In just one night, Fritz Manor had transformed completely in preparation for the engagement. Everyone was involved, from the servants to the hosts. Jane handled the details while Williams oversaw the overall setup. All the materials were purchased that afternoon. Grandma was in charge of being happy, her spirits high and lively, embodying the saying that joy brings vitality.
Watching the busy scene in the yard, Tom Fritz felt a bit conflicted. After all, this was a deception, an act of rebellion he had never committed before. It might not be right, but it was his only way back to the lab at this moment. With global warming and pressing climate issues, someone had to sacrifice for the future of the world.
The backdrop made of fresh flowers incorporated traditional elements. Pure white tablecloths and several groups of red balloons heightened the festive atmosphere. The welcome stand and posters were also rushed to completion overnight.
“Tom, how many relatives will come from Agnes’s side tomorrow?” Jane asked to make arrangements in advance.
Tom quickly replied, “Only her parents. Their family doesn’t live in Arkpool City, and her parents are here on a business trip, so they have time to meet.”
“Then we only need to count our relatives-your aunt and uncle, and your other aunt…”
Tom didn’t respond, hoping nothing would go wrong tomorrow and that he could withdraw smoothly in the afternoon. He was entirely focused on his career and had no intention of falling in love. Although he had some special feelings for Agnes, he didn’t dare to look too closely at them. She was too young, like a rising sun. Besides, he couldn’t stay by her side; his work was dangerous, always prepared for sacrifice.
Compared to a girl’s sensitivity, men are often more rational.
The next day, when the wedding car brought Agnes and her ‘parents,’ she was moved by the scene in the yard. Seeing Tom in his suit not far away always made her lose herself for a moment. Her Mr. Cat stood there in the sunlight, dazzlingly brilliant.
She had been sleepless last night, knowing he would leave. She kept thinking about whether she should confess her feelings today. Should she tell him that she really liked him and even loved him? Should she reveal that she had been sending him emails for seven years and couldn’t help but share her daily life with him?
But when Agnes thought about breaking the fragile bond between them and how they might not even remain friends afterward, leaving only awkwardness between them, she became completely clear-headed. She didn’t dare take that risk.
Being friends meant they could still stay in touch; knowing Mr. Cat was him was already something to be grateful for. She loved him and only wished for his health and safety without burdening him too much.
One shouldn’t be too greedy; otherwise, it might annoy the other person and push them away.
She was truly a bundle of contradictions, always overthinking everything.
Tom walked toward her with a warm smile and gentle demeanor, exuding both gentlemanliness and warmth in every gesture.
In front of family and friends, they completed all the engagement ceremonies. Their fingers intertwined as warmth spread through their palms under the sunny sky. Agnes glanced at him with eyes full of admiration and affection.
He was so wonderful that she fell for him completely. Those beautiful thin lips reminded her of their soft touch and that kiss he hadn’t refused; her rationality began to crumble.
I love you, Mr. Cat… she silently confessed in her heart.
Tears welled up in her eyes as she fought back a sour feeling at her nose; she wanted so badly to tell him how much she loved him! But he was leaving… She could only wish him a safe journey and happiness while burying this love deep within her heart.
