Chapter 57
Ava could feel her heart pound in her chest, what was he up to? What was he about to ask her? She had no idea, but she had a hunch, one she chose not to believe, there was no way he would have found out.
Only Alpha Jude and Mika knew about it for now, and Alpha Jude’s ego was too big for him to want to disclose something of that nature to him.
His gaze was not the usual soft and lovely one he always had for her, it was a rather fierce and angry one. A look even she was not familiar with, one that reminded her a lot of the alpha Damon from high school days.
Her hands trembled slightly, and she fidgeted with them on her thigh. His gaze on her was hard, she could feel it without even looking up at him.
“Okay,” she finally mustered up enough courage to answer him.
“Are you pregnant?” He did not stutter, did not hesitate, did not ask like he just had a hunch, he asked like he knew what the answer to that was, like he just wanted her to confirm something he was aware of.
She was stunned beyond a doubt, as to how he found out, who could have told him? How did he find out? Were her sweaters not baggy enough to hide it? Did Alpha Jude tell him?
Her mind reeled with possibilities of how he must have found out. A blend of emotions rushed through her, quite too overwhelming, she had to hold back from crying.
Her lips moved as she tried to tell him the truth, she wanted to tell him how she had found out, why she had decided to keep it away from him, why she had concluded that he was not fit to be the father of her child.
But her lips could not utter any of those truths, she could not bring herself to say them. To her, he had no idea how it was hard even for her to keep it a secret this long.
“Ava?” She heard his voice call to her distantly.
“Ava!” He called again, slowly dragging her out of her thoughts.
She turned to look at him, mute as a statue. She had nothing to say to him, she could not deny it, but at the same time, she could not admit it. Because then he would inquire who the father of her child was, and she was unable to let that truth slip, at least not yet.
His hand reached for hers on the desk, and she flinched away from his touch, this was not the alpha Damon she had come to love and know, not the same alpha Damon she had made this precious child with over the last few months.
This was a ferociously angry man, whose anger she was confused about. Was he angry that she was with the child? Was he angry because he knew it was his, and she had kept it from him all these while?
“Ava? Are you pregnant?” He asked again, his voice came out mean and stern, making her cringe on the inside. She could tell he knew what the answer to that question was, he just needed her to confirm and affirm it, why? She had no idea.
Her gaze met his, and she lowered it immediately, she could not stand the hate that his eyes held. There was not an ounce of softness in them, not even a little, and all she saw when she looked at them was the hate he now had for her.
The hate that brought back memories of high school. This was not the alpha Damon that made sweet love to her in every corner of this office. Not the alpha Damon who wanted to have her every chance he got.
This was Damon from high school, the one who made life a living hell for her. And while Ava hated to admit to it, she knew this part of him would always exist. This hateful, vengeful, bullying part of him will always be there, somewhere.
It gave her even more reason to not say a word, she would not tell him that this child was his. She could not risk him finding out, he could not be the father to her child.
Ava wondered why she had ever thought he would change or had changed. He was still the same Damon from high school, only he had not been triggered and now that he was, she was beginning to see it.
She could hear the anger boiling in his veins, he was mad at her silence, and Ava did not care. She had gone past the stage of being scared or threatened by him, and no amount of pressure he applied would make her budge.
“How far along are you?” He asked, Ava held back a smirk at the rage that rolled off his tongue with the words.
‘A little over four months’ she thought to herself, hugging her abdomen softly. His face was red with rage when she looked up at him. Holding his gaze a little longer.
He was holding back from saying something, and Ava wondered what it was. Was there more? What did he want to say that he was holding back from?
“Why Ava?” His voice broke when he muttered the question, making Ava more confused than ever. He had just given her the most hateful of looks, spoken to her in the meanest ways, and now his voice was breaking? None of it made sense to her.
“Ava, you need to speak to me.” He was losing his shit, nice Ava thought as he bellowed the words at her.
He stared at her hard and long, Ava could see something in his eyes, but it had disappeared just as fast as it had appeared. She was not ready for the next words that left his lips.
“Should have known you were still a whore and a gold digger.” Alpha Damon said hatefully and Ava swallowed hard. There was no way he just called her that.
She looked up at him to make sure she had heard well, she wanted to ask him to repeat himself, but the only word that left her mouth was “What?”
“Yes, that is what you are Ava, a white and a gold digger.” He repeated boldly. Ava blinked so many times, that it was difficult to comprehend what was happening.
Was he the one speaking? Was there someone else in the room that she was not aware of?
“I should have known the minute you threw yourself at me when you gave you the chance, is that what you do? Fuck around and get pregnant?” He was being mean, and he was doing it deliberately, and it hurt.
“Is this your first one yet? Or have you had others that I have no idea of?”
Ava could feel the rage rise in her chest, she heaved to calm herself, but she could not, he was running his mouth and calling her names she did not deserve. Accusing her of things that she did not do like he was any better.
“No!” Ava said and stood up to tower over his seating figure. “You do not get to calm me names, no,” she said firmly.
“Like you are any better?” She saw him flinch at that and got even more pumped.
“You are a bully, Damon, a narcissist who feeds his ego off other people’s pain. A sadist and a manipulator.”
“There is a long list of adjectives I could use to describe how horrible a person you wear and still are from all indications.”
His lips moved to speak, but Ava stopped him, raising a finger and giving him a stern look. “No, you do not get to speak anymore, you had your time.”
“It is why I did not tell you about the pregnancy, I could not trust you because I knew deep down, deep into your core, no matter how you tried to deny it, there is still that Damon from high school.”
“The hateful bully who took out all his frustration and pain on innocent, undeserving people. Relieving yourself of trauma by causing others suffering.”
“Did you think that after all those years of fighting for my life while serving you dutifully, and doing all you asked of me while still getting treated like trash, I will still accept you as my mate?”
His eyes widened when the words left her lips, Ava did not know if she meant her words or if it was her anger speaking, but she just let the words flow.
Watching him get angrier with every word, happy that he could feel even a bit of what she felt when he called her a whore and a gold digger.
Something he had no right to say, not when he had treated her like shit in the past, only to sit there and shade her like he was a saint.
