Zara’s POV
Levi shuddered and turned green; he appeared on the verge of becoming sick.
“I am mated to his son, Kyle,” Levi declared as he stood up and paced my room. “He is my second chance mate.”
“Alpha Wesley has a son?” I gasped in surprise. I cannot recall ever hearing of or meeting Kyle.
Did he attend the mating ritual?
“Yes, he does! How could you possibly believe that I was mated with that old fart?” Levi asked, his voice tinged with disappointment and rage.
“Because you have been acting suspiciously, and I was unaware of Kyle’s existence until now,” I answered. “When did the White Moon Pack accept a new Alpha? No announcement was made to the packs.”
“Technically, they haven’t accepted Kyle as the new Alpha yet,” Levi answered.
“Oh? How come?”
Levi sighed and shot me an annoyed glance.
“Kyle has spent the past few years living and studying medicine overseas,” Levi said, a dreamy smile forming on the corner of his lips. He seemed proud and in love with his mate. “His father made him come back home.”
“That’s interesting,” I replied. “Why the sudden…?”
Levi sat back on the bed and rolled his eyes. He was aware that until I was satisfied, I would ask countless questions.
“His father decided that it was time for his son to return home and fulfill his duties to the pack as Alpha. The old fart wishes to leave the Alpha role,” Levi clarified. “The crowning ceremony is scheduled for later this month.”
“I am happy for you,” I said. “Kyle had better take good care of you, or else…”
Levi laughed.
“I told him that if he hurt me, you would go ape shit on his ass,” he said.
“So?” I asked, my curiosity getting the better of me. “How did the two of you meet?”
Since we spent most of our time together, I was unable to determine when and where Levi had managed to meet his new mate.
“It is actually a funny story,” Levi said, biting his lip in response, and his cheeks flushed slightly.
“I am very interested in hearing this funny story,” I replied.
“Curious about hearing it,” Levi corrected me.
“Fine,” I confessed. “I am dying to find out. End my suffering and tell me already.”
Levi ran his fingers through his blond hair while grinning.
“Remember the afternoon we dropped you off at the hotel?” Levi asked, searching my gaze.
“The Golden Gate Hotel?” I asked, shifting my head to the side.
I will never forget that day. Nic and I had our first argument that night, and I ended up at the Nightingale Pack.
Levi gave a nod.
“Well,” he said, his face flushed even more. His eyes brightened as he searched for the right words, and he turned to face the window. “Ronan needed to go to the airport to pick up Kyle.”
“Airport? I thought you two were attending a meeting,” I asked.
“No,” Levi said, shaking his head, “we were meeting Kyle.”
My eyebrows were knitted together. I was certain that I had been informed that they were attending a meeting.
“Perhaps you misinterpreted,” Kaya admitted. “The thought of seeing Nicolas distracted you.”
“It was love at first sight,” Levi let out dreamily.
“Did you…?” My thoughts trailed off.
Levi nodded.
“We both called out ‘Mate’ at the same time we laid eyes on one another,” he admitted.
I sighed. That sounded so romantic-no one had ever called out mate to me before-and I felt a little envious.
I should not feel envious of Levi. He is my best friend! I quickly shook off the unwanted thoughts and feelings and paid attention.
“What happened then?” I asked, and Levi’s lips curled into a playful smile.
“Kyle released a growl,” he said, seriously. “All of a sudden, he appeared enraged, as though he wanted to tear the airport and everyone inside apart.”
“Why what happened?” My eyes went wide as I gasped.
“I was not sure why he was acting that way at first,” Levi clarified. “I thought I had done something wrong. His wolf had grabbed control, and he was charging toward me. I was certain that he would reject me-even before we exchanged any words. My heart was torn apart.”
“Oh, Levi.” He had to have assumed the worst. I could only imagine how painful those few seconds must have been for him.
“But that’s when I noticed Ronan standing far too near me and…”
“And Kyle believed that Ronan and you were lovers?” I cut in.
Levi nodded and laughed.
“Oh, no! Really?” My hands shot to my lips.
“Yeah!” He laughed. “Ronan quickly moved away from me, raising his hands in the air, and clarified that we were not romantically involved-just acquaintances. After that, Kyle relaxed and introduced himself. Ronan was a little shaken up. He was not prepared for Kyle to act like that.”
“He definitely has a knack for making an impression,” I remarked.
“Yeah,” Levi replied. “Even Ronan will never forget our first meeting.”
I couldn’t help but laugh. I could only speculate as to how the entire experience must have appeared to outsiders.
“So, how is Ronan acquainted with Kyle?” I asked as I got out of bed. I had to get ready for training.
“Ronan’s sister and Kyle have been best friends for a very long time. They all attended the same school or something,” Levi explained. “Even after he left and traveled overseas, they stayed friends. Thus, he called Ronan and requested that he pick him up at the airport.”
“Oh, that was considerate of him!”
I picked out my workout attire from my closet, grabbed my towel, and went to the bathroom. I left the door slightly open to be able to hear Levi talk.
“It was,” Levi said.
“Ronan sure is a good friend to go fetch him from the airport,” I said. “I wonder why his pack did not send a driver to go get him.”
I suspected Nic was hiding the fact that Ronan was picking Kyle up at the airport for a reason.
Did the two Alphas have animosity toward one another?
“Because the subject never came up,” Kaya interrupted my thoughts. “Does the fact that Nic knows Kyle matter? Will it affect your relationship in any way?”
“No, not really,” I answered. “I simply do not want my secret to leak; I can’t handle more complications.”
“I doubt that Kyle will say anything,” Kaya replied, certain about her facts. “He will not jeopardize his own mate.”
“I guess so,” I said as I turned on the shower.
“Kyle’s flight was delayed,” Levi called from the door of the restroom. “And he was not ready to return home. He stayed at Ronan’s place.”
“And you were okay with that?” I shouted back as I stepped into the shower.
“Of course!” he said, pausing a bit.
“Liar!” I exclaimed, laughing.
“I am not!” Levi growled.
“You are lying. You were jealous and uneasy about Kyle sleeping over at Ronan,” I pointed out to him.
“I was not, okay?” Levi argued.
“It is okay if you were,” I replied. “That’s normal. If my mate had slept over at someone as attractive as Ronan, I would have felt the same way.”
Levi shoved open the door, and I shrieked and snatched up my towel to cover myself.
“Now you are acting like an ass!” he snarled.
“What? Little old me? What did I do?” I asked, feigning innocence.
“You just made me feel insecure,” he said, looking at me while putting his arms across his chest.
“Oh, Goddess. Levi, no,” I said. “I did not mean to do that at all. All I did was tease you a little.”
Levi looked directly into my eyes. The atmosphere in the shower became cold as tension began to rise.
What was he planning to do?
