Nicholas POV
“Honey, can you hear me?” I said, seeing Monica’s half-closed eyes. Fear gripped me when she suddenly closed her eyes completely.
I carried her in my arms instantly and rushed to the car “Monica hey keep your eyes open” I said but she didn’t respond. My heart raced in fear as I looked at her “Don’t you dare die on me” I said, my voice trembling as Anthony helped us into the car.
Anthony quickly closed the car door behind us and entered the front seat then started the engine.
“Monica please open your eyes,” I said, my voice trembling yet low. “Anthony drive faster” I yelled, panic slowly engulfing me.
Anthony increased the pressure on the accelerator while I focused on Anthony. I couldn’t even keep my eyes away from Monica.
“Get out now” Anthony ordered and I looked through the window to discover we were already in the hospital.
Instantly, I came out and carried Monica out gently, walking hurriedly to the entrance of the hospital. Some nurses saw us and they instantly rushed to us, taking a gurney along with them.
I placed Monica in the gurney and they rolled her into the the hospital with speed. Monica wasn’t moving or even blinking her eyes and that made me panic a lot.
“Sir please we will take it from here,” the nurse said then stopped me and Anthony from taking any further steps as the other nurses rode the gurney into one of the corners of the hospital
I paced about, my hands on my waist as the memories of Monica’s still body replayed in my head. She wasn’t moving, she wasn’t opening her eyes and she wasn’t even talking.
She didn’t perform any sort of movement to indicate she was still alive and I was very scared of it.
“Where’s Monica? Where’s my baby?” Mrs Clara asked, running to where we sat as tears gathered in her eyes.
“The doctors are attending to get now Mom” I replied, moving to her and engulfing her in a comforting embrace as I saw tears spilling from her eyes “She will be all right Mom”
“My poor girl has gone through a lot this year Nicholas. It hasn’t been easy for her at all. This isn’t the first time she’s coming to the hospital” Mrs Clara said, sobbing in my sleeves as she gripped tightly to my arm ” This is all my fault. If only I didn’t leave her when she was younger, then maybe she wouldn’t have even known someone called Ethan in the first place”
“Mum it’s isn’t your fault. Stop blaming yourself Mom” I said, trying to comfort her with words but my words only seemed to increase her sobs.
“Nicholas” Anthony called and I turned my head to fix my gaze on him “Ethan is dead” he announced and I didn’t even know how to react
Should I be happy he was finally gone? Should I be sad that he was dead? At least he is gone from our lives forever.
I didn’t know what to say to this piece of news so I just nodded my head and removed my gaze from Anthony whose gaze was solely on his phone.
“Ethan? You mean Ethan Knight?” Mrs. Clara asked, staring at me with red teary eyes “Monica’s ex-husband?” She added, asking again
“Yes, Mom. He died with a bullet in his stomach. The doctors said he is BOD” Anthony said
“BOD? What’s BOD?” Mrs Clara asked, her gaze now fixed on Anthony.
“Brought in dead” Anthony explained further.
“How did he die? What killed him?” Mrs Clara asked, curiosity evident on her face and I sighed in relief as another discussion with Anthony was taking her mind away from Monica.
“According to Mia, Ethan tried to get the gun from her and as they were struggling with the gun in their hands, she mistakenly fired a shot which landed in his abdomen,” Anthony said and I frowned.
That psychopath Mia was still alive. She was the one who was supposed to die and not Ethan. Though Ethan was a pest Mia was even worse. I would have preferred Mia killed than Ethan.
“What are the police saying about Mia? How the hell is she still alive?” I asked furiously because I saw her gripping her legs in pain which proved that she was shot.
“Mia is been treated in a different hospital. She was shot twice by Monica in both legs and the police are keeping their eye on her. After the hospital, she is going to jail and that is for certain” Anthony said and I sighed.
The last few months haven’t been an easy one for me and Monica. From one trouble to another. From one situation to another. It was heartbreaking, exhausting, and hurtful sometimes.
My greatest fear right now was Monica not waking up or not making it. I will kill Mia with my bare hands if Monica doesn’t ever wake up.
I ran my head through my hair with my gaze on the door, waiting for a nurse or doctor to come out and give us news. I was anxious and I hoped silently in my heart that Monica was all right
“Mr Sterling” I heard my name and I hurriedly ran to where the doctor was, saving her the stress of walking down the hallway to where we sat.
“How is she a doctor? Is she fine? Is she moving now? Is she awake? Can I see her?” I asked, rushing each question and more fear engulfed me.
I can’t imagine losing Monica and I didn’t even want to imagine it. Apart from the kids, Monica was the only woman who could make me smile with just her smile. She was the light of my life and I don’t know what will happen if that light ever loses its life.
“Calm down Mr Sterling” Doctor Helen said, a smile across her lips “Mrs Sterling is fine as stable”
“Oh thank you, doctor. Thank you” Mrs Clara yelled, her tone filled with relief and happiness.
“Can we see her?” I asked in excitement
“No, you can’t. She has to rest. We’ve been able to treat the wounds on her cheeks and her forehead. The wound was very deep and she was lucky that the person who hit her didn’t hit her hard enough. She is fine now but needs at least, four hours of rest”
“Least?” Anthony asked, shocked by what Doctor Helen said.
“Yes, Mr Anthony. She needs a lot of rest so please give her space and time to rest. She was unconscious when you brought her here because she had already started losing lots of blood from the injury in her head so please let her rest” The doctor advised.
“Okay,” I said and finally sat in one of the visitor’s chairs. It didn’t matter if I couldn’t see her now, I would wait till her body had had enough rest.
It was a relief that she was alive and that was all I wanted.
