Callie smiled but didn’t say anything, clearly not agreeing.
Since it was on his way, Isaac drove her home. Regan sat in the front seat, unusually quiet.
Callie had a feeling that Regan was a bit scared of Isaac.
“Callie, thanks for looking after Regan lately. She used to be a pampered lady with no work experience. It’s been a hassle for you,” Isaac said, glancing at the rearview mirror.
Callie wanted to say that Regan was actually doing quite well, but she held back. “It’s no trouble at all.”
“Your job has its unique demands, and socializing is inevitable. I hope you don’t let Regan handle those. She’s married, and it would affect my family badly if people saw her,” Isaac said slowly, his prejudice evident.
Callie glanced at Regan, who looked very pale.
“Of course, Isaac. Don’t worry, I’ll make sure your wife gets home safe and sound,” Callie said with a half-joking smile. “Regan’s lucky to have such a loving husband. Unlike me, my husband doesn’t even notice if I’m not home at midnight.”
Isaac lowered his eyes, a sarcastic smile on his lips. “You know, if I don’t watch over Regan closely, trouble might arise, and people will laugh.”
Regan quickly interjected, “What are you talking about?”
Isaac shot her a glance and then fell silent.
Callie didn’t want to keep up the fake smile. Fortunately, they soon arrived at the Paucaster Villa Complex. Nelson’s car was parked at the entrance, the door open as he stepped out and exchanged a few words with his secretary.
The headlights were bright, and Nelson squinted. “Isaac?”
“Nelson.” Isaac turned off the engine.
Callie got out of the car and waved to Regan. “Thanks for the ride home. See you tomorrow.”
Nelson put an arm around her shoulders and nodded to Isaac. “Drive safe.”
Once they were inside the Paucaster Villa Complex, Callie finally relaxed. Walking alongside Nelson, she said, “I don’t know why, but I feel like Isaac isn’t as gentle as he seems. And Regan seems really afraid of him.”
Nelson seemed not to hear her. “Why are you home so late?”
“The studio opens tomorrow,” Callie said, putting her hands on her hips in mock anger. “You don’t seem to care about me at all. Not only do you not know about the opening, but you also didn’t come to pick me up from work.”
Nelson smiled. “Why don’t you check your phone?”
Suspiciously, Callie took out her phone and saw several messages from him asking when she’d be done with work. She hadn’t replied to any of them.
“I was too busy…”
“Miss Marsh, how about a hot bath?” Nelson took off her coat and handed it to a servant.
“That sounds perfect!”
The studio was located on the 28th floor of the office building next to Oconnor Group. Regan had rented the entire floor for a year. The grand opening was the next day, with many well-known and lesser-known partners sending flower baskets and gifts. Litzy was so busy registering everything.
Callie brought Reuben along to witness this important moment.
Nelson didn’t attend, but his secretary Anthony did. Dressed in a suit and tie, he approached Callie with a serious expression. “Mrs. Oconnor, Mr. Oconnor asked me to congratulate you on the opening.”
Callie felt a bit embarrassed under Reuben’s gaze. “Thank you. Where is he?”
“Mr. Oconnor has a meeting today and asked me to deliver this gift,” Anthony said as he handed over a document to Callie. She opened it and saw it was the construction design plan for the Northside commercial area. She raised an eyebrow, feeling overwhelmed by the gesture.
