I exchanged looks with Chris, who was no longer in the spell his handsomeness cast on her before I focused on the man.
“Who told you I’m a witch?” I placed Chrys down so I could focus on him. “I’m a werewolf, married to Lycans. I presume that’s why you are here, right? To either seek my help or asylum.”
“You are right about that, my queen. I came over to seek your help. However, please forgive me for this, but you are mistaken about your species. You indeed have werewolf blood in you, but you are more of a witch. Your witch’s power, though dormant, is stronger than your wolf blood.”
“What? How dare you slander your queen?!” Chris got up from the sofa, her eyes blazing. “Do you think you can say anything because she let you in, you damned peasant!”
“I apologize for my wrong use of words.” He bowed to me once more. He didn’t seem scared of Chris, which wasn’t unusual. I had heard tales of witches and how powerful they were. If the man kneeling in front of me had witches’ blood running in his veins, it could mean he was more powerful than Chris, hence the lack of fear.
I gestured for Chris to calm down as I focused on him, intrigued. “How did you know I’m a half-witch? Is there anything that pointed it out?”
I doubt that, though. I looked more like a werewolf than a witch. Hell, you wouldn’t know I was a witch if I didn’t tell you, aside from when I changed into my wolf.
“I can sense it,” his response came a few seconds later as he peered up. His beautiful silver eyes locked with mine. Once more, it seemed like I was drowning in his stare, overpowered by something –
I cut the connection, breaking off from his stare. “What’s your speciality?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. Having felt strange each time I looked into his eyes, I had a suspicion of what his powers would be.
“The truth,” he responded.
“Huh? What did you say?”
“The truth. I can see the truth. All I need to do is look into your eyes, and I can tell everything about you, as long as you don’t break your gaze away, like you had done just now.”
“Interesting.” I crossed my legs only to uncross it when I felt a sharp pain in my lower abdomen. Most times, I’d forget I was pregnant. It only takes a kick from the baby to set me on the straight path.
“So, why are you here? What do you need my help with?” I went straight to the point. Having learned a little about him, I wanted to know why he came over and what he expected from me.
“As the only surviving vampire hybrid aside from our kings, I have been in hiding for years, narrowing and escaping death. I was unfortunate to be born with my witch’s side dominant, so I can’t mix in with the crowd. All it would take was a change of my mood to get my hair to change colours.”
“Oh.” Nodding, I relaxed on the couch. “I see now. You want to stay here in the palace, where you can be safe?”
He nodded. “This is exactly what I want, my queen. I believe with your power, you can keep me safe from any who might try to harm me. Please take me in. I promise I won’t make you regret it.” He kowtowed to me, bowing with his head to the floor. “Please don’t deny your humble servant this request.”
Chris smirked as she looked my way. She didn’t need to say a word to me to understand why she was silently laughing. This was the first time I had been in this situation. She wanted to know how I could handle it.
“What made you think I will help you? Didn’t you consider that I might have you beheaded just for knowing my secrets?” Once more. I tried to cross my legs, only to realize on time and stop it. Sighing, I sat up straighter, like I should have done from the onset.
“You are a benevolent queen. Surely, you won’t do anything to harm your humble servant,” he responded, with his head still bowed. “I know you won’t turn me back, and you won’t hurt me.”
“That’s a gamble you have going on for you, young man. Let’s say I agree to accept you into my wings and give you shelter, security and a peaceful life like you want. What do I get from it? Surely, you don’t expect me to help you in vain, do you?” I lifted my brows. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting anything from him. I just wanted to know his thoughts and to know if he was worthy enough to be taken into my wings.
Chris nodded at my words, looking proud.
“I can help you.”
“What?” I blinked. “Help me with what?” I wondered aloud, giving the man an appraisal. He was no longer bowing with his head to the floor. He was now kneeling upright.
“With your powers. Your witch powers are still locked, which means you haven’t been training it. I can help you unlock and balance your powers. As a hybrid, who shares the same ancestry with you, it won’t be difficult teaching you. However, the same can’t be said for other hybrids. I can help you. My queen.” He bowed once more.
“Oh, I see. You can help me master my powers?”
“Yes, my queen. To show how sincere I am, it will be a gift to you, a payback for helping me.”
“Wow. That’s a nice bargain; however, I’m not the only one who can guarantee your stay here. I will have to speak to my mates about this. I hope you understand.”
“Perfectly so, my queen.” He got up from the floor and bowed to me. “I will take my leave today. I will return in a week. Please, consider my request.”
“I will.”
“Thank you, my queen.” Bowing again, he walked towards the door while we watched him depart.
