Since the moment Nicholas came over to my workplace to pick me up, I’ve been getting a really weird feeling that something bad was about to happen but when he told me about what happen at the Carthwright Group, I tried to brush it off.
He seemed really exhausted as he had been driving for hours from New York down here just to break the good news to me so I didn’t want to ruin the happy moment by disclosing my fears to him.
We were minutes away from home when we saw a car coming at us with full speed. Before Nicholas could swerve completely out of the way, our cars collided, causing an accident.
When I reopened my eyes, I noticed that I was still in the car. I groaned rubbed my head as a migraine hit me fiercely. After it had calmed down, I wanted to stand up and that was when I realised that the car had been turned upside-down.
“Nicholas.” I called and turned to face him only to see that he was unconscious with blood dripping out of a deep cut on his head. I patted him as a way to wake him up but he didn’t budge.
I was about to hit him harder to wake him up when a familiar smell hit my nostril; it was fuel from the car!! Slowly, I felt the car heating up. It will soon blow!!
Panic hit me immediately and I struggled with my seatbelt. After I was able to get out of it, I crawled out through the passenger seat’s window which had broken during the crash.
I crawled over to Nicholas’ side of the car and unlocked his seatbelt through the shattered window. As I was pulling him out, the shards of glass from the broken window cut my arms but I didn’t mind the pain.
All that was on my mind at the moment was to save Nicholas. After enough pulls, I was able to bring him out of the car. I placed one of his arms around my shoulder and pulled his heavy body with me; then I walked a safe distance away from the car crash.
When I saw I was far away from the scene of the accident, I placed his body safely on the ground as I was getting weaker every passing second that his weight was on me.
I was about to go back for the driver that had crashed into our car when both cars suddenly exploded. I fell and watched in horror as the cars burnt down with the driver still inside.
Within few seconds, my eyes started to get blurry and my body gave up trying to stay awake.
When I opened my eyes again, I noticed that we weren’t at the side of the road anymore. I looked around only to see that I was at the hospital. I was about to sit up when I felt something warm and heavy pulling me down.
I looked over only to see Nicholas’ head resting next to me and his hands wrapped tightly around mine. A tear dropped from my eye as I watched him sleep peaceful.
He was alive!! I was thankful that I was able to pull him out on time. If anything had happened to him, I wouldn’t be able to forgive myself because he saved me.
He risked his life for me during the accident when he attempted to swerve out of the way. Because of that one action, his side of the car took most of the hit and that was why he was knocked out completely.
I raised my hand and touched the bandage on his head, covering the cut he had. It seemed like he noticed my movement because he suddenly woke up. His eyes were filled with both happiness and shock when they landed on me.
“You’re awake!!” He muttered with a wide smile dancing on his lips and I smiled back. He stood up and rushed out of the ward like he was being chased by someone, making me confused.
A few seconds later, he returned with a man wearing a white coat with a stethoscope placed around his neck, oh, the doctor. The doctor ran series of tests on me and asked me few questions mostly about things that happened before and during the accident.
After he was done, he assured a worried looking Nicholas that I was fine and that he would be back to administer some drugs to me before giving Nicholas and I the room. Nicholas engulfed me in a tight hug immediately after the doctor left.
“I’m so happy you’re awake.” He muttered against my ear and I heard a low sob. I pulled out of the hug and stared at him in surprise.
“What’s wrong? Why are you crying?” I asked when when I saw the tears roll down his cheek.
“I thought you were never going to wake up. Do you know how scared I was, seeing you laying unconscious on this bed for days. If something had happened to you because of me, I wouldn’t have been able to forgive myself.” He muttered as more tears rolled down his cheek.
“Nothing happened. I’m awake now so don’t blame yourself for an accident you never knew would happen.” I consoled as I wiped the tears away from his cheeks.
“No, I knew that Richard would never stay still after taking over the company. I should have known he would go crazy and try to kill us one way or another. I should have have been able to prevent the accident.” He muttered with his head bowed, as more tears rolled down his face.
“Nicholas!! Look at me!!” I ordered as I lifted his head so he could face me.
“Am I not talking and breathing fine? Is there anything wrong with my legs or my hands?” I asked and he shook his head slowly.
“The accident might have been an unfortunate event but it served as a new beginning for us. From now on, we can be rest assured that we will spend the rest of our lives living in peace.”
“We night have little issues such as lovers quarrels…” Nicholas chuckled softly when I said that and that made me laugh too.
“.. but, we can be rest assured that something like this would never happen again because all of our enemies are finally gone.” I assured him.
He smiled softly and lifted my hand before placing a soft kiss on my knuckles. “I love you so much Catherine.” He professed.
“And I love you more Nicholas.” I said back with a a small smile. He chuckled softly and leaned closer to me, engaging me in a warm and passionate kiss.
That day, after hearing that I had finally woken up, my ward was filled up with a lot of people that wanted to see me; including dad, Rachel, Rafael and Tessa, Nicholas’ sister.
I was so glad that I had people that genuinely cared about me now unlike my past life when I was alone most of the time and finally died in the arms of Nicholas.
That was when I realised that the saying was true; good things do happen to good people and the wicked eventually get their karma.
?A month later
I stood outside of the church with my dad standing beside me. Even though he tried hard not to show it, I could still see the tears of happiness pooling in his eyes.
His only daughter was finally getting married and his wish of walking her down the aisle was coming to pass. It was hard for him to not cry. I picked a small handkerchief from my purse and used it to wipe the tears that managed to escape from his eyes.
That small action was enough to break him and the tears fell freely from his eyes. Seeing him so emotional was enough to bring tears to my eyes too. I moved closer to him and engulfed him in a tight hug.
“Thank you so much dad, for always being there for me.” I muttered as I tried so hard not to cry so as to not ruin my makeup.
“And thank you for being the best daughter I could ever ask for.” He muttered as he hugged me tighter.
After our little father and daughter moment, the doors to the church were opened and I walked hand in hand with my father down the aisle to meet my darling husband.
I noticed how his eyes brightened up when he saw me walk towards him, cladded in my white weeding dress. When we got to where he was, dad placed my hand in his and muttered a few words that I couldn’t hear to Nicholas before he walked off.
All through the ceremony, I couldn’t take my eyes off of Nicholas. Even though this was the second time I was doing this, it’s still the best decision I’ve ever made.
I remembered the first time we met and couldn’t help but smile at all the bickering that happened between us. I’m so glad I didn’t loose someone as precious as him again in this life.
He made me realise that just because I failed once, I shouldn’t be afraid in trying out again the second time. We said our vows and exhanged wedding rings before the ceremony was closed with a deep kiss shared between two of us and the loud cheers from the guests we invited.
This is just the beginning of a long and beautiful life together and the end of all of our hardships. This is our happy ending.
