At Claire’s request, the Lycan king nodded his head, as if assimilating the wisdom in her statement. I almost scoffed but for the love of my life.
That I was fucking Adam didn’t mean I could go around behaving like a member of his family.
From the lycan’s attitude since he saw me at the party, I was sure that I wouldn’t be welcomed if Adam should officially introduce me to them as his mate.
I didn’t blame the king though. I had no wolf, and I was an omega. I wasn’t even from the pack, so my parents and origin were unknown.
“Claire just gave a brilliant suggestion. Maya, and Naomi of course, find the little girl who you claim had told you to leave the party hall, and maybe, just maybe, we might put your account into consideration.” The lycan king mentioned, gesturing at me with his head to commence with the search.
When I received the king’s approval to search for the girl, I sighed, in relief.
My eyes coincided to search around for the girl, but with every passing minute where I saw no girl of that stature or size, my hope and relief weakened.
I could see the same worry and anxiousness on Naomi’s face. She had joined me in the searching process, even going as far as paving ways in the multitude of people that had come for my send off.
I noticed that Adam was darting glances between I and Naomi, the hope in his eyes dwindling when our quest for the unknown girl seemed to be of no use. She was nowhere to be found.
How was that possible? How could a girl, not more than twelve years old, disappear from the party, without any parent or guardian?
“Did you know which family she belonged to?” That was Adam. He had stepped closer to me, his beautiful eyes boring down on mine like I was the only one of importance to him, not minding the glare that his father was throwing at his back.
“No, I don’t know.” I murmured, my eyes returning to Claire who was wearing a victorious smirk on her lips.
She was looking so sure that we won’t find the girl. Why?
Her eyes.
Those eyes of hers had been peculiar, similar to the little girl. No wonder I had been so fixated on her eyes. The both seemed familiar, actually the same, but how was that possible?
Even Claire’s family members did not have that feature in their eyes, making me wonder where Claire had gotten hers from. Her father saw it as a gift from heaven. I usually thought she was a gift from another man to her mother.
So, who could the girl be? What could this mean? Why do they look so much alike? And why does Claire seem so sure that we wouldn’t find the girl? I bit my lips unconsciously, only reverting to the present when Adam tapped me by the arm.
I noticed then that Naomi was just beside Adam. She must have given up.
“Did you find her?”
She shook her head sadly.
I returned my gaze to Claire again. She was still smirking. Her minions were on the happy side too.
“Did you find the said girl?” I heard the lycan king ask both Naomi and I, but silence greeted him.
“I asked a question, didn’t I?” The King stepped closer to us.
Quickly, Naomi gave an answer.
I think she is more afraid of the king than I am, or was I just dumb?
“No, we didn’t find her. She must have left the party.”
“A little girl leaving the party? How is that possible? According to your description, she wouldn’t be more than twelve.” That was Claire’s mother. Her mate supported the statement with the nodding of his bald head.
“That’s true. Then, it is possible that you both have lied to cover up the truth.” Mr Brekan said, unmoved as Naomi and I shook our heads, refusing to be pushed under the bus for a crime we didn’t commit.
“They are not lying. And as I said before, Maya hasn’t been here before. So, there is no way she would know the house or the identity of the necklace. There must be a misunderstanding somewhere.” Adam mentioned calmly, although the steely resolution in his voice was still there.
It gave me hope that I wouldn’t be killed.
Adam’s statement, however, brought a tense silence in the hall. I looked at the lycan king. He was brooding.
He sighed thereafter, and looked at his beta, who shook his head, before glaring at me. I looked away from the man’s hostile face.
“My daughter can not lie. She won’t say what she didn’t see.” He said, reaffirming what he had mentioned earlier.
“Well…” The King cleared his throat, his eyes surveying the crowd before landing on me; the hard glint was still here.
He was regretting throwing the party. I literally read it off the hostile expression on his face when our eyes met.
“There are two opposing sides, which I can’t discount. Investigations would be conducted on this theft, but before then, Maya Holins would be taken to the confinement room for now. She would stay there until further notice. If she is found guilty, she will bear the necessary punishment, but if not, she will be set free, and be allowed to leave the pack as scheduled. Guards lead her to the confinement room.” He commanded.
My eyes widened immediately, going tro and fro the room, from my mother to Naomi, to Adam who placed his arm on my shoulder, to the guards who were approaching me now.
My heart beat spiked up. The confinement room? What was that? Was it like a prison? What about Naomi? Would she be with me?
“Calm down Maya. The confinement room is not the dungeon. It is just..” Adam was looking for the appropriate word to use so as not to frighten me.
“It’s like a holding cell.” Naomi completed. “There is a good bed, and good food is served twice a day. There is even a complete bath set with a toilet. Don’t worry. You will be out before you know it.” She said, before hugging me to herself, lightly pushing Adam out of the way.
My mother walked up to me then. Her arms were wide open for a hug.
Immediately, I disengaged from the hug with Naomi, strolled to her, and hugged her, inhaling her beautiful scent.
“I didn’t do it, mum. I am innocent.”
“I know, my dear. I trust you. I didn’t raise a thief.” She agreed, disengaging from me when the guards cleared their throats.
I turned to Adam after I was freeed from my mother’s hug; expecting his too.
“I will be there soon. I need to talk with my father.” He said, before dropping a kiss on my lips amidst the stares and murmurs, before walking toward the direction his parents had taken to leave the hall. The king had left immediately he pronounced judgment on me.
The guards jerked me roughly by the shoulder, about to drag me to the cell, but a voice stopped them short.
“Don’t hold her that way. I think she can walk by herself. Right Maya?”
Noah.
This had to be recorded in the book of records. First time Noah Brekan was standing up for me.
The guards nodded, then bowed, before gesturing with their hands that I started walking in the direction of the confinement room.
I mouthed a thank you to Noah, who nodded, before strolling out of the hall toward the western exit.
On that path, I saw my father, foster father now I know of the truth, with my two siblings. They just stood there staring, although I could see the smirk on Lilian’s lips.
She must be happy about this newest development. Just like Claire, I was sure that she was envious that Adam liked me. After all, she had always had a crush on Adam since forever. She even had his pictures all over the wall of her room. She was that obsessed.
Too bad I hadn’t gotten the chance to gloat over her. Or would I?
