Mavy rolled her eyes before linking her hand with mine.
“Let’s sit in the front,” she said as she turned her back on him.
A thing not many have done and survived but when it came to Mavy, she could do whatever she wanted and he wouldn’t bat an eye. He pretended of course but we knew it was shit. He’d never hurt her.
“Goddess, it’s so good to have you back,” Mavy said as she leaned her head against mine. “Are you here to stay?”
“Yes,” I gulped. She could always tell when I was lying. Was I lying?
“Hm,” she said. I know she had to have seen my mark. It was hard to miss. “How did Shane happen?”
“I didn’t do anything!” Shane called from behind us.
“I’m sure,” Mavy joked. “Did he kidnap you?”
“No,” I laughed. “Surprisingly enough, I came here myself.” Mavy’s eyebrow arched as she looked at me.
“Interesting. What about your mate?” She asked. Well, she was hitting it right on the nail today, wasn’t she?
“I’m leaving him. Well, I left him.”
“Mm… I didn’t know that was possible,” Mavy said.
“It is,” I said nervously.
She nodded her head as we made it to the sitting room. She made her way toward the couches, and I watched as she sat on the couches. I almost laughed. I was so used to her jumping up and down on it that Alpha Joshua told her to get down.
The smile dropped from my face when I remembered why her dad wasn’t here to tell her to stop. I sat next to her. Shane stopped where the hallway met the sitting area. He leaned up against a wall and we locked eyes as he stared at me.
“Have you heard of privacy?” Mavy asked.
“Nope.” Shane didn’t laugh but his eyes lit up.
“Anyway,” she said, rolling her eyes. “You and Shane yeah?”
“Yeah.”
“I’m glad you’re home.”
Her gaze drifted over to her brother as she tried to calculate the distance between us. He wasn’t in our space but if he wanted to listen, he would hear us. “A lot has changed since you left.”
“It has. Have you found your mate?” I asked.
We didn’t keep in touch when she went back home and I wish I had. Judging by her bare neck, I was certain she hadn’t.
“No,” she said. Her gaze was void of emotion as she said it and I couldn’t help but wonder about it. Mavy had been so set on finding him. Whenever she had the opportunity of leaving the house, she did and she searched for him. Goddess, she was the reason I had to go to the Crescent Moon Ball.
I couldn’t help but gasp. What would have happened if she didn’t drag me there? If not for Mavy, I wouldn’t have gone, I wouldn’t have met Ethan, and I doubt I would have ever met him. I wouldn’t have left the pack again. Maybe I could have seen him if he came over for the next ball that was held at Half Moon. I shook my head. I needed to stop going down the tunnel of what if. It was interesting though. If not for her, my life could have been different. I would have stayed here, Shane wouldn’t have been exiled. Damn. I can’t believe this. I’m unsure of what to think about this. Crazy.
Was Trent not her mate? I know she was hoping he would be. Goddess, we needed to catch up. There was something off about her and I’m sure with all of the shit she’s been through, it changed her but there was something going on with her and I wanted to ask. But I knew with Shane so close, I couldn’t.
“I stopped looking,” Mavy said. Her gaze was cold and I had to ask.
“Why?” I asked. “You… you were hopelessly romantic. You wanted to find him badly, remember? You wanted to ride off into the sunset together. What changed your mind?”
“Yes, I know. I stopped looking. And before you ask me why I don’t deserve him. I don’t deserve to find my mate. I don’t deserve blessing, I don’t deserve the blessing that comes with the mate bond. I don’t deserve the happiness that I would get from finding my mate. I don’t deserve that love, that kind of love, I don’t deserve that partnership.”
“Stop that,” Shane growled from the other side of the room. My eyes darted across the room to him. The vein in his temple was twitching and he was gritting his teeth.
“Stop what?!” Mavy snapped. Oh, shit. What the hell was going on here. It wasn’t often that Mavy got mad. Usually, it was all in fun but this Mavy, this Mavy was mad, actually mad. What happened between these two?
“You deserve all that happy shit you’ve always wanted,” Shane answered.
“How?!” Mavy yelled. Tears filled her eyes and escaped her eyes. “How can I even THINK of finding love? How can I have what he’ll never have?!” Her voice choked but the anger in her eyes was hard to miss.
“Are you still on about that?” Shane asked.
“Still? Are you serious? Still?!!!! How can I be over it when it just happened? It hasn’t even been a fucking week, Shane!!!”
“Fuck meeee,” Shane grumbled.
“No fucking thank you. You killed him, Shane, you fucking killed him!” Mavy’s sobbing, her cries cause her whole body to shake. I can’t help but wrap my arms around her. I stare at Shane and when he sees the question in my eyes, he shakes his head. He turns from us and walks towards the front door. Who did Shane kill??
“Tell me when you’re done,” he tosses over his shoulder before he slams the door shut. With Shane gone, Mavy wipes her eyes and looks at me.
“He leaves whenever we talk about him.”
“About who?” I asked.
