It wasn’t really clear which house on 3rd Street belonged to the Yates, but she had already taken off before asking the question. She now had to use her ability to avoid breaking into the wrong house. She had to rely on her strong sense of smell, having been around Davine for a long time and knowing his scent. All she needed was a faint smell of it, and she would do the rest.
The neighbourhood was filled with lilies, and almost every house had it in their garden, and this was one smell Davine always had on him. George arrived, panting and trying to catch his breath. It seemed he had pushed himself to his limit just to keep up with her. His strength left her impressed.
“I am sorry,” she immediately apologised.
He shook his head and said, “It’s ff…in…e, I needed the extra speed. Where is he?”
She turned from him to the houses on the 3rd street and then shook her head and said, “I can’t tell. It’s harder than I expected.”
She went silent, and when her sense of smell picked up on Davine’s scent, she reverted to her hearing. The street was quiet, and she could hear from a few blocks away and filter down the noises. Soon she picked up a heavily beating heart, and she began walking towards the side where the sound came from.
George followed behind but said no word in order to not interrupt her.
She arrived at the fifth house on the third steed, and there she picked up Davine’s scent, which was much more prominent. She stepped onto the balcony leading into the room, and though she had only heard Davine’s heartbeat, now she could hear voices coming from the inside. He wasn’t alone, and whoever was with him wasn’t his friend, not after what Quincy told her in school.
They were his enemies.
She pushed the door, and it opened for her. She was about to step in, but George grabbed her by the hand, and turning to him, she saw him shaking his head. “Let me.” He muttered to her, and she stepped away and let him take the lead.
He entered, and she followed behind him. A man walked into the living room and saw them there, but before he could react, George reached for him and snapped his neck. Another walked into the living room, hearing the sound of bodies dropping, and Zera attacked him immediately, taking him down.
“Tell us the weakness!” Zera heard a strange, hoarse voice ask from not so far away but got no response.
She wondered what these men wanted and what weaknesses they spoke about. She didn’t want to wander too far in her mind, as a man’s life was in danger.
She heard a loud crash after a sharp smack, and she knew Davine had fallen. “Carry him up!” he ordered those in the same room with him. “Oh, how I’m going to love killing you.” He gloated.
Zera picked up four steady heartbeats, and the fifth, she believed, belonged to Davine because of how fast it raced. There were five men in the room before them, and four of those were the enemy.
George gave a signal to her even as he followed the voice that he had almost heard.
She knew that, just like before, he was taking the lead. She didn’t mind following, as long as they would safely rescue Davine. George has proven himself to be noble and decent in the art of battle, and it was a plus to him that he was trustworthy.
“You better tell us what we want, or after we are done sending you to life beyond, we will send your son as well.” He threatened, and Zera hated that he had spoken about harming a child who did him no harm.
That seems to have gotten to Davine because she picked up a rough struggle. A smack is heard the next second, followed by silence.
He was helpless in this situation, and the men who held him hostage knew it too.
“Speak while you still have the chance!” he snarled at him.
George opened the door to the room, and Zera quickly followed in as well. The men who stood in the room seemed too occupied with Davine to notice their presence. Perhaps they didn’t believe anyone would come in here to help.
“I will not repeat myself.”
George and Zera attacked the men standing, snapping their necks in a second. Their dead bodies hit the floor immediately. Zera didn’t see the third man whose heartbeat she had calculated, but she couldn’t set her heart to it.
“I think you should step back from that man,” Zera said to the man standing before the bruised and battered Davine, who was tied up to a chair.
The man, realising what had just happened, paused and turned around to look at them. His eyes dropped to find his men dead on the floor before George and Zera, and his teeth gritted, probably already knowing them. “Zera!” he snarled.
The door from the corner of the room opened, and the third man walked in but paused as soon as he saw the turn of things. He turned around to run away, but George attacked and incapacitated him in only a few seconds.
Zera stepped towards him, “I am shocked that you know me.” She said it with a tone of surprise. “Why are you attacking this man?”
He gritted his teeth. “I’d rather die than answer to the likes of you!” he answered.
Zera snapped his neck, and he dropped dead on the floor the next second. She then moved to Davine and loosened the ropes around him. She helped him sit down on the floor.
“You’re safe now, Davine,” she assured him.
He still looked terrified, and his entire body trembled from the terror it had gone through.
She couldn’t blame him; he would have seen death if they hadn’t stepped in.
