An unexpected twist

FRED
As suddenly as her screams started, they subsided. Blue and I exchanged looks, puzzled, scared, and alarmed. Hearing her scream like someone in agony wasn’t something we would ever wish to experience again. Her sudden silence panicked us as well. It took a few seconds for us to spring into action. I carried her up from the couch, while Blue raced towards the connecting door.
At that moment, taking her to Da Ankora was our best bet. We couldn’t tell what was wrong with her. The writhing of her body and the screams were all new to us. Da Ankora was the only one who could tell us what was going on with our mate.
With the door open, I rushed through it, with Blue hot on my heels. We didn’t bother knocking on his door. We barged in, our gaze frantic and our hearts thumping so loud, it was deafening.
Da Ankora didn’t ask questions. The minute he saw us, he made provisions for us to place her on the bed in his study.
“Her memories are about to be awakened,” he said before we could ask what was wrong with our mate. He knew what we wanted to ask and answered it before we could voice our concerns.
“Her memories?” I turned to look at him, puzzled at how calm he was, and the certainty in his gaze. Almost like he had figured everything out before we arrived.
He nodded.
“Do we need to be alarmed about that?”
“No, you don’t.” He perched on his desk, with his arms folded, his gaze in a thoughtful frown.
Blue and I sat on the bed, watching our mate, who was peacefully asleep. Sporadically, she would scrunch her face up in a grimace, and we would massage her forehead. She looked so damned calm lying on the bed, with her hair pooled around her like a blanket. The soft rays of the sun – We have different times compared to the humans – filtering in from the window behind his desk, cast her in a golden glow. She looked like the human depiction of an angel, with her lashes fanning her cheeks, and her blonde hair being softly blown by the wind.
“How long will she be this way?” I turned to look at Da Ankora, who hadn’t changed his position. He had his gaze fixed on Bella, though the thoughtful frown was nowhere to be found.
“I don’t know.” He got up, sighing as he walked around his desk to his chair. “It might take some time for her to do that. We just have to wait.”
His response wasn’t what we asked for. We needed a positive reply.
“You don’t know?” Blue pulled up from the bed and marched towards him. “You were so certain when you came to our house and spoke of the damned prophecy. Now you don’t know when she will wake and expect us to sit back and do what?”
“Calm down.” Sighing, Da Ankora got up from his chair. “I recognize you are troubled about your mate, and -”
“Of course, I’m freaking concerned about her! She’s pregnant for fuck’s sake!” He yelled, his tone taking a hard edge. He was pissed. I could feel it in my bones. Probably, our emotions were merged, making me feel what he was feeling with mine.
“Calm down.” Da Ankora raised both hands in surrender. “Your mate will be okay, Arkyn.”
“Blue!” He snapped. “My name is fucking Blue.”
“But we all know that’s not your real name.” Da Ankora walked around his desk to stand in his face. “That was a name you chose when you absconded from your throne and escaped to the human world.” He was fearless. Staring into Blue’s eyes without flinching. “That name won’t follow you when you decide to return to your thrones, my kings.”
“Shut the fuck up!” Gritting his teeth, Blue returned to the bed, fuming. His hands ached to punch into something – Da Ankora’s face. Hearing him call him by his given name reminded Blue of the time when we still lived in the kingdom. Back then, rage blinded us after losing our parents, and we were more destructive. The name was a reminder –
“Can you stop thinking about the past?” He scowled, his anger at Da Ankora transferring to me. “I don’t want to hear any more about it, Tyrell.”
“Fred!” This time, it was my turn to snap at him for using my real name. “You don’t -”
Bunny stirred, taking our focus off each other, and to her. I reached for her, just as he did the same.
“She’s still lost in her memories,” Da Ankora stated. “She won’t wake up until she has unlocked her memories.”
“Shut the fuck up!” Blue and I yelled at the same time, our tone wolves almost at the edge.
“Sorry.” Smirking, he returned to his chair while we focused on our mate. Her breathing was normal like she was having a nap, but we knew it wasn’t so. Whatever she was seeing must be something troubling, as she kept on furrowing her brows, but we dared not wake her up. Da Ankora warned us about that. Abruptly cutting her off from whatever lane she was in would be disastrous for her.
“What do we do?” I looked towards Blue, who was rubbing his thumb in the middle of her forehead, trying to ease the tension on her face.
“We wait like Da Ankora suggested we should,” He replied, with a shrug, his focus still on Bella. “I realize sticking around is tiring, but we can’t do anything.”
“True,” Da Ankora maintained, causing us to turn towards him.
Fed up with his interruptions, We got up from the bed as he approached, ready to start another round of arguments, to take our minds off our mates.
A pained sigh caused me to look towards our Bunny, and my heartbeat ceased for a moment as I stood, frozen in confusion, and unable to react to what I was witnessing.
“Blue!” I yelled out when I finally regained my speech, my eyes almost boggling out of their sockets as I stared down in shock. Sweat beaded on my forehead, and my throat went dry. I couldn’t tell if what I was seeing was real, or if I was hallucinating.
“Fucking hell,” Blue muttered behind me, watching the scene unfold in front of us. It was both beautiful and scary. Watching smooth skin turn into fur.
It was the first time we had seen someone shift in front of us for the first time. At first, we didn’t know what to do until she screamed.
