The delivery room was in chaos. The obstetrician who had come to assist was from a nearby hospital, not a particularly renowned one.
She had seen hemorrhages before, but dealing with one in such a poorly equipped place outside of a hospital was truly difficult.
She was already in her forties and didn’t want to ruin her reputation.
So she urged the young nurse, “Have you called the ambulance? Stop the bleeding, quickly find a way to stop the bleeding.”
The young nurse was almost in tears, “If you can’t think of a way, how could I possibly come up with one?”
At that moment, a young woman suddenly rushed in from outside. She was wearing sterile surgical clothes and gloves, looking like she had already been disinfected, and she walked quickly towards them.
The doctor looked at Sylvia, who was wearing a blue medical mask, in shock and with dissatisfaction in her voice, “Who are you? This is a delivery room, why are you here?”
“I’m a general practitioner specializing in hematology. My name is Sylvia Andrews,” Sylvia replied briefly and then began to check on Mariam’s condition. “She’s hemorrhaging badly; we might lose both the mother and the child. The situation is very critical. The mother can’t exert any strength now; we need to perform surgery to get the baby out immediately.”
“But… how can we perform surgery with such heavy bleeding?” The obstetrician was even more shocked and couldn’t close her mouth. “You’re a hematologist, that doesn’t mean you can handle obstetrics! Dr. Sylvia, don’t act recklessly; this is a matter of life and death!”
The young nurse was even more anxious. She had just finished her internship six months ago and had only been working for a short time.
None of the more experienced nurses wanted to come on this call, so they pushed it onto her.
She had never experienced such a big situation before, and her eyes turned red like blood as tears streamed down her face. “If something really happens, am I going to be labeled a murderer? Is my career going to end here?”
“Shut up! Stop arguing!” Sylvia’s ears hurt from their bickering. “Listen to my instructions now.”
For some reason, the two of them instinctively closed their mouths and began to follow Sylvia’s orders.
At this moment, the ambulance was speeding towards them from afar.
After about ten minutes, the loud cry of a baby came from the delivery room.
Everyone waiting outside couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief.
Queena said excitedly, “Thank God, thank God, the baby is finally born.”
Finnegan nervously stared at the door of the room. “I wonder how Mariam is doing…”
While they were discussing, the door of the delivery room opened, and the young nurse came out holding a small baby wrapped in a blanket. “It’s a girl. I’m taking her for a bath now; where’s the warm water you prepared earlier?”
“Please follow me, it’s over here.” The butler quickly walked over to lead the nurse to clean the baby.
Hearing that it was indeed a girl, Finnegan’s mother’s face turned sour. “Having a daughter is a loss; what’s the use?”
“Mom, no matter what, she’s still my daughter. Can you stop saying such unpleasant things in front of me? Mariam is still in there fighting for her life, and you’re worried about the baby’s gender. Aren’t you a woman yourself?” Finnegan growled at his mother irritably.
Finnegan’s mother Alina pursed her lips and said nothing more.
She had always preferred boys over girls. Before having Finnegan, she had aborted two girls and only kept Finnegan when she finally got pregnant with him.
The young nurse soon returned with the cleaned baby and handed her to Finnegan.
Queena also came over to look at the baby. “This child has beautiful features and double eyelids; she’ll surely be pretty in the future.”
“Which child of the Hipps Family isn’t good-looking?” Mollie teased the baby. “She’s really beautiful.”
Finnegan felt very emotional, with mixed feelings in his heart.
The feeling of becoming a father was indescribable.
Only Alina didn’t even glance at the baby and slowly asked the nurse, “How is my daughter-in-law?”
“She’s still being resuscitated! She fainted,” the young nurse said before heading back to the delivery room.
As soon as she went in, several burly men stormed into the small courtyard and headed aggressively towards the living room.
“Finnegan! Come out here!”
The man leading them had a sharp face and was holding a stick. As soon as he saw Finnegan, he swung the stick at him.
Finnegan protected the baby in his arms while dodging but still got hit several times.
He grimaced in pain. “Coward, what are you doing!”
“I’m hitting you for bullying my sister! Where is she?” Coward cursed as he hit him several more times.
