Cara’s povs
My heart skipped a beat as Debby’s words sank in.
‘Cupbearer.’
The same word the woman in my dreams had whispered to me. My body froze, an icy chill running down my spine. How could Debby possibly know? My hands trembled, and the weight of everything felt like it was pressing down on me. The dreams, the chains, the power inside me, it wasn’t just in my head. It was ‘real’, no matter how much I tried to ignore it.
“What…” What did you just say?” I stammered, pulling back slightly to look into her eyes, searching for answers.
Debby’s expression softened with a mix of sadness, her voice low and gentle. “i think You’re a Cupbearer, Cara. No mistake about that, a powerful one.”
“No…” I shook my head, disbelief washing over me, mumbling to myself. “This can’t be happening. It’s the same thing she said… the woman in my dreams. How could you possibly know? How is this even real?”
Debby’s eyes widened at my words, but she didn’t seem surprised. Instead, she nodded slowly, as if everything was falling into place for her, too.
“I’ve suspected it for a long time, Cara,” she said quietly. “The signs were there. The dreams, the miraculous healing of the sickin the infirmary, the strange feelings, the strength you’ve shown, and the most importantly the change in colour of your hair. It all points to what you are, what you’ve always been.”
I swallowed hard, trying to make sense of her words. My mind raced. ‘Cupbearer’. What did that even mean?, and what colour change?, i have aways have a dark hair all my life. I had never heard of it change to white before, and I never even knew it was part of me. How could I be something so… unknown? So powerful?
“What is a Cupbearer, Debby?” My voice wavered, fear and curiosity gnawing at me. “Why have I never heard of them? What does it mean to be one?”
Debby sighed deeply, her shoulders sagging under the weight of whatever secret she was about to reveal. She motioned for me to sit, and I did, my legs feeling weak. She sat beside me, her eyes distant. For a long moment, she remained silent, staring at the floor as if gathering her thoughts. Finally, she spoke.
“Cupbearers were a rare and ancient bloodline, Cara,” she began, her voice low. “They were born with powers that no other werewolf possessed, abilities that were passed down through generations. Some called them the ‘keepers of the blood,’ protectors of balance in our world.”
I blinked, my heart pounding harder as I listened. The air around us seemed to grow heavier with every word she spoke.
“They had the power to control and manipulate energy, some have healing powers, and the rare of them, destructive powers. Their abilities were feared and respected”.
“They were revered,” Debby continued. “They didn’t rule like Alphas, but they held immense power. Some said they were the chosen ones of the Moon Goddess herself. Their role was sacred, bringing peace, healing, and protection. And because of their abilities, they were feared by some. Respected by others.”
I swallowed hard, my throat dry. “If they were so powerful… why haven’t I heard of them? Why don’t they exist anymore?”
Debby’s eyes darkened, and she lowered her voice as if the walls themselves could betray us. “That’s where the mystery lies, Cara. No one truly knows what happened to the Cupbearers. They simply… vanished. One night, their entire tribe disappeared without a trace. Some people said thay the where hunted down.
“Hunted?” I whispered, my mind reeling. “By who?”
She looked up at me, her eyes dark with something close to fear. “By rogues… and others who feared their power. The Cupbearers were seen as a threat to those who wanted control. They were envied for their gifts, and many believed that if you could harness a Cupbearer’s power, you could rule the werewolf world.”
My stomach churned at the thought. “So… what happened to them?”
Debby’s shoulders slumped as she continued. “No one knows for sure. One night, many, many years ago, the entire bloodline vanished. Gone without a trace. Some say they were attacked by rogues in the dead of night. Others believe they went into hiding, too fearful of being hunted to live openly. There are even legends that claim they were wiped out by rival packs who wanted to take their power for themselves. But the truth is, no one really knows.”
I felt my heart sink. The weight of her words settled over me like a heavy blanket. “They just disappeared?” I asked, my voice small, disbelief clouding my thoughts. “All of them?”
Debby nodded solemnly. “Yes, Cara. Every single one. That’s why it’s so shocking to find out that you… you’re one of them. A Cupbearer. You’re the last of a powerful bloodline.”
The words hit me like a tidal wave, threatening to drown me. ‘The last of a powerful bloodline’. The truth felt too large, too overwhelming for me to process. How could I be part of something so important, so dangerous? I was just an Omega, an outcast. How could I possibly be tied to this ancient bloodline? It didn’t make sense.
“But… I don’t understand,” I said, my voice breaking. “If I’m a Cupbearer, why didn’t I know? Why did no one tell me?”
strange mix of sorrow and admiration. “The Cupbearers were also known for their ability to hide their true selves when needed. To blend in, to go unnoticed. That’s how they survived for so long by keeping their powers hidden. even their hair colour cant expose them as it only turns white when they are using their powers, unless in rare conditions when their gifts were needed the most. And I think… that time has come for you, Cara.”
Debby reached out, placing a gentle hand on my arm. “or Perhaps your family was in hiding, or maybe they wanted to protect you from the fate that befell the others. It’s possible you were kept in the dark for your own safety. But now… your powers are awakening.”
I swallowed hard, trying to suppress the fear rising in my chest. The room felt stifling, and my head spun with the weight of everything I had just learned. The dreams, the power surging through me, the chains I had broken, they were all pieces of a puzzle that was finally starting to make sense. But with that understanding came an unsettling realization.
Her words hung in the air like a death sentence, and a shiver ran down my spine. I had always felt like an outsider, like I didn’t belong. But now, the truth was far worse than I had imagined. I wasn’t just an Omega. I wasn’t just Brian’s slave, I was something more, something that others would want to destroy.
I shook my head, feeling overwhelmed. “But why me? Why now? I’m just, just a girl who’s been rejected by her mate and treated like a slave. How can I be this… this ‘Cupbearer’?”
Her words felt like they were pulling something deep inside me to the surface, something I wasn’t ready to face, but there was something else that i have ignored since Debby’s story, but i guess i can’t continue to turn a blind eye to it. “But… if the Cupbearers are gone… how do you know all this?”
“I mean, if you know them too well, maybe you know about my parents, or what at least happened to them I,” said with hope written all over my face.
looking at Debby, who has an unreadable look on her face.
