Nelson answered properly, “She is an employee of the Oconnor Group. I fell in love with her at first sight.”
“What attracted you to her?”
“Uncle, it seems you don’t have much confidence in your daughter.”
“Your status is not ordinary,” Reuben said steadily. Despite being in a coma for four years, he could still read people well. Nelson’s demeanor was far from ordinary. He didn’t believe this marriage was free from ulterior motives.
“Callie is now my wife. Whether in society or within the Oconnor family, I will protect her completely. You can rest assured about that.”
“And what about other matters?”
“What do you mean?”
“What if I ask you to divorce Callie? Can you do that?”
Nelson raised an eyebrow, a bit surprised. He seemed to understand whose temper Callie had inherited.
“Is it because of me?” He guessed it was due to his status, fearing Reuben worried his daughter would be wronged.
“You are the executive of the Oconnor Group. You can have any woman you want. Callie is pure-hearted, and as her father, I have to think about her future.”
These words were full of distrust and doubt.
Nelson slowed down Reuben’s IV drip, guessing he had seen those tabloid news stories, and said calmly, “I’m afraid that’s not possible.”
“What do you mean?” Reuben asked warily.
Nelson sat down, looking like he was negotiating at a table. “We did not sign a prenuptial agreement. If we separate in the future, she might be wronged.”
“Currently, she is my wife, living a good life. My grandfather treats her very well too. There is no reason for a divorce.”
“I don’t want to elaborate on our feelings. Today, I came to visit you out of respect and responsibility. As I mentioned earlier, I will treat Callie well.”
These words were quite sincere.
A man was trying to convince another man to entrust his daughter to him.
Reuben slowly calmed down, as if realizing there was no turning back. He closed his eyes and said nothing.
Nelson waited patiently.
After a long time, Reuben finally spoke, his voice trembling slightly, “I want you to sign a divorce agreement with your name on it and give it to me for safekeeping.”
The man’s expression changed.
Upon waking from his coma, Reuben’s first act was to seize Nelson’s weak spot.
He froze for a moment, his brows furrowing quickly.
But soon, his expression returned to normal, cold and inscrutable.
Reuben smiled like a loving elder, “I just want to ensure my daughter’s safety. Is that too much to ask, Mr. Oconnor?”
Nelson’s gaze turned dangerously sharp as he regained control of the situation. “If I refuse, what can you do about it?”
Reuben remained calm. He hadn’t seen much else in this young man but had noticed his concern for Callie.
“Then you and Callie might have conflicts because of me.”
Nelson quickly weighed the pros and cons in his mind. In some ways, he was already at a disadvantage.
Half an hour later, Nelson walked out of the hospital room.
Callie immediately looked up. “What did my dad say to you?”
Nelson tightened his arm around her waist, a hint of ruthlessness flickering in his eyes as he replied, “Just asked about some routine work.”
“And what did you say?”
Nelson suddenly gave her a penetrating look, gauging her reaction.
-Anxiety, nervousness.
What was she nervous about?
The man smirked slightly. “Callie, are you afraid I might harm your family?”
Callie was momentarily stunned.
