Vera’s POV.
“Damn that.” David cusses at the sound of my ringtone. He presses me against the wall, wanting to drive my attention away from it but I needed to take the call.
“I need to answer the call,” I mutter into the air between us.
“That can come later…” He tries to order me but I take charge immediately.
I mean this is my life now. I have every right to make the decision and not him.
At that, I perch my hands over his drenched chest, pushing him away.
“No, I need to take the call.” While speaking I gaze up at him.
David’s jaw clenches and I see a muscle tick but I don’t care at all. I insist on my right and pull him back more.
“If you will excuse me…” And then I drag my feet away from the shower cubicle, padding my way into the room.
Water droplets wriggle down my body but I don’t pay mind to it and reach for the phone blaring on my nightstand.
I grab the phone when I see my assistant’s number hovering over the screen.
“Corbin?” I sputter into the phone when I picked up the call.
Corbin is the assistant the modeling agency assigned to me and since we’ve been working together, Corbin has been good. Always watching out for me and giving me information about things happening in the company.
Corbin is gay and that singles him out from the rest of the guys in the company craving my attention.
Funny enough, Corbin always advises me to use the guys to my advantage, especially the company manager so that I can climb up the top easily but you know that’s going to be impossible.
I still have my eyes for one man regardless.
“Omigod Vera. Big fish is in town!” His slightly feminine voice blasts into my ears as he excitedly exclaims.
My curiosity piqued, and I flutter my ears and press the phone tightly against my ear to hear him well.
“What did you say?” I ask, now heading into the balcony.
The white towel I have around dangling as I walk into the balcony. The streetlight brightening my features. The horns of cars mix with that of Corbin as he rattles.
“Don’t fucking tell me you didn’t hear the rumors about the big fish?” He asks and I hum.
“I didn’t. You know you do way better than me in that field.” I remind him and that galvanizes a short laugh from him.
“C’mon, Corbin tell me.” I plead, my feet hammering against the floor.
“You should be paying me for this information I feed you with, you know…”
“That’s not a problem. I’ll settle you when I land a big gig, Corbi-baby…” I tease him with my nickname for him and he lightly laughs before coming around.
“Well, if you say so. I’ll hold you to your word…” He reminds me gently before he speaks again. “Chris Bruce landed all the way from France today. And as a result, Deen fixed an impromptu banquet to welcome him…”
I’m already squealing excitedly before he finishes. God, I can’t believe it. Deen has been the model I admire. He is so perfect and good at what he does.
God, how would I have known had Corbin not informed me now?
“You’re such a sweet doll, Corbin. Hell, I wouldn’t have known if you didn’t call to break the news…”
“I know right? I have always told you to blend in with the higher-ups…information like this will always reach you on time…”
“I guess I’ll consider your advice.” I jokingly say.
We both laugh before Corbin asks. “So? You showing up for it?”
“Definitely. I’ll be there soon. Just drop the location.”
The instant we end the call, Corbin sends me the location for the banquet. Excitement reels inside me and I whirl around to get inside and prepare only for me to bump into the plains of his chest.
“Oh…” I gasp, rubbing my palm over my forehead as I look up to meet with David.
He still looks annoyed his jaw is clenched so tight I worry he might break his teeth.
“You should not block ways like that…” I sputter, sidestepping him as I walk into the room.
I totally shifted my mind from the fact that we were making out not long ago in the shower. I head to my wardrobe in search of something classy I’ll wear to the party.
“Where are you going to?” David’s guttural voice reaches me.
“I’ve something to attend to.” I gush, still mindlessly searching for clothes. “Ahh, I think this is going to be better…” I say under my breath.
“By this time?” David’s voice comes again.
That surprises me, given the fact that he just returned here a few minutes ago. I pull away from my wardrobe to hold his gaze. My brows cocked.
“Vera is already two in the middle of the night…”
“And? It doesn’t stop me from going out at all.” I state firmly.
“It’s risky.” He insists.
I scoff and focus back on my wardrobe, searching until I find a plushy red gown. I pull it from the hanger and pad back to the bed.
I quickly lose the towel around me and start dressing up.
“Risky? Coming from a man that just arrived here not long ago?” I scoff again. Then. “David don’t be pathetic.”
In three long strides, he stands before me and looks down. His gaze intense. Something similar to jealousy ripping through his gaze.
David is…jealous? Or is my thinking?
“Vera. I’m a man. And I can protect myself.”
I sneer at his words immediately. “So it’s about gender capabilities now, huh?”
While I ask that, I focus on dressing up, not caring what he has to say.
David babbles on and on but I don’t give a shit.
The instant I zip my dress up and gather my hair in a ponytail, I turn to face him.
“David, I’d like you to know that I can very much protect myself. I don’t need you to protect me or interfere. This is my job and my life…so please, give me some space.”
My words seem to shut him up. He only watches me with more shock hovering over his face.
At that, I veer on my heel and walk away, calling my second driver to pick me up.
David didn’t follow me. The look of shock on his face makes me smile. I want him to know he can’t make decisions for me.
Not anymore.
As my driver pulls out from the garage, I slip into the back seat and make myself comfortable as we head over to the party.
To be continued…
