His brow furrowed deeper.
“Besides, the humiliation they gave is nothing compared to what you, Mr. Oconnor, have done.”
There was one more thing she didn’t say.
I am like this because of you, you high-and-mighty abuser. You have no right to scold me.
Nelson licked his upper palate with his tongue and stared at her outfit. “Who gave you these clothes?”
Callie, unaware of the gravity of the situation, continued to provoke him. “Do you like it? Do you also think it resembles someone from the past? I quite like it too.”
“Callie,” Nelson said in a low voice.
She raised an eyebrow. “Anyway, I’ve done nothing wrong, so karma won’t come its way. Unlike you…”
“What do you mean?” He propped one hand on the car door and ran a hand through his hair.
Callie felt a sudden surge of emotion as she looked at his suddenly unserious demeanor. Her lips parted slightly, unable to hold back. “Promiscuous.”
As soon as she said it, Nelson turned his head and, after a moment of calm, spat out each word deliberately. “Say that again.”
Realizing her blunder, Callie remained silent. Nelson sneered and then said lightly, “Let’s not cross the line.”
To Callie, this was a wake-up call.
Nelson suddenly felt a surge of irritation. At that moment, he slowly realized that between the two of them, it had always been a game of power and suspicion. She didn’t trust him, and he didn’t trust her either.
So he said something harsh. “I see other women outside, and you enjoy the world. Isn’t that great? Occasionally being together might mean we can spend the rest of our lives together. Isn’t that enough? Haven’t I been good to you? You can’t keep using my kindness to push your limits.”
The more accurate his words were, the colder they felt.
Callie gripped her phone tightly, the chill seeping into her fingers and reaching her heart.
The atmosphere suddenly turned cold.
The conversation ended there.
The traffic ahead eased a bit. Kieran started the engine, and the car sped off. It was going fast; Callie tightened her seatbelt and remained silent.
Nelson waited for a while before realizing Callie wasn’t going to continue speaking. The fire inside him grew even larger.
With a screech, the car abruptly stopped at the entrance of Paucaster Villa Complex. Nelson turned to look at Callie. “You have quite some pride.”
“Mr. Oconnor, you are mistaken. I lack nothing but pride.”
Otherwise, she wouldn’t have repeatedly given up her dignity after being with him.
“Did I say something wrong? What did I say wrong? To inexplicably endure your anger-sometimes I really want to ask, it was you who proposed this relationship in the first place. How did it turn out that I’m the villain now?”
After speaking, Nelson grabbed Callie’s chin and sneered slightly. “Regret it?”
“Yes,” she met his gaze.
Nelson just nodded slightly. “Too bad, the one billion dollars haven’t been paid off yet. If you don’t want others to suffer because of you, don’t think about leaving my side.”
The once romantic moments had now turned into threats and exploitation.
Callie fiercely shook off his hand, opened the car door, got out, and strode into Paucaster Villa Complex. Nancy saw her and said, “Madam, did you argue with Mr. Oconnor again?”
Again… Callie sneered. At this rate, “There won’t be many more arguments.”
Inside the car, Nelson leaned back in his seat with his eyes closed. For the first time, Kieran spoke up. “Why don’t you explain things to her?”
