We followed her scent down the hallway. Though it was overridden by the odour of tobacco, urine and blood, we could still perceive her unique smell. It was like a beacon.
The farther we went, the more intense it became until we got to a door. Without waiting, I kicked it down and rushed in with Fred, to an empty room.
We stopped, and looked around, sniffing the air to be certain we didn’t make any mistake with it. The onslaught of her scent made me know we were in the right place. There was no doubt about it, our Bunny was here.
However, it seemed we were late. Our Bunny had been removed.
“That bastard!” Fred growled, punching the wall. I could feel his pain like it was my own. Wait a minute, who was I kidding? We were both experiencing the same thing. Our emotions were in turmoil, wreaking havoc within us, as they sought an outlet.
I looked towards the bed, the place where her scent was coming out stronger, and that was when I saw something.
“There’s a piece of paper on the bed,” I whispered as I went towards it. The white paper on the bed called out to me as I reached for it, squinting when I saw the words on it.
Written on it were just two sentences. “YOUR BUNNY IS WITH ME. RETURN TO LYXANT IF YOU WANT HER ALIVE”
I read the message and re-read it before I passed it to Fred, so he could check if I saw those words.
“What fool took our Bunny?” I wondered aloud as I folded my arms, looking around the empty room. It was neater than the ones we passed, something that calmed my beast for a moment.
“They are in LYXANT?” Fred sneered as he balled the paper and threw it on the floor. He stumped on it, acting as if the paper was the werewolf with our mate, and he was taking his revenge on it.
“That’s what the paper said.”
“Then, Lyxant we will return to.”
I looked towards him, just as he turned, and locked his gaze with mine. We knew what it meant to return to our kingdom, a place we never wanted to go back to.
Back when we lived in LYXANT, after the death of our parents, we were the terror everyone feared, always controlled by our dark urges.
It wasn’t until the elders revolted, and our uncle tried to harm us that we wiped out those who were against us, dissolved the council of elders and made Earth our abode.
However, we didn’t leave LYXANT on its device. We kept guards to watch over them and keep them in line, though those guards weren’t doing their work. If they had, things would have been different.
“I think it’s time to return home,” I said, sighing as I glanced at the ceiling.
“LYXANT isn’t home anymore, not without our family. Bunny is our home,” Fred whispered those last words.
“Yes. She’s our home.”
….
We didn’t need to talk about the trip. At that moment, we knew what had to be done. If the damned werewolf took our Bunny to our world, we had to bring her back, to save her from the darkness we left behind.
We raced through the night, knowing there was no time to waste. The more we delayed, the more trouble our Bunny might be in, which was why we needed to get to her faster.
We got back to the house and raced towards the secret door. Bella once asked what the third door in the kitchen was used for, and we lied about it, claiming it was a door that led out, even though we never left the house through it.
In truth, it was a gateway to our world… One of the many gateways. This one was created when we left our world. And the rest were created by those rogues that called themselves werewolves. Those ants we should have gotten rid of when they revolted against the throne.
We only let them live because of our mother. She believed that not everyone should be killed. Her belief in redemption was why we let those damned rogues serve their terms in jail. A thousand years. It was a fair deal.
The moment we got to the door, we exchanged looks. “It’s time to go, brother,” I whispered, looking at Fred, whose expression looked torn. I could feel his turmoil, the doubt, and fear. He kept sending them towards me in waves.
“What if our beasts get the best of us in there?” He nodded towards the door. “Do you think she will want to see us in that state?”
“What else do you suggest we do? Let them have her? I know we promised each other not to return to that place, but we have to.” I walked over to him and took his hand in mine. “We are in this together. Our darkness can’t get the best of us.”
“But -”
“I’m the one who should be worried, don’t you think?” I teased, trying to lessen the atmosphere. “Mother always said I’m the dark one, and you are the light. My beast is the one we should be worried about.”
He looked towards me, and his face softened. “Are we in this together?”
“Forever,” I assured him. “I doubt we will be there long enough to do anything that will wake the bloodlust. If things work out well, we will get her out of there. But should the blood craze come, we have our Bunny to help calm it down.”
“What if we hurt her?” He looked troubled, his time showing the toll this was taking on him. “What will happen then?”
“We won’t,” I assured him, smiling. Though I was worried as he was, I knew one of us had to step up, to be the shoulder the other would lay his head on. “We are going there to save her, and not to hurt her.”
He sighed. “Then let’s get things going before it’s too late.”
Smiling at him, I mumbled some words to the door, and it opened. The other side was pitch black, like the cloud on a moonless night.
Inhaling sharply, we stepped in at once, and the door closed behind us.
