They said nothing about the interview, and it scared me to ask them about it. I was still sore from last night and didn’t want them to order me to spread my legs once more if I wanted to see them at my office.
I left their house early to get ready for work. They said nothing about the interview and I didn’t remind them of it, opting to leave them to whatever they decide on. They didn’t offer to drive me home like I thought they would, which further solidified my claims about them not showing up at my workplace.
I got dressed for the office earlier since I returned by 6. I didn’t bother with a heel, knowing I might not take over 10 steps in it before my legs gave way. Had I not been eager for work, I wouldn’t have gone out today. I would have spent the rest of the day soaking in my tub and begging the ache to ease.
Making my hair took me close to thirty minutes because of the twin braids I had made at the front. I was tired of tying my hair up in plain ponytails and buns. Which was why I opted for something different, and it turned out well.
I got dressed in a sleeve low lace beaded chiffon maroon gown. It stopped just below my knee and was the perfect fit. Ever since I bought the dress months ago, it was my first time putting it on, and I looked so good. I paired it off with silver sandals, loving my look.
It was a pity my lovers wouldn’t see me in such an outfit. I doubt I would go over today since I was still sore. I would have to decline should they ask me to go over after work.
Grabbing my silver purse, I stuffed it with my phone and snagged my keys from the hook. Looking around my living room, I left my apartment, locking it behind me.
….
Chris wasn’t yet in the office when I arrived. Ben was the only one in the only around since he tended to arrive an hour earlier. He was going through a file, but when he saw me, he turned and hurried out before I could greet him.
Puzzled, I looked towards the door, wondering what was wrong with him. This wasn’t the first time he’d done this, and it made me wonder what his reasons for doing such were. Why run whenever he sees me? Was it because of that night?
Lifting my shoulders in a shrug, I sat on my desk and switched my office desktop on to catch up on the latest gist in the office since I was way behind them.
The workers I shared the same room with came in gradually an hour later. Soon, the entire office was filled with typing and conversing. Like always, none of them tried to strike up conversations with me.
Though they greeted me when they arrived, I could tell I still had enough work to do before I got acknowledged by them.
It was during lunch when I heard screams. They had all gone out to eat while I opted to stay in. I bought some snacks on my way, knowing how lunch period was.
Unless Chris takes me with her, it was always suffocating eating in the same place with the workers. Especially if Imelda decides to grace the cafeteria with her presence.
Speaking of the bitch, I hadn’t seen her since today, which was odd. Though I didn’t put many thoughts into it, I couldn’t help but think about her when I heard the screams.
Instead of going out to check, I sat at my desk, typing away. As an aspiring best journalist in the company, I knew I would have enough mapped out for me should I get the position.
I would have to work harder than I had always done, to beat Imelda and any who might try to take the post from me.
The adage ‘unease lies the head that wears the crown’ couldn’t have been truer. Getting the position of the best journalist is hard, but keeping it is where the work lies. It was the hardest. That was why most of the workers, just like Chris, didn’t want the position.
I glared at the door when the shrieks became too deafening. I wanted to march out there and demand they shut the hell up, but didn’t do that, knowing they wouldn’t listen to them. I wasn’t like Imelda, the best, and neither was I Chris, the most beautiful in the office. I was just plain Bella. The only thing I had achieved since I joined the firm was my current case, one I could only keep by spreading my legs for the brothers.
I doubt I would have gotten to where I was had I not done that. Though it was embarrassing thinking of it, I knew I only had to do that because I had no freaking choice.
Chris burst into the room a few minutes later, her eyes large as she rushed over to me. “Girl!” She screamed, her eyes wide as she looked at me as if I had done something extraordinary.
“What’s wrong?” I rose from my chair, looking at her with a frown. “I thought you weren’t coming over today.”
She called a few hours ago to tell me she had some work to do and wouldn’t be at the office.
“Do you think I will miss something like this? This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, girl! I can’t believe you didn’t tell your best friend about this!” she accused, narrowing her eyes.
“What are you talking about? What didn’t I tell you?” I frowned, trying to understand what she was saying. “Why are you at the office?”
“Stop acting like you don’t know what I’m freaking speaking about. Would you have kept it a secret from me if I didn’t get a call from one of the workers?”
“I don’t get you at all, Chris.” I walked around my table to get to her. “What are you talking about?”
“The Christophos brothers, of course!”
“Blue and Fred?” I frowned. “What happened to them?”
“Girl, are you for real?” She placed both hands on her waist, still glaring at me. “You invited them to the office and couldn’t even inform me!”
Now, I was the one gaping at her. “You don’t mean… Are they here?”
“Wait a damned minute. Don’t say you weren’t informed. Like you didn’t know they were coming?”
I shook my head at that. “They didn’t tell me they were showing up to the office.”
