Before Logan could respond, the air shifted again. The ground trembled slightly, the sound of growling growing louder. A low, menacing growl reverberated from the shadows, and then another wolf appeared, followed by two more. They emerged, eyes gleaming with hunger, their movements slow but deliberate.
“We’re surrounded,” Logan muttered, his expression hardening.
I clenched my fists, feeling the weight of the odds pressing down on me. Three more wolves, and we were already pushing our limits. We’d just defeated one, but that wasn’t going to be enough to keep us safe. Not now.
Logan stepped closer to me, his voice low. “Don’t underestimate them. They’re not here to play.”
I nodded, trying to steady my breath. We couldn’t afford to be cocky now. These wolves weren’t just any strays-they were something else, something more dangerous.
The pack advanced in a synchronized motion, closing in from every side. Logan and I stood back-to-back, preparing for what was coming. My senses sharpened, adrenaline flooding my veins.
“You take the one on the left,” Logan said, his tone commanding. “I’ve got the others.”
I didn’t wait for him to finish, immediately shifting into wolf form again. The rush of power surged through me, my body shifting and aching with the change. My senses exploded to life-everything was louder, sharper, more intense. The world around me was no longer just a battlefield-it was my domain.
The first wolf lunged at me, but I was faster. I sidestepped, slashing its side with my claws, drawing blood. It yelped and stumbled, but it didn’t stop. It recovered quickly, snarling and coming at me again.
“Nice try,” I growled, readying myself for the next attack.
Logan was already in the middle of his own battle, his massive silver form darting in and out, a blur of speed and power. He took on the two wolves, his teeth flashing as he tore into one of them, sending it flying.
But then I heard it-a growl, even lower and darker than the others. From behind me, a massive wolf stepped forward, larger than anything I had faced yet. Its fur was dark as night, eyes burning with fury. This one wasn’t going to be an easy fight.
“Logan!” I barked, my heart racing. “We’ve got company!”
Logan’s silver eyes flashed over to me as he took down another wolf with ruthless efficiency, his massive form moving with deadly precision. He nodded, but I could see the flicker of doubt in his gaze. He could feel it too-the intensity of the new wolf’s presence. It was stronger, faster, and much larger than the rest of them. This wasn’t just another pack member. This was the alpha.
I could feel the weight of the situation pressing down on me. My heartbeat thudded in my ears, and my instincts screamed at me that this was too much. My claws still ached from the earlier fight, my muscles were burning, and my mind raced to find an escape plan. If we stayed and fought, we might win, but the chances were slim. The odds were stacked against us.
I hesitated, just for a moment, weighing my options.
“We can’t take this one,” I growled, not looking away from the massive beast. It was watching us now, its golden eyes glowing with an eerie, predatory gleam. There was no hesitation in its movements, just raw, unrelenting power. I could feel its dominance over the pack, a presence that demanded submission. “We need to get out of here.”
Logan’s gaze flicked to me, his expression unreadable for a moment. Then his lips parted in a snarl, his hackles raised. “You’re right,” he muttered under his breath. “We can’t stay here. We need to regroup.”
I wasn’t sure how much longer we could keep up this fight. The air was thick with the scent of blood, and the pack was growing more restless. I could hear more wolves gathering, their growls and snarls echoing in the shadows. We had already taken down several, but this alpha… This was different.
I stepped back, my body tensed, ready to move. “Logan, I don’t want to end up as one of their snacks. We have to get to higher ground, somewhere they can’t reach us.”
Logan let out a sharp breath, his muscles coiled and ready to spring into action. “On three. We make a run for it. Don’t look back.”
My eyes narrowed as I quickly assessed the situation. The pack was moving in from all sides, closing in. It was now or never.
“One,” Logan’s voice rumbled, low and steady.
I shifted, feeling the power in my wolf form surge again. My muscles were still burning, but the adrenaline coursing through me made me feel almost unstoppable.
“Two,” he said, his silver eyes locked on mine. The next second, we both burst into motion, moving as one.
The first wolf lunged toward me, but I dodged it effortlessly, my body moving faster than I had ever thought possible. Logan was already ahead of me, tearing through the pack with wild, ruthless speed. We didn’t have time to slow down, and we didn’t have time to fight. We had to make it out.
I heard the alpha’s growl-low and menacing-behind us, but I didn’t look back. The pack was in full pursuit now, their growls and heavy footsteps pounding against the earth. My heart hammered in my chest as I pushed my legs harder, moving toward the trees where we could lose them in the thick underbrush.
“Keep going, Audrey!” Logan barked, his voice sharp as he glanced over his shoulder. His eyes locked with mine again, a silent promise that we would make it out alive.
We raced through the forest, leaping over rocks and branches, the sounds of pursuit growing louder. The alpha was faster than I expected, closing the distance between us quickly. I could hear it, feel it, as if it were a shadow at our heels.
I gritted my teeth, refusing to slow down. There had to be a way out. There had to be a place we could hide.
