Pandora’s POV
My mind was in a mess as I could not get over the fact that Ashley had actually hurt Caleb. Even though they had tried to hide their relationship from everyone at first, it had become evident over the last few weeks that Caleb had truly been in love with her.
It was hard to think that someone as nice as Ashley could harbor such in her heart and even execute it.
All attempts to make me feel better weren’t working as I fell ill and couldn’t stop throwing up. The doctor has been to the palace over three times today just to check on me as nothing seems to be helping me feel better.
“Why are you doing this to me?” Rolan asked as I looked up sadly and saw him standing, arms at akimbo at the doorway.
It looked like he had been standing there for some time and I was too lost in thoughts to even notice that he was there.
“I’m fine, babe. Just tired.” I answered and stirred, trying to turn my back to him. He caught on real quick because the next minute I felt the bed dip and my wolf growled in pain.
“You are not fine and this is more than tiredness. I know how much you loved Ashley because of what she has done for you. It was your own way of paying back seeing everything that later transpired around the time we finally found you.” He paused and pulled me close to himself.
“You have to do better than this. We are going to find her and if the information reaching me is correct, I am sure that we will find her soon. You just have to relax and not worry so much.” He kissed my neck, patting my back comfortingly.
“I know. It’s just hard to come to terms with.” I admitted and he smiled.
“There’s good news. I’m sure that you will be pleased to hear it.” He announced and I turned tiredly to look at him, knowing that Rolan was willing to do anything just to see a smile on my face.
“What is it?” I asked him.
“Caleb is fine. Although the bullet had struck him close to the heart, it didn’t hurt any of his important organs. He will make a full recovery but I can’t say when.” He beamed and I leaped out of the bed, shrieking.
This was too much of a big deal for Rolan to lie about it. He was not that kind of person so I struggled with whether to believe him or not, since I had seen Caleb in his own pool of blood myself.
“How is that possible? He was confirmed dead right in front of me and burial arrangements have already been made. Are you just trying to make me feel better because if that is what you are doing, the joke is too expensive to make at such a time.” I said to him, just so he understood that I would be mad if it was not true.
“Caleb is a trained wolf. He has the ability to slow his pulse so it’s undetectable. It’s one of the ways to throw your enemy off and I am sure that is exactly what he did. He has currently been placed on life support in one of our secret facilities and you are the only person that I have told this news to besides Griffin.” He replied calmly and I realized that he was really telling the truth.
I stood off the bed and did a little celebration dance, joyous that nothing had happened to him. It means now that Ashley, if caught, would not be tried for murder but for attempted murder and I was excited for that.
“This is such amazing news. Why didn’t you tell me that earlier?” I asked and sulked a bit.
“It’s because I only confirmed it this evening. Ashley had also been in close contact with her mother. I suspect that there is a lot going on with Ms. Edna that we didn’t think she was capable of. I want you to be security conscious now and always inform me whenever something comes up or if you are going anywhere.”
My mood had improved greatly and I was now happy that Caleb was going to be okay. It had broken my heart the most when I thought that his mate had been the one to betray him. It must be a lot of pain for him to deal with.
“I hope Caleb recovers soon. I also think that we should let him go. He has paid enough for his crimes and he needs to come back out to be able to put his family back together. Ms. Edna is only going to jeopardize things for them and even cause them greater harm than she already has.” I suggested and Rolan looked at me carefully for some time before shaking his head.
“Alright, I will look into that and discuss with the right bodies. You should eat now, look at how skinny you have become.” He teased and lifted up one of my arms as I let it drop to the bed weakly.
“I will eat now. Are you fine?” I asked him, seeing the worry lines appearing at the corners of his eyes.
“Nothing serious. I have just had a lot to deal with, added to having to worry about you these past few days. You really got me worried. ” He replied and I felt guilty.
“I’m sorry about that. I promise that I will do better with handling my emotions from now on.” I promised and he smiled at me, brushing my lips lightly with his fingers.
“It’s okay. It’s my job to worry about you. Now go and eat so you can come back here and thank me appropriately.” He teased me again and I ran out of the room, my cheeks flaring a bright red color.
