Aurora’s POV
She’s really free to leave?
I glanced at Matteo who looked impatient and ready to return to work at any moment, wondering who might have spoke some sense into him.
It wasn’t my problem because Giselle would no longer be in this hell-hole.
“Thank you so much, sir.” Giselle croaked, her voice laced with tears as she dropped to her knees and thanked him.
Matteo’s face was red with embarrassment as he pulled her up. “Just return home and take care of yourself.” He said and turned away from the both of us.
My heart brimmed with excitement at his magnanimity and compassion. Maybe he was different from his father, but I couldn’t just end my obsession for revenge.
“Don’t leave, Capo. I have something to tell you.” Giselle chimed in, while I squinted my eyes in surprise.
“What do you have to say?”
“You should look into Antonio. I don’t know the details but it seems like he was about to betray you before we had the argument today.” She advised him, her shoulders tense.
Matteo cocked his head to the side in displeasure and I wondered what went on his mind. He had already moved some meters away from us, so he reverted his steps and approached Giselle who tried to brave his intimidating stare.
“Why didn’t you say anything to me earlier?” His voice was deeper than usual, his expression calculative.
“You wouldn’t have believed me and I didn’t want you to think that I was looking for an easy way to freedom.”
“I might have killed you unlawfully.” Matteo muttered, digging his hand in his pocket.
“And you will still find out the truth with or without my statement. The only difference is the timing of discovering his betrayal.” She replied confidently like she was ignorant of the status of the man standing in front of her.
Matteo slanted a look at me, then averted his gaze to her.
“I’ll take care of it. Go and stay with your daughter.” He said and walked away.
I really wanted to run after him and push him into one of the empty rooms so that I could kiss him. But I didn’t want to confirm the rumors that might be going round in the city.
“Congratulations, Giselle.” I said and pulled her closer to me for a hug.
I wrapped my arms around her tightly as she sniffed on my neck. Warm droplets touched my body and I patted her lightly.
“You’re an angel, Aurora, and I regret being cold to you at the party. Even if I died, I would still be grateful to you.” She cried, her voice choking with tears.
“Don’t say that, Giselle. I hate it when a fellow woman suffers in marriage. Honestly, I hate everything that has to do with an arranged marriage.” I stated and she nodded in agreement.
“When I get home, I’ll ask my daughter if she really wants to be married to Danilo. I don’t want her to go through the same thing I did.”
I stared at her and knew immediately that she was going to do as she said, but there was no need for her to do it anyways, Danilo was a good person from what I saw at the party.
“It’s nice to hear you say that Giselle, but I know that he’s a good person and they will end up falling for each other.”
She scoffed and wiped her face with the hem of her dress. “Is love enough in our world? He might have to choose between her and his job one day and I’d like to save her the heartbreak.”
“Sure, love isn’t enough, but I can say that Danilo cares for her. While they were dancing at the party, his eyes were filled with adoration for her. If they stay together for a while, it will blossom into something stronger. But you can ask her if she wants to take the risk of being with him since her father is dead.” I advised.
It wasn’t my place to tell her what she should do just because I saved her life.
“I’ll go home now, I really need to rest.” She said with a yawn.
“Let me go with you,” I offered.
“Don’t worry. I just need you to properly thank Matteo for me.” She said with a grim smile and winked at me then walked away.
I didn’t need to ponder on what she suggested for so long as I saw Matteo sitting on one of the stools with a bottle of whiskey on his table. He nibbled on the rim of his glass cup but his attention was on something else.
“Hi,” I said lazily and took a seat beside him.
“Are you ready to go home now?”
“I am.”
He nodded and got off his stool and headed for the exit. I followed him at the back, thinking of the best way to appreciate him. For the first time, someone other than my uncle went out of his way to do something really nice for me.
He opened the car door for me and waited for me to get in then he shut it gently.
“Won’t you say anything to me? You’ve been very quiet since you freed Giselle.” I said.
He sighed and drove out of the building. “I’ve been thinking of a way to maintain the loyalty from the Outfit. I don’t need their problems right now,”
“You are a good person, Matteo and very wise too. They would be foolish to betray you.” I rubbed his arm causing him to park at a spot. “I’ve been thinking of a good way to say thank you.”
He smirked in his usual manner which made me lighthearted. Then I discovered something; his grumpy attitude made me sad.
“What are you thinking of? I’ve got several ideas if you need any.” He flirted, batting his lashes at me as he bit his lip.
“Don’t do that,”
“Do what?”
I wrapped my hand around his neck and pulled him closer for a kiss which surprised the both of us. I could feel his excitement as he plunged his tongue deeper into my mouth and trailed his fingers around my neck.
My inner thighs slowly became clammy with my wetness, and for the first time, I wished that I wasn’t a virgin so that I could push him over and ride him.
His phone rang loudly and a hiss escaped my lips as I pulled out.
“Excuse me, please, it’s Francesco.” He informed me and brought the phone to his ears.
I couldn’t hear what he said, but as I stared at Matteo’s expression I knew that something had gone awfully wrong.
“What’s the problem?” I asked and straightened my tank top which had ridden up my waist while we were kissing.
“It’s Antonio, he betrayed me.
