Matteo’s POV
Since he was distracted by shooting the wrong person, I used it against him and fired a shot at his kneecap even when his aim grazed my arm. I gave him my deadly smirk which caused him to flinch as no one on the earth would plead with me to make his death quicker.
I shot his arm, his gun dropping from his hands as he collapsed to the cold ground while I rushed towards Aurora who winced at my touch.
“Relax, it’s me. I’ll get you to safety.” I said in a nearly crying tone.
The woman in my arms had taken a bullet for me without thinking. No one had ever done for me, not even my mother who I thought would show me the love and care I needed.
Sometimes, I wondered how I was still able to act normal and be tender with my loved ones.
“It.. hurts,” She stuttered and her lashes closed slowly.
I crouched and placed my left ear on her heart chest to check for her heartbeat. The rate had dropped so I carried her in a bridal style after warding off other shooters then used my men as cover till I got to the car.
I dialed Francesco’s phone and he picked, gunshots ringing in the background. “There’s a man I shot both leg and arm, I need you to treat his wounds then take him to the torture room. He’s going to be in for a long session of torture,” I growled.
“I’m on it, but I need some details.” He requested more respectfully than usual knowing that I was tethering on the edge.
“He shot my girlfriend but she wasn’t his main aim– I was. I want to know who sent those bastards to kill me.” I said and ended the call as I felt my temper resurfacing.
That was the last thing I needed as Aurora’s health was more important and I had to be in a calm state of mind to be able to take care of her.
We got to the hospital some minutes past 10pm with the street dead quiet apart from the cricket which croaked loudly. The lights gave a bright illumination to the front yard of the hospital and I parked the car, ensuring that my gun remained in its holster
“I need help!” I yelled as some nurses ran out with some stretchers. I’d already called my doctor so he came along with the nurses and together they placed her on the stretcher.
The back seat where she stayed was soaked with her blood but it was the least of my problems as I just wanted her to be fine.
They took her into the emergency ward while the nurses who had come outside changed their attire and wore some overall and their usual protective gear.
Doctor Luca, who was our family doctor and the owner of the hospital, approached me in a blue overalls and his ear covered in a cap and his hands in gloves.
“We have prepared her for an operation that she’ll be undergoing right now. And I promise to do all my best to ensure that she’s fine,” He assured me but I wasn’t satisfied.
“Thank you, Doctor Luca, but if you don’t mind, I’d like to be with her during the operation.” I stated as a matter of fact.
He furrowed his brows, his scrunched up face showing that he didn’t want to approve of my presence in the theater, but I was ready to end him if he didn’t agree.
“It’s not the best option, Matteo.”
“That woman over there means a lot to me and I know that I’m well coordinated so I won’t cause trouble for you. But trust me, Doctor Luca, things would end bloody if I’m not allowed to go in there.” I said in a low and dangerous tone that I usually employed whenever my demons thirsted for blood.
“Alright, Matteo. Come with me,”
I didn’t need to be told twice as I followed him through the hallway. My white shirt which I’d worn under my suit was soaked in her blood but it didn’t bother me even though some people at the reception stared at me in surprise.
A little boy raised his phone to take a picture of me but my mean glare made him flinch and he dropped the phone on his thighs.
?
They finally took out the silver bullet and placed it on a platter, while doctor Luca began to sow her flesh together. It would have irked some other people but I’d seen worse and I actually wished that I was the one being operated on.
I shoved the door open and headed back to the reception. Apart from my brother, I’d never been this scared of losing someone.
My phone began to ring again but I ignored it, not willing to speak to anyone until I was sure that Aurora was out of danger. The creak of the metallic door caused me to turn around as I faced Doctor Luca who emerged from the theatre room.
“She’s out of danger so you don’t have to worry. She has been given some analgesic which will ease the pain. The bullet grazed her ribs but she’s lucky not to have sustained any other serious injury.”
I heaved a sigh of relief and shut my eyes.
“Thank you,” I rumbled and heard his footsteps drifting away.
I returned to my car to get my suit and my eyes darted to a silver clutch bag. I smiled remembering how stunning she looked when I saw her in the dress I’d bought for her.
No woman I’d dated could compare with Aurora’s beauty. They couldn’t come close.
A vibrating sound emanated from the purse so I reached for it and opened it. A tiny dot blinked from the middle of the phone so I turned it on and found a missed call without a name.
The same number again and I allowed it to ring but I didn’t pick. I was about to put the phone into her bag when a message popped which called out my attention.
The deed has been done.
There was a smirking emoji beside the message which got me worried about who Aurora had been talking to. I couldn’t unlock her phone as I didn’t know her password.
The caller called again and I picked it, wanting to know what was going on.
“Hi, Aurora. I hope you are safe in that mansion,” His voice was laced with worry, but what caught my attention was his surprising question.
“Who are you?” I asked.
“I’m her uncle, Lorenzo and I want to be sure that my niece is fine.” He replied curtly like he had an issue with me.
“I’m sorry that I’ll have to be the harbinger of bad news but your niece just had an operation. My mansion was attacked and she was shot by mistake, nevertheless, she’s recuperating and out of danger.” I assured him.
“Thank you for telling me, I’m coming right away,” He said, cursing in Italian in the background.
