Adea
Shane dropped in front of me, and my eyes widened as I realized he took a knee. Even though we were away from the city area, I looked around to see if anyone was present to see. Alpha’s don’t bow and they definitely don’t get on their knees. Especially for another Alpha’s Luna.
Looking down at him, my gaze traveled over the top of his head, down to the broadness of his shoulders, and darted to his as they moved to pick up my foot. My dress rode up and I scrambled to pull it down.
If he saw, he didn’t show it. His eyes remained on my feet. His fingers cupped the back of my foot as his other hand pulled off my heel. My foot practically screamed in relief as he did the same with the other.
When both of my feet were firmly on the ground, my toes curled into the warm dirt. My shoulders relaxed at the familiar feel and smell of the forest. Closing my eyes, I breathed in a lungful of pine, wind, and earth.
It was as quiet as I remembered. There wasn’t a single sound coming from it. Okay, maybe it was more quiet than usual now that intruders were at its doors. Shane shuffled by my side but it wasn’t enough to demand my attention.
My eyes flew open at the sound of jingling beside me. When my gaze fell on him, his chin was tipped, his eyes were downcast, and his hands were on his belt. When he caught me looking, he smirked at me as he unhooked it.
“My eyes are up here, Sweet Ady,” he said cheekily.
“I wasn’t checking you out. I was seeing what the noise was,” I said in defense.
Shane didn’t say anything, he just stared at me as he yanked hard and pulled his belt clean off before kicking off his shoes. He bent down and when he straightened his back, he turned to the car.
I watched as he opened the door and threw his belt and our shoes into the back seat. After he said a few words to Devin and Liam, Shane closed the door. I noted the bottle of soju in his hand. I was about to tell him we didn’t need anymore when he moved.
Without a glance my way or another word, he took off towards the woods. He hauled ass as he followed a dark gray trail that was dimly lit with little lanterns. For a few seconds, I stared at him in shock. Was I so tipsy that I was starting to imagine things?
What in the world just happened? No, this was reality and I couldn’t help but laugh. This is not how I thought this was going to go. I don’t know how I pictured this going but it definitely wasn’t like this.
I thought that if I was lucky, he would have given me a head start to get as far away as possible before he hunted me down. If I wasn’t so lucky, I thought he would chase me like the psychotic killer that he was.
I wasn’t sure how I felt about this. Shane kept letting me down and not meeting my expectations. Normally that would be a good thing but I could feel myself letting my guard down and that wasn’t okay.
What had I been expecting? I have no idea at this point. What I do know is what I was not expecting and that was to watch as Shane ran like a child playing tag. Shane was unbelievably fast for his height and build. I could barely make him out in the distance.
His long legs were almost doing high knees with the way he was running and his hands were a blur at his sides. I wouldn’t be surprised if he tore through his pants with how fast he was going.
Shane was unbelievably fast for his height and build. I could barely make him out in the distance. I felt like our roles had been reversed as I chased after him. Somehow I had become the hunger and Shane the hunted.
If I didn’t hurry, I would lose him. My dress rode up as I ran but I didn’t have time to pull it down. The trees towered overhead as I sprinted into the forest. I was covered in darkness as I entered the woods.
Since I was alone and Shane was almost out of reach, I decided to pick up my pace. I stopped worrying about the way my dress kept riding up as I ran and instead focused on catching up to my prey.
The cool air whipped harshly against flushed cheeks and slashed against bare shoulders. I tried to breathe in through my nose and out through my mouth. I didn’t have to fake the smile that spread across my face or the laugh that rang from my chest.
Adrenaline pumped in my ears as I tried my best to catch up to him. My feet slapped against the pavement and my chest tightened and felt restricted with the need for air. I couldn’t stop now.
Shane was only twenty feet out in front of me now. I felt my heart leap with the idea of catching up to him and winning this silly game. My arms were pulled tight against my chest as I ran.
The lights along the trail ahead of me were a blur. My head felt light as I squealed when I realized he was only ten feet away from me now. My chest hurt and my lungs protested as I used air I didn’t have.
My legs pumped harder and my eyes widened as Shane came to an abrupt stop. Oh shit. No, no, no. In my rush to catch him, I hadn’t accounted for this happening. By the time I realized it, I was only five feet away from him and it was too late.
