“No, she couldn’t have done it. I was with her the whole time, so when did she leave to steal the necklace? It’s not even possible that she knew where the necklace was; she hasn’t been here before. Therefore, how would she know the safe room?” Adam spoke coldly, causing my heart to soar, and my fears to abate maximally.
“Are you not seeing it?” He continued. “It is completely impossible that Maya did this. I don’t know how the necklace had gotten into her bag, but she didn’t do it. Perhaps someone else did.”
A tear slipped from my right eye. A tear of appreciation. Appreciation for being loved and being stood up for.
Adam’s brothers looked at me then. The anger that had swam in their eyes shifted to an apology; they believed him. But his father shook his head, his glaring cold eyes never leaving me, creating a sense of darkness within me.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he was in on this set up. Because that was what it was. A set up. Someone had set me up. But who? Who would want me in the dungeons? Who would want me dead?
Claire perhaps. My mind supplied. And instantly my eyes searched out for Claire. Where was she?
When I had almost given up hope on finding her, I saw her just right beside me, after a Naomi who was still bewildered at the turn of events.
The slut was smirking at me. Her eyes. They provoked something. The information was trying to push past the barriers of my mind, but it wasn’t successful; no matter how much I tried to rack it out.
I bit my lips, knowing that I was forgetting something. I had seen something important. But what?
I began to tap my right foot on the floor steadily as if to a rhythm; a habit I fell into whenever I was onto something, or was trying to remember something.
The girl.
My foot stopped tapping on the floor.
That was it! The girl!
The girl that had lied to Naomi and I. The girl that had promised me a secret about Claire. The girl that had laughed at me, that had scorned me outside, seeking to distract me.
The time interval when I had gone out with her should be when it had happened, should be when the necklace had been deposited into my bag. That was the only moment I was absent from the party. But hadn’t Naomi been with my bag?
My eyes reverted to Naomi. She was staring at me. She mouthed something to me then, but I couldn’t get what she was saying-because my mind returned to Claire’s eyes again.
Her eyes. There was something about the eyes.
The Girl!
Claire’s eyes, were exactly the same as the little girl’s! That was why seeing her had brought back the memory of the girl to me.
But how was that possible? Claire and her brother were the only children of their parents. There was no younger sibling.
Claire’s eyes were unique too. Light blue with rings of violet surrounding them-it was the special feature that made the male folk flock around her. It also added to her mysteriousness. And no one else in the pack had that unique eye type, not even her brother.
But the little girl had the same eyes as Claire. How? Was there a sibling I knew nothing of?
I noticed Naomi furrowing her eyebrows and sighed. She must have guessed that my mind wasn’t on her.
She turned aside then, her eyes twitching when she saw that Claire was right beside her. She huffed, and walked toward me Immediately as if Claire had a plague, not minding that people were staring at us now.
“What do you think is going on? I know you didn’t do it. Heck, you haven’t been in the palace before! How can you be when the three boys were your nemesis? But who would do this? Who would set you up?” She asked without a preamble, immediately she got to me.
“I don’t know, Naomi. I am not sure. Claire seems suspicious.” A whisper tinged with caution..
Noami’s eyes widened as she assimilated this piece of information and turned to face Claire.
Claire must have deciphered our discussion by the look on Naomi’s face because the next minute, she raised her middle finger against us, and stalked toward the lycan king majestically.
Every step she took toward the menacing man caused a loud thump in my chest. What was she going to tell him?
“What is she doing now?” Naomi asked.
I could hear the trepidation in her voice.
I watched as Adam and his brothers turned to look at her, as she came and stood in front of their father.
“Claire, my dear. Do you have something to say?” The lycan king asked her, and she nodded, sniffling at the same time, her earlier demeanor instantly changing.
Oh my god. I balked, staring at the quick shift that hadn’t even taken a second to happen. She was looking pitiful now.
“C’mon Claire, speak to me. Do you know something about what happened?”
Her father, the best friend and beta of the king, stepped beside her, his mate right behind him. The both were looking at their daughter like she was the most precious thing on earth.
“Yes father. I saw who had taken the necklace. But I’m not sure if I should divulge it. Some people would not be pleased with the truth.” She answered, her eyes resting on Adam who stared at her blankly.
Was this girl trying to do what I believed she wanted to do? She was more twisted than I thought.
“Oh, she is going to get it from me if she goes ahead with this tirade.” Naomi said, fisting her hands together, glaring at Claire, who continued to look at Adam like he would rip her apart if she spoke one more word.
