I shook my head.
Adam was about to talk more, seeing that he had grasped the attention of a Diana, who had perhaps never seen a waterfall before, except in books, when I shook my head vehemently. That suggestion wasn’t going to fly.
“I can’t, Adam. I am not interested in seeing your waterfall.” I voiced my thoughts-when he started talking about a secret cave in a garden.
Adam was taken aback at my resistance. He had obviously thought that the new girl would be excited at the idea.
Well, I was sure that all the girls, who he had taken there, had been; I had been, when he had talked about the secrecy of the cave.
I felt like laughing at myself, at my goofiness and naivety then.
“But Dora, why?” Diana asked, pouting her lips. “I really want to see the secret cave with the waterfall. I ..”
“You can go then, Diana. But I can not. You know the way home.” I stated mordantly, before looking ahead, and walking away from them.
However, I hadn’t moved five steps further when Diana grabbed my left hand.
“You were really going to leave me with that pervert? That’s cruel of you.” She muttered, obviously more annoyed that I had thought she would prefer Adam’s company to mine.
“I know I am damn curious about the waterfall, but no way was I going to go without you. What if he tries something stupid there? I don’t trust him.”
I laughed then, gripping her hand tighter, and increasing my walking pace, not caring if Adam was still left in the position where we had left him, or if he had stalked away in anger at having his efforts dispelled.
Yet, I knew that he wasn’t one to touch children. Girls were at his beck and call. He wouldn’t stoop that low. Would he?
“I am sorry, Diana. I just didn’t want to cut your fun short.”
Diana clucked her tongue. “Fun my foot. The only reason I am tolerating his presence is because of you.”
I nodded. And the only reason why I am tolerating his presence is because of my revenge. A plan was already forming in my mind.
**
The short journey back home was quite quiet. The meeting was probably still going on. I thought, taking a look at the familiar scenery that surrounded the pack. We were but a few miles away from home.
“Ma.. Dora..” Diana called slowly, her steps slowing down as she switched between my real name and the fake one.
I slowed down too, wondering what she wanted to talk about, for we have been walking in silence for a while.
“Did you know of the cave that Adam had been talking about?” She looked up at me as she asked the question, her eyes filled with the knowledge that I know about the cave.
Was my reaction that obvious? Well, I hope that it wasn’t to Adam. It would make him more suspicious of my movements.
“Don’t worry. I have put the cloaking mechanism over us. No one would be able to hear us speak.” Diana assured me.
I inhaled deeply then, before reverting my eyes forward. Well, it seems to be time to let another cat out of the bag.
“Yes, I know of the secret cave. It was actually the spot where Adam had convinced me that he loved me, and had gone further to mark me. I had believed him. The belief hadn’t even lasted for a day.” I cussed then, kicking an idle stone that had been on my path.
Remembering the day and the events that had transpired, had me kicking the sand again. A day relationship? I hadn’t even thought of it that way until now. I had dated Adam for just a day.
Does that even qualify as a date? That was a one night stand, or rather an afternoon stand. I had quenched his thirst for me, and had gotten disposed of. What a shame.
“He is a prick.” Diana stated, and I chuckled, finding it amusing that she would call Adam a prick. Her tone was even funnier.
“Don’t worry, Maya. We will get him back. I will help you get him back.”
I nodded with a smile, stopping on my tracks when I perceived Adam’s scent. What was this again? He wouldn’t leave my thoughts?
I cussed, thinking that my mind was playing tricks on me, until the effect of the scent got thicker. Then I turned aside, only to see Adam right behind us.
Oh my god. Thank goddess that Diana had used a cloaking spell. The prick would have heard us otherwise.
Oh my god. I screamed mentally again. I am sure, from the look on Diana’s face, that she was happy that she had been thoughtful enough to cloak our speech, but I also knew that she was annoyed.
“Why are you following us, Mr.? Isn’t that creepy? Don’t you have a pack to help your father run?” She asked Adam, folding her arms across her chest, her eyes a blazing fury.
Adam furrowed his eyebrows, not understanding the swift change in the mood of Diana.
He must have thought her a fan of his already. I snorted at the thought, grabbing his attention away from Diana.
“Are you going to answer our question, or are you going to keep gaping at us?”
Diana at it again.
“I am sorry. I just thought I would walk you home.”
Diana cackled menacingly, before I could even sport a reaction, amusing me.
“We are fine by ourselves, gentleman. I think you should find your way. We are not in need of your services.”
Adam opened his mouth, probably to say something stupid, but I wasn’t having nothing of it.
“Adam, remember that you promised not to repeat the embarrassment. This is embarrassing now. You should go.” I said, retaining the bland smile on my lips, when the cold mask fell back to his face.
Now that was his true self, not this pretentious chatty shadow.
“As you wish…” He stated coldly, and walked away.
