Three seconds later, the door was closed again.
Callie was startled, worried that their position had been misunderstood! She quickly pushed the man off her, stood up, and said, “Go back to the master bedroom to sleep.”
Then she opened the door and fled in a panic.
Nelson watched Callie’s retreating figure with a wry smile and murmured, “Girl.”
When he came out, Ben pulled him aside. “What’s going on? You’re still sick; you need to restrain yourself.”
Nelson couldn’t help but laugh. “Are you okay?” He patted Ben’s shoulder. “When you barged in just now, she was embarrassed. Don’t mention it again.”
Ben rolled his eyes. “I didn’t expect you to be so happy now.”
Grandpa really went to find Reuben. The two hit it off immediately. Callie was surprised. Since Nelson was recovering and couldn’t handle business, they both went to Reuben’s place.
Callie volunteered to be his driver.
Nelson sat in the passenger seat, smiling helplessly. “I doubt your skills.”
“I’m an excellent driver, you know,” Callie said confidently.
“Really? Who was it that had an accident last time and called me for help?” he said slowly.
Callie’s face turned red, and she angrily tried to cover his mouth.
Nelson laughed as he watched her fuss.
Halfway through the drive, he signaled her to stop by a supermarket.
“For what?”
“Groceries.”
Callie was puzzled.
“Last time, I didn’t get to taste your cooking. This time, everyone’s here, so I’ll cook.”
Hearing this, Callie was flattered. “Oh, who could refuse that?”
Nelson squeezed her hand and scolded with a smile, “Don’t be sarcastic.”
When they arrived, they happened to see a familiar figure coming down the stairs. They brushed past each other, and Callie didn’t pay attention until she suddenly heard a voice behind her: “… Sis.”
Callie’s back stiffened, and Nelson turned around as well.
It was Joaquin. Unlike the last time they met when he was emaciated, he looked much better now and was staring at Callie with a complicated expression.
“How did you know about this place?” Callie asked coldly.
Joaquin lowered his head. “My mom told me…” Then quickly added, “But don’t worry, I don’t mean to disturb you. It’s just that he’s my father too…”
Callie looked at her half-brother, feeling unsure about her emotions as she saw him trying to turn over a new leaf.
“Since you’re here, come up.”
Nelson was carrying a lot of groceries. Joaquin immediately wanted to help and cautiously called out, “Nelson…”
They had met at Club Paradise before.
Nelson didn’t respond. “Come in.”
Grandpa was indeed there, sitting on the balcony with Reuben, enjoying tea and a leisurely life.
Reuben’s expression changed when he saw Joaquin behind Callie. Leaning on his cane, he said, “Come with me.”
“Dad…”
“Come in!”
Grandpa called Nelson over. “Why are you here?”
Nelson chuckled. “What? You can come here but I can’t?”
Grandpa scoffed but then said, “That’s right. This is how a son-in-law should behave.”
Nelson asked about his health and then said, “As your son-in-law, I’m going to cook now. You should stay and try it.”
Grandpa looked at Callie in disbelief. “Did you teach him?”
Callie blushed and pushed Nelson towards the kitchen. “Grandpa, I’ll help him.”
The man who believed in staying away from the kitchen seemed quite adept at these tasks. Callie guided him from the side, and their backs looked warm and sweet together.
The essence of everyday life is probably just like this.
