Serene
The police moved quickly, but it was clear they were being cautious. They quietly reached our location, and I felt they belonged to a special task force handling this kind of operation.
They had already positioned themselves well, and I hoped they were ready for Sacramento’s right-hand man-the one I was watching out for. He was the most dangerous, and there was a big chance he could escape.
“Let’s go!” their leader ordered. I was about to follow when my husband suddenly turned to look at Enzo and me.
“Stay here and watch over your boss. Make sure he doesn’t follow. You know how important her safety is,” Alex instructed Enzo. “That’s an order.”
“W-Wait, what?” I asked in shock, but Alex didn’t look at me. Even if I wanted to follow, Enzo stopped me. I knew I couldn’t argue right now because we were in a dangerous situation, and my in-laws’ lives were at risk.
“What do you think you’re doing?” I asked him, frustrated.
“Sorry, boss, but I also promised Grandma I’d protect you,” Enzo replied, his voice firm.
“Are you out of your mind? I already agreed not to, didn’t I? My husband and my in-laws are there! You should be with them, making sure they’re safe!” I shot back, anger rising in my voice.
“I know, boss. But you have to understand. Your safety is more important to me.” His words made me even more furious, but I understood where he came from. Grandma and Alex had ordered him, and I knew Enzo and I treated each other like family. He knew I couldn’t stay mad at him for long.
I had no choice but to let Enzo stay by my side. Sure, I had planned to follow and maybe even fight, but I also wanted to make sure nothing happened to me or my baby.
At first, we just waited quietly, trying to calm down. I pushed aside my frustration with Alex and Enzo’s overprotective nature and tried to understand them. I’d deal with them later after we rescued Mom and Dad. Honestly, I’d feel much better if Enzo were inside with them, ensuring my husband’s safety. I knew Enzo would save him no matter what.
Everything was silent at first, but soon, I started getting restless when we heard gunfire. Enzo and I exchanged glances, and he shook his head as if telling me not to rush in.
“We go around the back,” I said quietly.
“Boss!” Enzo protested.
“We’re not charging in; we’re just waiting for Oswald.” I looked him straight in the eye, and after a moment, he sighed. I smiled when he nodded, knowing he couldn’t refuse me.
“If anything happens, stay hidden. I’ll handle him, Serene.” Enzo used my name, a sign that he was serious.
“Just make sure you don’t get hurt because I’m telling you, I’ll step in and help.” My voice was steady, filled with determination. Just because I’m his boss doesn’t mean I’m the only one who gets protection. He’s my family, and I’m ready to help him whenever needed.
“Fair enough.”
With that, we moved closer to the bungalow, crouching low to stay out of sight. The gunfire grew louder.
The land was vast, with the house standing in the middle. The area was well-lit, but thanks to the trees where Enzo and I took cover, I was sure no one could spot us from inside, especially with all the chaos of the fight.
The police yelling and the criminals fighting back filled the air. I scanned the area until I noticed something at the back. I signaled to Enzo, and we quietly followed whoever it was.
Enzo and I exchanged glances as we identified the man trying to escape. My friend pushed me back a bit while he continued to follow the man. I decided to position myself at the far end of the wall, where there was a post with no light. This was outside the property, in a vacant lot filled with tall grass and trees, perfect for hiding.
I was busy watching Enzo when I heard a rustling sound. Turning around, I saw Juancho holding a gun aimed directly at Enzo. Before he could pull the trigger, I quickly leaped toward him, catching him off guard as I grabbed for the gun.
“What are you doing here?” he growled.
“Surprised to see me, Juancho?” I smirked while gripping both his hands tightly. I squeezed the wrist holding the gun, trying to force him to drop it, but his grip was incredibly strong.
In desperation, I kneed him in the groin, making him yelp and clutch his lower body, finally letting go of the gun. “Don’t ever hold something you can’t handle,” I taunted as I picked up the gun and knocked him out cold with a strike to his head.
As I stood up, I noticed another man pointing a gun at me. I didn’t know him, but I could tell he was working with Juancho. Just as he was about to pull the trigger, a gunshot rang out, and he collapsed to the ground.
Behind him stood Princess. “Boss, are you okay?” she asked as she approached along with another man, likely one of Alex’s men.
“Don’t let this one escape,” I instructed, pointing at the unconscious Juancho. After receiving a nod, I looked at Princess and said, “Let’s go. Enzo’s over there.”
Princess and I sprinted, leaving Juancho to Alex’s man to check on Enzo and see if he needed help.
When we reached them, Enzo and the man were already fighting. I had promised Enzo I wouldn’t interfere, but Princess hadn’t made the same promise. As Enzo staggered from a punch, Princess rushed the man. Oswald, realizing he was now facing two opponents, grinned.
“Enzo!” I shouted, my voice filled with worry.
In truth, Sacramento’s right-hand man was incredibly strong, sharpened by years of experience. But I knew Enzo could handle him, even without Princess’s help.
“Is that all you’ve got?” Oswald sneered. “You’re the right-hand man of the country’s strongest organization, and that’s all you can do? And you even have a little helper who should just stay in bed!”
His words made my blood boil, which probably angered Princess even more. She launched herself at him, but he dodged her punch effortlessly.
“Stop, let me take care of that bastard,” Enzo said, and in that moment, he looked so heroic to me. I knew he would win.
“Wow, playing the hero. Are you sure you can handle me alone, Enzo?” Oswald taunted.
“Why not? After all, you’re a coward,” Enzo replied coolly. “I’ve never run from a fight, Oswald. Unlike you.”
Oswald’s eyes narrowed in rage, and he charged at Enzo, who was ready for him. With a clenched fist, Enzo delivered a powerful punch to his jaw after sidestepping his attack.
Oswald staggered backward, and Enzo followed up with rapid, unrelenting strikes, not giving him a chance to recover.
Just when we thought it was over, Oswald reached behind his back and pulled out a knife, stabbing Enzo twice in quick succession.
“Enzo!!” Princess and I screamed in unison as we rushed to him.
But before we could reach him, Enzo grabbed Oswald’s hand, holding the knife, and plunged it into his chest.
Oswald must have thought that he would be too weak to fight back because he had stabbed Enzo. Both men collapsed, but Princess caught Enzo before he hit the ground.
