Betrayed

After Andrew, I thought I wouldn’t face something this heartbreaking again in my life but life always has a way of surprising everyone. I never thought it would come from him. He had betrayed my trust.
I stared at the scene in front of me, still unable to believe what was happening. Nicholas wasn’t one to easily betray someone. Not after the length he went through to have me in the first place.
I needed to be sure before jumping into conclusions and doubting his love for me so I brought out my phone from my bag with trembling hands. I dailed his number and stared at him patiently to see if he would answer.
However, he did what I never expected him to do. When he stared at his phone and saw who was calling, he immediately hung up. It felt like a large bucket of water had been poured on my face at that moment the realization hit me the he had indeed betrayed me.
I felt like my heart had been plunged into an abyss of despair. Devastated, I turned around and walked away from the place that had broken my fragile heart.
I boarded a taxi to an hotel and checked in when I got there. I plopped down on the bed and stared at nothing in particular. Nothing made sense anymore. Why do I always end up getting betrayed by people I love the most?
Even though Amara and Andrew’s betrayals hurt me, it was expected but not Nicholas. He had always been there for me and I try to be there for him too. What changed?
Why did he decide to throw everything away? He wasn’t scheming an agenda to steal my birthright the way Amara and Andrew did so why? Was he tired of me? Doesn’t he want the love and life we shared anymore.
I picked up my phone and stared at the picture we had taken together. He looked so happy in the picture so what changed? I guess I wasn’t enough for him so I have to let him go.
Just then, I got a call from him. I stared silently at my phone as I waited till the call ended before placing it down. I recalled how he had ended my call earlier and that made me mad. If I had known, I would have done the same to him too.
He should know how painful it is.

Seeing Catherine in so much pain, Fiona couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of pity. She understands what her boss went through in her last marriage so betrayal was like a big issue to her.
Even with that, she still couldn’t believe that Nicholas would do that to her. He loved her to much to even think of being with someone that wasn’t her. She sighed a little and walked towards where Catherine sat and sat beside her on the bed.
She placed her hand on Catherine’s shoulder and oatted her softly as a way to console her; then, voiced out her opinion;
“It might be a misunderstanding. You should find out what really happened before giving up easily and jumping into conclusions.” She suggested.
“I really do hope it was actually a misunderstanding but you see, I don’t know if I can deal with all this. I can’t handle the intense pain because my trust had been ruthlessly trampled on by the one person I thought would never betray me.” Catherine explained as she held her heart like she was in deep physical pain.
At that moment, no amount of physical pain was up to the emotional one she was facing. She decided she couldn’t deal with it anymore. She silently picked up her phone and booked a flight back home.
She wanted to escape from the pain she was facing at the moment so being home with her sick father and having a lot to do at the company would be enough distraction for her.
Fiona sighed, not knowing what to say to convince her from leaving before finding out the real truth. She stood up and was about leaving for her room when she suddenly got an idea.
“Don’t you think it’s a shame for you to leave so soon?” Fiona asked as she sat down back next to Catherine. Catherine raised her head up and stared at her for a while.
“What do you expect me to do here? I have no close person around to talk to.” Catherine answered.
“I know you don’t know anyone here but you have his credit card, don’t you?” She asked, referring the credit card Nicholas had left for Catherine before traveling.
He wanted her to use it for whatever she wanted to buy since she was his wife. However, Catherine had never had any occasion which needed the card so she had never used it once.
“And why would I want to spend his money?” She asked.
“He cheated on you, didn’t he? Why don’t you just go on a shopping spree, as a way to vent out your pain and anger.” Fiona suggested.
Catherine stared at her silently ad she thought about what Fiona had just said.

As I thought about what Fiona said, I figured she was right. I have never spent any of Nicholas’ money except for the expensive gifts he gives me. This might be the last chance that I would get to spend his money so I had better use it wisely.
I decided to listen to her and I left with my handbag, filled with my phone and his credit card. We rented a car first because I knew that what I would purchase would be too heavy for a taxi to carry.
We wandered through various high-end stores, picking out the most beautiful clothes, shoes, bags and jewelries. I made sure to buy the most expensive ones.
I doubt Nicholas would notice the amount of money I was spending lavishly as it was just pennies to him. Looking at the exquisite items I had purchased, I momentarily forgot about my heartache.
When I returned to the hotel and saw the shopping bags and new purchases piled on the bed and around the large room, a small smile finally appeared on my face. It’s been a really long time since I last did something like this.
“Do you feel better now?” Fiona asked and I nodded happily.
“I knew you would like this. It’s getting late so I better go to my room. Don’t forget to call me if you need something or if anything happens.” She reminded amd I nodded, still not taking my eyes off the luxurious items sprawled all over my room.
Although these spoils couldn’t fully heal my emotional wounds, they at
least brought me a bit of warmth and satisfaction that night. Just then, the hotel doorbell rang.
The voice outside said it was room service with food for me. I was puzzled since I hadn’t ordered room service, but I was indeed feeling hungry. Maybe Fiona did.
With that thought, I proceeded to open the door, and to my surprise, it was Nicholas standing there.
