It has been another week since I regained consciousness and struggled to settle into my new life until I was able to remember something else.
So far, all that has come to mind, accompanied by a very terrible headache, was the name of a person called Derrick. I remembered nothing else.
Mrs. Edna and Ashley have been the most helpful, catering to me carefully. I took evening walks with Wilson whenever he was around. He had been the most proper gentleman that I remember.
“A penny for your thoughts?” Ashley asked, jolting me out of my thoughts.
“Oh, it’s nothing. I am just trying to figure out what to occupy myself with before I regain my lost memories.” I answered promptly, knowing that if I hesitated, Ashley was going to figure me out.
She had proven to be incredibly smart in the last seven days. Wilson had also warned me to be careful so she would not have me figured out so fast.
I had laughed until she had figured out my thoughts a whole number of times, leaving my jaw on the floor.
“Well, mom is a doctor. You can join her at the pack clinic, or you can work with my brother and me. Loads of cool options available for you if you want to do something else.” She suggested it to me and even though I had lied about what I was thinking about, I began to consider the possibility of a new life here if I did not remember the life I had.
“Oh, those are really wonderful suggestions. I will consider them, and maybe discuss them with Wilson before I make up my mind. See what he thinks about these options?” I said, thinking about how fun it would be to work with Mrs. Edna at the pack clinic.
“About Wilson. How’s it going?” She asked, and I was quite surprised because nothing unusual was going on.
No one in their right senses would think about such a thing given the kind of situation that I have suddenly found myself in, so I wondered what actually gave her the idea.
“How’s what going?” I asked, unsure and not wanting to offend her by jumping to the wrong conclusion about what she might have meant by that question.
“Wilson? You do not notice anything?” She asked me, looking quite surprised herself, almost like she was expecting me to have developed some kind of feelings for her brother, whom I have known for only a week.
“I do not. I would rather not be wrong in my judgment, are you trying to tell me that you are expecting a romantic relationship from me and your brother’s closeness?” I asked, hoping that that was not what she was insinuating because that would be very awkward.
Just as she was about to answer my question, a knock sounded on the door and Mrs. Edna came in, wearing a white laboratory coat and a stethoscope hanging loosely around her neck.
“Hello Preggo.” Mrs. Edna teased me, smiling so warmly at me. She has a way of making me feel safe, and she is the only one that I have really been able to feel completely safe with.
There was something about Mrs. Edna that reminded me of someone that I strongly feel meant a lot to me.
“Hello Mrs. Edna, where are you headed? I thought you did not have to work today?” I asked as she had told me yesterday that she wanted to take the whole of today to rest.
“A call came in, we have a child who seemed to have fallen into a ditch somewhere around the fence, no one has been able to identify the ditch, though. But the child crawled out and that was where he was found by the patrol men.” She explained.
I noticed Ashley’s eyes light up when her mom mentioned the ditch by the fence.
“Mom, did you say the child fell into an unidentifiable ditch close to the boundary fence?” Ashley asked, and her mom raised an eyebrow.
“Yes. Is there a problem?” Mrs. Edna asked Ashley.
“Nothing to worry about. It just resonated with a conversation I had with Wilson not too long ago. Guess I should have taken it a lot more seriously.” Ashley said.
“Oh, well. That’s you and Wilson’s department. I will be going to mine. Preggo, do you want to come with me? Meet some other people from the pack and start getting settled.”
“Oh, I do not mind. I’ll just rush up to change and come right down. It should not take me more than a few minutes to get ready.” I responded and rushed up the stairs.
It was like a confirmation of what I needed, working in a place of healing, so I could get mine. I appreciated the thoughtfulness of Mrs. Edna, she sees what my soul needs and does not hesitate to help.
I rushed down a few minutes later, considering the urgency of the situation. A few minutes after that, I sat beside Mrs. Edna in her sleek small car.
Soon after we got into the car, Mrs. Edna stopped the car abruptly, parking at the side of the road.
“Is everything okay, ma’am?” I asked, unsure of what to do or why she had stopped in the middle of nowhere.
“I was eavesdropping on your conversation with Ashley, preggo. I am sorry about that. So thing is, I have lovely kids, but they are not so lovely when they do not get their way with something. I do not want you all to start off roughly, considering you’ve only been out of a coma for a week.” She said to me, and my tongue almost dropped out of my mouth.
“I do not understand. Ashley and I were just talking about random things” I said, confused as hell.
“Those random things, do not give a straight reply to them or try to have clear-cut conversations with them where you don’t agree.” She said, and I even got more confused.
“What exactly are you saying?”
“Wilson and Ashley both have bipolar disorder.” She said, and my eyes went around in shock.