Finally, Clare couldn’t stand it anymore and grabbed his stick, throwing it to the ground. Coward reluctantly glared at everyone in the Hipps Family.
“If you dare harm my sister, I’ll kill your whole family! None of you will survive!”
Queena’s face darkened as she looked at Mariam’s brother Coward acting like a thug. She slammed her cane on the floor angrily. “Do you think this is your village or your cellar?”
She was usually gentle, but now she was really angered by Mariam’s family. “My granddaughter is still trying to save your sister! And you come here and hit my grandson? What has our Hipps Family done to your Conley family for you to act like such thugs?”
Coward came prepared today, intending to extort money if something went wrong. He planned to blackmail the Hipps Family for a large sum if necessary.
Clare looked coldly at Coward. “Finnegan has treated your sister well, giving her everything she wants. And you still bring people here to cause trouble? That’s too much.”
Coward laughed lewdly. “Treating my sister well? Then give me a million dollars, and I’ll leave right now.”
“Oh my daughter!” Suddenly, a loud wailing came from the courtyard entrance as a middle-aged woman in a floral cotton-padded jacket rushed in. She sat on the ground crying loudly. “You heartless Hipps Family! You’ve harmed my daughter!”
“My poor daughter! So young, how could she be gone!”
“You killed my daughter; I must seek justice for her!”
Lizbeth cried with snot and tears as if her daughter was already dead.
Queena trembled with anger at seeing this family of ruffians causing such a scene at the Hipps Family home. Her chest hurt from rage.
“I told you, Mariam is being resuscitated! My granddaughter is trying to save her! Can you stop causing trouble?”
“Who cares about your granddaughter? You say resuscitation; maybe you’re harming her!” Lizbeth was unreasonable, glaring with eyes like an ox’s. “I don’t care; your Hipps Family is rich and powerful but bullies people. You must give us an explanation.”
“Exactly! My mom is right; we won’t settle this without five million dollars.” Coward immediately agreed. As soon as he spoke, the relatives he brought started cursing as well.
“Why treat our daughter like this?”
“Just because we’re poor doesn’t mean we deserve this!”
“Compensate us.”
“Five million dollars!”
“No one leaves without paying!”
Clare had never dealt with such unreasonable people in his life.
No matter how much he explained or talked, they wouldn’t listen.
They just wanted money.
They really thought the Hipps Family was an ATM.
Finnegan held the baby in his arms, gently soothing her as she cried loudly after just being born.
But none of Mariam’s family came over to see what the baby looked like or if she was healthy.
Finnegan felt waves of sadness in his heart.
This was Mariam’s family; these were his in-laws.
How could he have been so blind to marry into such a family?
“Butler, throw them out!” Clare couldn’t take it anymore and ordered the butler to get some servants to throw these people out.
The butler was also fed up. “Go away! Do you think you’re someone important? Coming here to cause trouble at the Hipps Family?”
“Do you really think your daughter is made of gold? Who would dare offend the Hipps Family? If we wanted you dead, we have a hundred ways.”
“Ah! They’re hitting me!” Lizbeth immediately lay on the ground rolling around and shouting. “They’re hitting me!”
“Kill me then! Just kill me so I can accompany my daughter in hell!”
Clare’s worldview was completely shattered; he had never seen such shameless people before.
He was dumbfounded.
He helplessly looked at Queena. “Mom, what do we do now?”
Queena also had a headache. “What else can we do? We can’t out-rogue them, especially since Mariam is still being resuscitated… For Mariam’s sake…”
Before she could finish speaking, another commotion of footsteps approached.
Several reporters carrying cameras suddenly rushed into the small courtyard and headed straight for the living room.
“Is it true that your Hipps Family disregards human life? Not sending the mother-to-be to a hospital but setting up a private delivery room instead? How could you do such a thing with your wealth?”
“What were you thinking? Can you explain? Is it because this daughter-in-law is from a rural area that you don’t value her life?”
“The Hipps Family is so rich but refuses to send the mother-to-be to doctors; it’s shocking.”
“Has she given birth yet? Is it a boy or girl? How is she doing?”
The reporters’ barrage of questions left everyone in the Hipps Family stunned.
How did reporters get in here?
