When I woke up, the Alpha was already gone. I grabbed the mattress, exactly where he lay when he was in my bed, I smelt it, closing my eyes in the process. I enjoyed the scent, it reminded me of the thing we did last night. I never had it that rough before. Never. He was truly an Alpha- a position I now think now he sure well deserved. I wanted to stand on my feet, but my legs still hurt. Hush! I killed the idea. I laid back on the bed, relaxing. I started smiling. To be honest, I didn’t know what was amusing me but I was just so happy. Drake’s picture was all over my head. It was as though he was still there with me. I could feel him. I could even hear his heartbeat even though he was not there with me. Even though my hearing abilities were good but it wasn’t close to picking up the sound of someone’s heartbeat who is more than ten, maybe twenty or more meters away from me. But Drake’s heartbeat echoed, rummaging in my ear. This was the effect of the mate bond, I reckoned. Yes, the mate bond is that strong. I have heard similar stories, so I knew the source of the sound without anyone telling me. I touched the area of the bond, whereupon I could feel the fresh scar. The good thing about it was it had healed. I mean it had healed completely. That was the advantage of being a werewolf. We have an incredible healing power than was beyond the norm.
I sighed. I put both hands beneath my neck, supporting my head. I shut my eyes, facing the ceiling. I tried to go back to sleep. I needed more strength so it was worth the effort. Gentle, girlish footsteps approached my doorstep. I sprung up to my head immediately, my eyes abruptly opening. Pardon me, I would have been killed by Audrey in a surprise attack. So it wasn’t really my fault that I had racked up my comprehensive alertness to my surrounding. If I had a personal weapon, I wouldn’t mind taking it with me to answer the door. But since I didn’t have any, I decided to use the alternative.
“Who’s there?” I said, my note of voice tick.
“It’s me Princess, Luna.”
I sighed. The Prefect had suggested we watch our backs. I didn’t know exactly who to trust. But then, even after the horrible incident, I still had faith in Princy. “Push it, I think the door is open.”
She did. She came in, wearing a zealous smile. She bowed to me. “I am sorry, I didn’t mean to disturb you.”
“It’s okay.”
“I didn’t know you would be in-”
“You don’t need to explain,” I said. “Come and grab a seat.”
She sighed. “Okay.” She sat on the sofa. Her bluish-gray eyes were the opposite of mine- sharp and maybe more attractive. Her blonde hair was in rolls, and they all hung down to her right shoulder. She was glowing this afternoon- the light makeup she applied had a role it played here. Her lips were rubbed with red lipstick making them look more defined. “How’s your health? Getting any better?”
“The pains are gone, completely.”
“You heal fast.” She complimented.
“Of course, we are werewolves.”
“Not just that.”
I laughed. “Maybe it has something to with my genetic engineering then.”
She smiled, the corners of her lips spanning. “Strong engineering in your body, huh?” she laughed. “Didn’t know you were funny.”
“Yeah. How could you have explained it? I went to hell, saw the devil, fought him, and came back unhurt. So?”
“So you are a rookie?”
“You can say that again, dear,” I said.
She laughed.
“What would you need? I have water in case you want to drink and have fruits, in case you want to crunch a bite,” I said.
“Do not worry, Luna” She said. “It is not your job. I know how and where to get it if I am thirsty.” She smiled again.
I nodded but fought against a smile. Never believed in my entire life that I would ever earn this level of respect from anyone- willingly.
“Alright. So, there’s something I have been meaning to ask you. I am not sure if you would be quite comfortable with it.”
“Yes, why not.”
“Okay, Uhm, did you believe my story?” I asked.
She rolled her tongue around her lips, her eyes flickering. “Which story?” she asked.
“I mean what I told the council about Audrey attacking me,” I said. “To be honest with you, I never knew that you would ever visit my room again after the incident.”
“Why do you say so?”
“Because I thought you would hate me forever after you heard that I killed Audrey.”
She laughed until she had to close her mouth with her left palm. “Of course, I did believe your story,” she said in-between laughing tears.
“Why?”
“Why?” she said, widening her eyes.
“Yes,” I said. “I mean why? Why did you believe the side of my story?”
She sucked on her lips and smiled. “On the night you were crowned a Luna elect, remember there was something I said about you amid everyone’s presence,” she said.
I furrowed my eyes. I tried to remember the event that occurred that wondrous night. There was quite a lot to remember. And to pick up exactly where Princy posed in the picture was close to impossible. So I decided to just ask. “What happened?”
She swallowed. “I said that there were a couple of things I heard about you and most of them didn’t look good even though it was my first time meeting you. So why should I have heard a couple of negative things about you when I didn’t even know you at all?”
“Oh, right,” I murmured. I was a fool. I didn’t remember that she made such a statement. And I wasn’t sure even if I did remember, I would deem it worthy to ask her why she said that. It might be because I was too excited. “Sorry I didn’t ask. Perhaps my mind skipped it. Or-”
“Or?” Prince said, dragging the word.
“Let’s not dwell on that. What did you hear about me?”
“I heard a lot.”
“From whom?”
Princy’s bluish-gray darted around. “Will you not speak?” I said, impatient.
“I am sorry I am saying this. I shouldn’t be telling you this but. . . but after what occurred, I began to realize that I might have contributed in one way or the other to what happened to you.”
“What do you mean?” I asked. I didn’t mean to make my voice sound so formal and threatening but it did anyway.
“I have always known that Bridget doesn’t like you. I mean, she has this kind of perilous hate for you. Even before I met you, I have already heard a lot about you from her, most of it appears to be the opposite of what I saw.”
Well, why wasn’t I surprised? “She said that you were an ass. What I didn’t expect was why Audrey would plan an ambush on you. I mean, I have never for once heard she had any threatening problem with anyone here in the pack. Yours became the only exception.”
“I think it is time you start believing that there are lots of things going on around us that you don’t erring know.”
“Hmm, I think so,” she said, standing up. The mafia long brown leather jacket she wore swirled below her knee as she stood up. I could almost see myself in the dark, polished pair of shoes housing her feet. “You need to know something, Luna. Audrey was a grand member of our pack. There are people here who didn’t like the idea of you taking her out for whatever reason it might be. She had a great fan base. You didn’t only spill the water in the bucket, You poured away the one in the tank.” She smiled, bowing her head gently. “You should be very careful. Bridget with the help of some aggravated members of our pack might not allow this to pass. You should be expecting the kick of a dying horse.” She bowed finally, her long shoe scratching the surface as she was leaving.
She had gotten to the door when I said, “Princy!” She looked. “Thank you,” I said.
Princy never had a problem showing her emotions through her cute smile. Her white teeth glowed as she spread her lips. “I will be back later. When you need me, don’t forget to call. I will be minutes away.”
I yawned and waved at her. She left. I went back to the bed, lying. I couldn’t resist thinking about what she just told me. Audrey had a large following? Does that mean I stepped on the toes of too many individuals without even realizing it? I wasn’t sure how much trouble I was in and I was sure as hell didn’t know who was with me or who wasn’t. One thing I was sure of was this, Drake got my back and he was the Alpha. Yes, he does and that was all I needed. Other things come secondary. Be it fear, enemies, strangers, even murderers- considering the extreme, it didn’t matter. As Princess said, the water had been spilled. Instead of focusing too much on how it was spilled, I think more focus should be given to how to dry the water from the floor. I closed my eyes, snuck in some bit of fresh air. The Alpha’s scent again oozed through the sniff. I smiled and then slept like a baby.
