was afraid of losing you, or seeing you hate me.
I was more scared for days, that you will never come to check on me. If there’s anything else that I have in this life, it’s you and your love. You’re the most important thing to me now and I can’t afford to lose it…” Anna Lester stuttered and broke down in tears.
As Adrian was being driven to the company, he kept sniffing quietly. Divorced. They are divorced and he was going to sign the divorce paper too and send it to Aurora.
His life went in the direction his parents’ life went. This is not the life he wants for himself, nor for his parents and yet, that’s the best at the moment.
He understands why his dad got divorced with his Mom. If she did all that because she wanted to have him, he would let her grow old without him. And it’s worth it.
Whatever one gains through subtlety and wickedness, how can that thing last forever? It never would. It will vanish away suddenly, at the middle of someone’s life, leaving the person in the worst state that he or she was, at the beginning.
When he got to the company, the employees all concentrated on their jobs. The times of frivolity were over. The CEO was back and now, with all the scandal that flew around days ago, no one knows his mood.
Adrian first, got the copy of the divorce paper, signed his part. Sealed it and asked Clem to deliver it to Aurora with an acknowledged copy sent back to him.
Then he concentrated on his work. Things went normal for the whole of that day and Adrian was happy that he was getting his sanity back.
That evening, in X-city, Aurora received a courier. Her mother, Nancy Blake had received it and kept it for her. When she got back from her shift duty, she decided to call Patrick.
The latter said, Adrian is fine and she needs not bother about him. Aurora was pleased with the news and next asked him what he thinks about their partnership.
Contrary to what she’d expected, Patrick said he was ready to proceed with it. He’d been able to put some things in order and they could kick start already.
Aurora was excited. Finally, Patrick agreed. Everything is ready, he could start and employ more hands. She would ensure that he becomes on par with Adrian in less than two years.
Then she glanced at her bedside table and saw an envelope. She soon hung up with Patrick, satisfied and pleased and picked up the envelope and glanced at it, who could have sent it?
She carefully tore it open and pulled the papers out, glancing at it, she sighed softly. It’s finally going to be over for good. Against his earlier decision, he was granting her request.
She read through it. Saw his beautiful, neat signature that appeared too complex to be copied. Adrian is charming in looks and now, in his handwriting. The only thing that soiled his personality is his heart.
He’s mean and has a stone cold heart. And that makes him appear as the ugliest man she’d ever known. She ruled out part of the compensation. She doesn’t need it.
Aurora signed the papers.
