Kieran’s POV
I always heard that fate could be a bitch and it could bite you in the places you never saw coming. I believed it, especially after everything I had been through in life. From my early years in my previous pack, I had a first hand share of what it felt like to be on the wrong side of fate. I counted myself lucky when I finally escaped there and I was more than grateful to have stumbled upon the next set of people I considered family.
It was stupid of me to think that the moon goddess and every other deity in charge of my destiny was done with my story. I should have known that it was only a matter of time before they would strike again, and just when I had thought my stupid fate wouldn’t rear its ugly head again, I realized I couldn’t be more wrong.
A low breeze rustled, pulling me back to the present. The first thing I came face to face with, was the face of the woman in front of me. A part of me hoped she would have disappeared by now.
I thought problems could disappear if ignored long enough. Apparently, that logic just didn’t apply to Sabrina.
She stood just a couple of feet away from me, and at the sight of her, I felt a rush of emotions swarm around me. Sadness, anger, happiness. It was a whole mess.
“Sabrina?” I called out, finally finding my voice. I was tempted to think that perhaps I was hallucinating and only imagining things. Maybe I had missed her so much that I was beginning to see things that weren’t there?
“What are you doing here?” I asked. Dumb question? I’m aware.
“Really? That’s what you’re going with?” Her voice was cold, and that was all I needed to know was that I wasn’t hallucinating. It was real, she was real and she was in front of me.
“Come on, Kieran. You should know better than that.” she drawled.
Her words didn’t sit right with me, but before I could give it any more thought, she continued.
“That’s the wrong question by the way.” She cut in again. “I should be the one asking you that question. So tell me Kieran, what the hell do you think you’re doing here? Around the Alpha king’s palace.” she said, placing emphasis on ‘the Alpha King’.
Wandering here had been unintentional, but even if it wasn’t, what right did she have to question me this way?
“I was just passing by.” My voice was low, Inexistent even. I didn’t want to fight her. It just felt impossible.
“I just wanted to get some things” I said and she glanced at my hand that was carrying the things I got.
“I don’t believe you.” She said, despite seeing that I was actually carrying some things.
She raised her eyebrows as her eyes raked over me, and I didn’t miss the disgust written in them.
“Did you really not know when you wandered here, or is this some kind of plot?” she asked.
“Plot?” I muttered. “I don’t understand what you’re talking about.”
“Of course you don’t.” She shook her head, a sarcastic chuckle slipping past her lips.
“You must think I’m stupid right? You came here to see if you would accidentally stumble on Xander.” she said accusingly, air quoting ‘accidentally’.
“No, no, no.” I shook my head slowly. I had no such intention. Yes, Xander had been on my mind. I mean, he always was but I didn’t come here to see him. At least not now.
“You’re getting it all wrong, Sabrina. You’re…” I started to explain but she cut me off.
“Am I?” She snarled again, causing me to keep quiet. I didn’t miss the dirty look she shot me as she spoke up again. Where did the kind, warm hearted Sabrina go?
“Look here, Kieran. Just tell me, how did you do it?” she asked.
“Do what?” I was confused, and I was pretty sure my face didn’t hide it one bit.
“I don’t understand what you’re talking about.” I said and she rolled her eyes in response.
“Don’t you dare try to play smart with me.” Sabrina hissed.
“You did something to Xander. Whether it’s a spell or whatever witchy tricks you have up your sleeve, I have no idea but in no way is it possible for you to actually be Xander’s mate.” she said and realization hit me.
Xander did tell me that he blurted it out to Sabrina.
She was obviously certain I wasn’t his mate though. I almost laughed, despite the hurt I was feeling.
“Sabrina…”
“I’m not done.” She hissed, taking a menacing step forward.
“I mean, think about it. It just doesn’t make any sense. Tell me why the moon goddess would pair a lowlife like you, with someone as perfect as Xander? You’re not in the tiniest bit compatible, so tell me what the hell you did to manipulate your way into his heart.” she said and I clenched my fists at my side.
I hated the way she looked down on me so much. We were such good friends. I don’t know where it all went wrong.
“I’m going to find out what you did and undo it.” Her voice pulled me back to the present.
“Believe me. I won’t stop until I’ve broken whatever fake bond you’ve managed to form and I won’t rest until I do so.” She said and I had finally had it. I needed answers.
“Sabrina, what exactly did I do to you?” I couldn’t help but ask.
The whole switch up even back at the mansion and now, was totally uncalled for. Sabrina and I barely ever fought, so why the cold shoulder, mean words and nasty glares?
“Why are you speaking to me and treating me this way? If I did something to you, you can at least tell me and we could sort it out peacefully. We’re supposed to be friends, aren’t we?” I asked, a last attempt at reaching out to her.
“Friends?” She scoffed before eyeing me. She gave me a dirty, pitiful look.
And I just knew, I knew I was about to hear things that I didn’t expect.
