Chapter 57: Angelo

Matteo’s POV
I stood by the window pane, sipping the coffee that Ginevra had brewed for me. My thoughts still revolved around the discovery from last night and I imagined Aurora kissing another man and probably allowing him to touch her like I did.
I cringed at the thought of it, but then, there was a picture to show that she had done something like that.
It was these same thoughts that drove me to one of my clubs and nearly made me cheat on her. Nearly. But I couldn’t push through even though I tried. She didn’t smell like Aurora, neither did her eyes shine like Aurora’s smokey grey eyes.
I kept comparing the both of them till I left the club angrily and now I was doing the same thing.
A knock disrupted me from my thoughts, eliciting a hissing sound from my lips. “Don’t come in, Ginevra. I don’t need you right now.” I yelled but the door still pushed open with Angelo smirking at me as he approached me.
“I’m not your nanny, Matteo.” He joked and I felt like slapping the smirk from his face.
“What do you want?” I asked irritatedly.
“I just wanted to know how my only favorite brother is doing.” He said with a tone of concern and I took another sip from my coffee, allowing the hotness burn through my throat.
“I don’t know what to do about Aurora. Deep down I feel like trusting her but it’s so hard with that picture continously replaying in my head.” I confessed and Angelo patted my back.
He kept mute while I ranted on and when I finished, I felt relieved. It was nice to have someone hear you out.
“Look, Matteo, you are hurting both yourself and her. You went to a club yesterday and you couldn’t even bang any of the whores.” He stated and I glanced at him in surprise.
“You were at the club?” I probed and he shrugged. “I was just making sure that you were fine and no one took advantage of your weak state.”
“I’m still very strong even in my weakest state, Angelo, but I appreciate you having my back.” I said, forcing out a smile.
My door pushed open and Ginevra stepped in, a happy glow spreading over her face. She was dressed differently from what she used to wear. The flared pants and chiffon top was gone, instead, she wore a black body hug dress. Her hair was always worn in a bun and was let loose as they drooped over her shoulders.
“Why are you here?” I interrogated.
“I’m here to make sure that my godson is doing well seeing that your girlfriend did nothing but confirm that she’s a bitch.” She said nonchalantly and a wave of fury surged through me.
“Don’t you ever call my girl a bitch again. Whatever is happening is between us, so I’ll advise you to mind your own business.” I growled, causing her to flinch.
“I’m sorry,” She apologised and scurried out of my room, her face pale with embarrassment.
Angelo burst into laughter but my glare stopped him from further annoying me with his mocking laughter. “The old bird is hitting on you now?” He teased.
“I could beat you up, right now. This isn’t the right time to tease me,” I warned but he didn’t care about my feelings.
“Tell me the truth, Matteo. She felt so confident entering your room and I can tell that something had boosted her confidence.” He queried and I sighed, knowing that my brother wouldn’t give up the topic until I answered his annoying questions.
“She was once my lover.” I stated.
He tilted his head backwards in astonishment.
“Your lover?” He reiterated and I nodded. “When did the both of you get a good time together without my knowledge? You are so sneaky, man.” He said, sarcasm ringing in his voice.
“It happened when you were still a child. At that point she was the only one I could run to. Mother didn’t give a shit about me, she didn’t tend to my wounds after father finished hitting me for little mistakes.” I took a deep breath then continued.
“At first I was affected by her cold attitude toward me but later I got used to it and began to seek attention elsewhere. Ginevra was willing to give me such love even though it was forbidden and I rode with the wave till mother died the day she caught us.” I admitted, the waves of the past pushing me into sadness.
“I don’t quite follow, Matteo. How did mother’s death connect to you and Ginevra’s little make out?” He asked, the sarcasm and lightness leaving his tone.
It was hard to explain, but I had to tell him the truth, lest he hates me when he finds out later. “She had a heart attack and died when she barged into my room and found Ginevra riding me like a horse.”
Angelo’s mouth went agape with shock. I stared into his eyes looking for glints of judgment and disappointment but I couldn’t find any. Instead, he was filled with compassion and understanding.
“It’s fine, brother. You were going through a lot then found a way to feel better after father’s excessive harsh treatments. I wished she died under better circumstances.” He expressed and we hugged each other tightly, happy that I had a brother like Angelo who allowed me to be vulnerable without reminding me that I had to keep my personality as Capo.
My phone rang, causing the both of us to pull away from each other. I became more curious when Francesco’s name appeared as the caller.
“What’s going on?” I queried feeling tired even though I woke up not long ago.
“I know that I’m not supposed to interfere in your relationship, but I saw how sad you were last night and I decided to do my own digging.” He informed me with a cautious voice.
“And what did you find out?” I asked curiously.
“I think you should come over to the club, I’ve got the guy who thought that he could touch your woman.”
