“Why you?” Adam’s voice sounded deranged and fearful.
Even though I felt like sleeping, succumbing to that thick darkness surrounding me, I tried to keep my ears open. I needed to hear his reason.
“Because you are shit, Maya. Shit. No one cares about you. Oh, wait… you thought I did, because I paid you some attention?” He paused and started laughing maniacally.
This time, Noah and Daniel joined him.
Their voices were echoing, or didn’t they know? They would attract much attention with this.
Well, they could continue or not. At this point, I didn’t care. I just wanted to know why Adam, who had seemed in love with me, was so cruel now; that he called what we had shared together, paying a little attention to me.
We literally shared minds. I had seen his shortcomings and fears. Or had all that been a lie?
Had it just been part of the bigger picture? If that was so, then they must be more crazed and psychotic than I had thought.
“Oh, Maya, why did you think I became calm and decided to get to know you more? It was because my father demanded it of me! So, you see, I had to obey to keep my position as the next in line for the King, and maintain my always neat reputation. But that came at a price. I vowed to get my revenge on you, for putting me in that tight corner, and for making my family apologize to a nobody like you.”
He chuckled darkly.
I whimpered despondently.
‘Yes, Maya. This happening here was why I befriended you and made you feel like a queen, even at the party. Well, I stretched it out so that I could annoy my father. Did you see how angry he was that I was defending you? That had been so beautiful,” He said, jabbing his brothers softly by their sides.
I was dumbfounded and shamed. Even as I took in breaths that were barely there, I cursed myself for being so naive to think that a lycan prince would ever be interested in a nobody like me. What had I been thinking?
“But it had been sweet while it lasted, you know. You didn’t taste bad for a nobody,” I heard him drawl.
I clenched my teeth, yelping slightly in pain when he placed his leg on my lower back.
“But I think this is where it ends for you. I have had enough use of you. It’s time you went to be with your ancestors, whoever those might be. You know that you are not from this pack, right? Hell, we don’t even know if…”
A slap from the stick landed on my shoulders, causing me to scream in pain-I had been slipping into oblivion. My whole body was scorched with bruises now.
I wasn’t seeing clearly either because the blood had covered my eyes and face, and I had no plans of wiping it away. There was no use.
I was okay with hearing just their voices. I didn’t want to see the cruelty on their faces as they snuffed the life out of me. I had seen enough to last me the journey to wherever I was going.
“Keep up with me!” Adam shouted. “You go nowhere unless I say so. So stay awake until I am done. You were the one that wanted to know the reason why you are here, right? Well, you are dying because you crossed your limits! Daring to make me apologize to you? You deserve to die. I would have loved to add your friend, Naomi, to the list, but she is not an easy prey. Her father is a council member, after all. Well, at least you can see the difference between the both of you. She is somebody, while you are a nobody.”
Naomi, my good friend, I wouldn’t see her again. I wondered what she would think if she found out that I was dead or that I was missing.
“Don’t worry, she won’t miss you. No one will. You are barely noticed, after all. Your fate wouldn’t be connected to us either. How can it? We had been fierce advocates for your release.”
The trio laughed, maniacally, upsetting my already throbbing ears.
Tears slipped from my eyes and mixed with the blood, but I could taste the salt of it as it trickled past my lips.
I had been so naive, but even if I had been aloof to Adam’s advances, these three would have found another way to melt out the death punishment on me. I had always known they were cruel, but I hadn’t known the extent. Now, I knew. They were crazy-ass murderers.
“Bastards…” I muttered with all the remaining strength I had.
“What did you say?” That was Noah. I felt him come closer, felt him tap the stick on my back.
So, he was the one with the stick.
“I said, you all are bastards!” I screamed, but I doubted that would be recorded as a scream, but it was all I could muster, knowing fully well that they could hear it.
“Well, it seems she is ready for it. Give it to her then. Be fast about it too. We need to go before they discover we are missing,” Adam mentioned, before taking a step back.
He glanced at me for one second before turning around and walking toward the path from which we had come.
A kick came flying at my cheek as I watched him depart, followed by blows from the stick. I was dying now, I could feel the darkness closing in. It was getting enticing by the passing minute.
“You think she is done?”
I couldn’t tell who asked now. My brain must have gone numb from all the blows. I don’t even know how I am still able to hear them.
“I don’t know. She should be. She is wolfless. But hit her one more time. To be sure.”
I felt the swoosh of the stick and the cracking of my head before the darkness engulfed me; just at the same time that I promised vengeance on the three sons of the lycan king, if by some miracle I got reincarnated or came back from the dead.
