Callie paused for just a second before throwing everything in her hands aside. She forcefully pushed his injured hand away, feeling the wound start to bleed again.
She turned to leave, casting him one last look of extreme disgust.
Her wrist was suddenly grabbed, and she heard the man’s cold voice. “Don’t try to win people’s hearts like I do; you won’t succeed.”
After nearly a year of interaction, this man’s constant caution and concessions were just his way of winning hearts.
Because he was adept at this, he could immediately see that Callie’s return was an attempt to mimic this tactic.
Ashamed and furious, Callie tried to break free, only to be held tighter. She couldn’t count how many times she had gritted her teeth: “Let go of me!”
Nelson’s rough fingertips brushed against her left hand, where her ring finger was bare. He also forcefully let go, his tone turning cold: “Tomorrow, I want to see a proposal on my desk for the future development of Shamar’s team.”
Callie stormed out, her high heels clacking loudly on the floor. She walked through the mess and heard his final words before slamming the door: “Don’t forget we’re still not divorced. You better restrain yourself.”
There was a hint of mockery in his voice, and Callie understood it well.
Passing by the pharmacy where she had bought medicine earlier, the young girl on duty was just getting off work. She locked the door and turned around, bumping into Callie, her eyes lighting up: “Oh?”
Her smile froze halfway, clearly seeing that Callie was not in a good state.
Callie nodded at her, unable to muster any extra expression. She touched her arm, feeling a chill.
The young girl watched Callie’s figure fade into the night, like a wandering heroine.
After that day, Shamar’s team merged with another group, including the profits from various research projects. Rumors spread within Oconnor Group that Shamar couldn’t manage a company and that Oconnor Group had to clean up his mess.
Little did they know that all this mess was created by Nelson.
Callie assisted Shamar with the aftermath. His mood was consistently low. “I’m sorry, Callie. If I were more capable, I wouldn’t have dragged you into this. I’ll find a way to repay those debts.”
“One billion dollars, how do you plan to repay it?”
“Before things went wrong, I borrowed some money from my father.”
Callie understood that the amount must be significant.
“And your father…”
“He’s very angry,” Shamar said with a bitter smile.
“Have you tried…” Callie hesitated, “asking Nelson?”
“I don’t have the face to ask my brother. He trusted me with the team, and I messed everything up,” Shamar replied carefully.
So Callie understood most of it; Shamar still didn’t know who the mastermind was.
Nelson had truly caused a lot of harm.
Now that she was out of a job, she could help him out. This matter was somewhat related to her, and she had to see it through to the end.
“Callie, I need to raise funds soon. Can you accompany me to a social event tonight? Of course, I’ll ask my brother first,” Shamar quickly added.
“No need to tell him; I’ll go with you,” Callie lied without changing her expression. “He’s in favor of me helping you with this.”
With that said, Shamar felt relieved.
The event was set at Kenker Hotel.
But Callie didn’t expect that the person who came to greet them would be Marilyn.
“You’re here?” Marilyn still wore a long white dress, walking gracefully and exuding elegance. She smiled and said, “You two look quite compatible together.”
