After hanging up the phone, Ben signaled to Callie, “He agreed.”
She just smiled.
Appearing in the hospital in a wheelchair, she didn’t attract much attention and went straight to the VIP ward. Jaquan’s injuries seemed to have improved a lot; he was sitting on the sofa, leaning back, listening to Mikayla’s report.
When he saw Callie, he wasn’t surprised and waved to let the bodyguards allow her in.
Callie wheeled herself inside.
Mikayla stopped speaking when he saw her. Jaquan gestured for him to continue, “Go on.”
“After the factory incident, senior officials have their eyes on the shipment at the port. Should we take the national highway or the expressway? Should we make a few detours?”
Jaquan squinted his eyes, his exposed arm basking in the sun. “Let Edward take the expressway directly. The main force must be lying in wait on the national highway; it’s a feint.”
“Understood.” Mikayla finished his report, nodded to Callie, and left.
Only the two of them were left in the room. Jaquan straightened up, “Unfortunately, I’m also a patient this time, so I can’t serve you tea.”
“I’ve never liked tea.”
“Is your wound better? Dr. Ben is the top surgeon in Ylosea; don’t worry about scarring.” Jaquan didn’t care about her attitude.
“You’re well-informed.” Callie lowered her eyes. “I’ll be direct, Jaquan. Does the factory incident have anything to do with you?”
Jaquan paused, “In your opinion, does it?”
“Cora knows about us and even got hold of our meeting photos. It’s hard not to suspect that you had a hand in it.” Callie calmly stated, “Marilyn being able to return to the country was facilitated by you, right?”
Jaquan picked up his gold-rimmed glasses and slowly wiped them clean with a wet tissue. “So what?”
“Cora kidnapping me is not surprising, but kidnapping Marilyn, the eldest daughter of the Ellison family, is much harder.”
They looked at each other calmly. Jaquan raised an eyebrow, “How dare I put the eldest daughter of the Ellison family in danger? Do I look like I have a death wish?”
“I’m certain there’s a bigger planner behind Cora. They want me dead or Marilyn dead. Jaquan, you just need to tell me if it’s you.”
“No,” he answered quickly.
“Can I trust you?”
Jaquan leaned over and unbuttoned her shirt, one button at a time. She trembled slightly; she was always afraid of this powerful man.
“What are you doing?”
Her shirt opened, revealing the wound on her waist. Her slender waist was as white as the bandages, glaringly white.
Jaquan gently touched the wound with his finger and seemed to sigh. Then he looked up and met Callie’s eyes. “You can always trust me.”
Her eyes wavered.
For the next week, Nelson was handling matters in Ylosea with a young girl by his side. This unusual sight quickly spread among Ylosea’s subordinates.
During an inspection of a subsidiary company, at the dinner table, an executive tried to steer the conversation towards Marilyn. “Mr. Oconnor has never openly taken a woman on business occasions before. Miss Ellison, you must be very special.”
He hinted with meaningful glances.
Marilyn’s face turned red and then white. She hadn’t expected to be misunderstood and looked at Nelson, who seemed indifferent.
“Isn’t it said that Mr. Oconnor has a wife?”
Nelson’s face darkened slightly. Marilyn immediately smiled and replied, “Just rumors.”
Everyone nodded belatedly.
No one dared to persuade Nelson to drink, but Marilyn drank cup after cup at the table.
