Amelia pov
I had been waiting for Harper to traverse my corridor, and the day had been undeniably hectic. It appeared that Lucas’s gaze was fixated on her, a fact that troubled me greatly. My fiance, whose attention seemed perpetually drawn to Harper’s attire, had previously dismissed her advances.
However, it was evident that he was now attempting to capture her attention while I remained in his vicinity. This behavior perplexed me immensely. I stood at my door, peering through the peephole. Numerous individuals passed by, yet I did not spot her. Just as I was about to withdraw, I heard someone call her name.
“Hey Harper. Could you please bring me the landline from the girls’ quarters? Someone has requested it,” a voice with a feminist tone inquired. I promptly opened the door and quickened my pace, only to find her ambling slowly. Our eyes met, and she quickly averted her gaze. “Greetings, ma’am Amelia.”
“Enough of that. Come inside immediately,” I commanded, fixing my gaze on her while gripping the door frame tightly.
“Ma?”
I seized her arm and pulled her inside, as she foolishly attempted to feign innocence. I needed to deliver a stern warning before I discovered that my own partner was entangled with a mere pack worker like her.
Harper’s eyes widened as my grip on her arm tightened. “What is happening, ma’am?” she inquired, striving to maintain her poise.
“Spare me the act, Harper,” I retorted, drawing her further into the room. “I am fully aware of the situation.”
Her eyes flitted around the room, her face reddening. “I-I have no idea what you mean.”
“Do not feign ignorance,” I cautioned, loosening my hold on her arm. “I have observed the way Lucas gazes at you. Earlier today, I witnessed him attempting to capture your attention once more.”
Harper’s eyes fell to the ground. “It’s nothing, ma’am. He is merely being cordial.”
“Cordial?” I repeated, arching an eyebrow. “Do you believe I am oblivious? I am well aware of what genuine friendship entails, and that is not it.”
Harper shifted uneasily, her gaze still averted. “Ma’am, please try to understand-”
“No, you need to understand,” I interjected, my tone steady yet assertive. “You are simply a colleague, nothing beyond that. I will not allow you to endanger my relationship.”
The atmosphere grew tense, silence enveloping the room. Harper’s eyes gradually met mine, revealing a blend of apprehension and defiance.
“I understand, ma’am,” she finally replied, her voice scarcely audible.
I scrutinized her face, looking for any hint of deceit. However, all I discerned was a reluctant acquiescence.
“Very well,” I stated, stepping back. “Now, leave. And maintain your distance from Lucas.”
Harper nodded quickly and turned to exit. As she reached the door, she hesitated.
“Ma’am?”
“What is it?” I responded tersely.
“May I ask you something?” Harper’s voice quivered.
“What do you wish to know?” I sighed.
“Are you content with him?” Harper’s gaze was fixed on mine.
My expression stiffened, caught off guard by her inquiry.
“That is not your concern,” I responded in a frosty manner.
I observed her nodding before she exited the room, leaving me to ponder whether I had just embarrassed myself.
That girl always irritates me; fortunate to have a partner yet unable to remain with one, flitting about like a promiscuous individual, I muttered under my breath as I turned to look at the slightly ajar door.
“Damn it!” I growled, moving too close to the door when someone gently nudged it open. My heart raced as I stood there in confusion. It was Lucas.
“My love, I miss you,” he said, his voice trembling, as he moved closer to me. I was taken aback by his sudden entrance, akin to a mouse fleeing from a predator. “What on earth, why did you…” Before I could finish my sentence, he grasped my waist and drew me nearer, his lips crashing against mine. His tongue explored my mouth, and I found it impossible to suppress the emotions that surged within me. Goosebumps erupted across my skin.
“What is happening, my love?” I inquired, gently pushing him away.
“Nothing, I just miss you.”
“I miss you too,” I replied, my voice barely audible, still attempting to comprehend the overwhelming fervor of his kiss.
Lucas’s gaze was fixed on mine, his eyes ablaze with longing. “I couldn’t focus today,” he confessed, his breath warm against my skin. “You were all I could think about.”
My heart raced at his admission, yet a persistent voice in my mind reminded me of Harper and the way Lucas had gazed at her.
“Lucas, hold on,” I said, gently pushing him away.
“What is the matter?” he asked, concern etched across his features.
“I saw you today,” I began, my tone steady. “You were looking at Harper again.”
For a brief moment, Lucas’s expression wavered before he regained his composure.
“Amelia, she is merely a colleague,” he said in a soothing tone. “You know my love for you is unwavering.”
“Then why do you keep glancing at her?” I pressed, my emotions boiling beneath the surface.
Lucas let out a deep sigh, massaging his temples. “I can’t explain it, alright? Perhaps it’s just a sense of guilt.”
“Guilt?” I repeated, incredulous.
“Yes, I turned her down when she expressed interest in me,” Lucas clarified. “I feel remorseful about that.”
My gaze sharpened. “You never mentioned this before.”
“Because it was insignificant,” Lucas maintained. “I didn’t want to cause you any distress.”
I scrutinized his face, looking for any hint of dishonesty.
“Lucas, assure me that there is nothing between you two,” I stated, my tone resolute.
Lucas’s eyes met mine, his expression steady.
“I assure you, Amelia,” he replied, his voice resolute. “You are the only one I cherish.”
I yearned to trust him, yet Harper’s question echoed in my thoughts: “Are you truly happy with him?”
“Lucas, please hold me,” I murmured, seeking comfort.
Lucas enveloped me in his arms, drawing me near.
As we stood together, an unsettling feeling lingered in the air.
If he attempts to deceive me, I will not hesitate to retaliate the next time he tries to kiss me.
