“Can you drive a little faster?” Jaxon told the driver as he tried his best to reign in his voice.
Worry was the least way to describe what he was feeling. He glanced at Ruby who was sprawled
across his lap passed out. She seemed a bit pale to him and it was now he noticed how unwell she looked.
She passed out, he told himself, yet he still found it hard to believe even though she was right in front of him.
She had been completely fine before the press announcement, and she wasn’t sick beforehand, so he couldn’t chuck it up to her being ill. Or was it that the press announcement had taken its toll on her and her body couldn’t handle it?
So many possibilities crossed his mind but he couldn’t be sure of any one of them until they got
to the hospital which they should have reached but the driver and the traffic were pissing him off.
“What’s the hold-up?” He said not bothering to hold back the bite in his voice.
“I’m sorry sir, it’s the traffic.” The driver let out and Jaxon sighed. If only the driver knew how
close he was to losing it.
“Well we wouldn’t be stuck in traffic if you had driven a little faster now, would we?” He asked
but the driver remained silent and Jaxon let out an angry breath.
“Sorry sir.” The driver said in a voice that was barely above a whisper.
“Just get us out of this traffic as soon as possible.” He ordered them and got a crisp “okay sir” from
the driver.
Jaxon lost all interest in the driver and brought his attention back to Ruby. He had checked her pulse before and that seemed okay. She also looked to be breathing properly which put him at ease… For now, because he didn’t actually know what was wrong with her.
What he did know was that she wasn’t in imminent danger. He hoped at least.
Ten minutes passed with them still being in the same spot in the road and Jaxon thought he would explode from anger then and there.
“Could you pass another route?” He asked, irritated. He was tired of waiting and each crucial moment spent in traffic could be potentially harmful to Ruby for all he knew.
“I think the jam should be clearing up now, the car that broke down way ahead was just towed
away.” The driver told him as he glanced at the rearview mirror. Through the window, all Jaxon
could see were cars lined up waiting to move.
Jaxon sighed then looked away and settled back
on the seat. The driver better be right.
He was. It didn’t take five minutes before the road cleared and they were off again. But that didn’t stop him from telling the driver to go faster because they had wasted so much time already.
Ages passed when they got to the hospital and Jaxon all but stormed the lobby of the hospital with Ruby in his hands.
He was a well-known figure so immediately he walked through, he had at least three hospital
personnel waiting on his hand and foot. He got a room for Ruby in no time and one of the top doctors came and examined Ruby.
Jaxon wouldn’t be surprised if he popped out gray hairs with how much worrying he was doing.
The doctor had told him it would take a couple of hours for the results to come out but he was
determined to wait. And wait he did. In the meantime, they had put Ruby on an IV to give her
some strength.
“What’s the problem doc?” He asked when the doctor came back hours later with the test results.
Ruby still hadn’t woken up, and Jaxon had started to fear it might be more serious than he thought, though the doctor had told him otherwise.
“Is it serious?” He asked again anxiously.
“It’s not the kind of serious you’re thinking Mr Vaughn, it’s happy news.” The doctor told him with a smile and he frowned. He had opened his mouth to ask what he meant but the doctor spoke
again.
“Your wife is pregnant, congratulations Mr Vaughn.” The doctor said and Jaxon froze. Pregnant?
How? He and Ruby had always been careful so it couldn’t be true. A load of possibilities had ran
through his mind of what he thought was wrong with Ruby and pregnancy wasn’t one of them.
“Doc, are you sure there isn’t a mistake?”
“No, there isn’t a mistake. We used two ways to check and they both came out positive. She is
pregnant but not very far along so she hasn’t started to show.” The doctor confirmed and then handed him the test papers.
Still in visible shock, Jaxon took the papers and looked at them to be sure.
“She should be waking up any time soon so I’ll leave you too alone.” The doctor said but Jaxon
didn’t hear him. He was too caught up with the details in the test papers.
The doctor left and Jaxon took the time to go through the papers carefully. He still couldn’t believe it. He glanced at Ruby when he heard her shift on the bed and watched as she slowly opened her eyes and took in her surroundings.
“Gem?”
“Jaxon I- am I in the hospital?” Ruby asked, still groggy from waking up. He nodded slowly then
walked to the bedside.
“What happened?”
“You passed out after the announcement.” He told her and she sighed.
“Oh, I was probably just tired, you didn’t have to take me to the hospital.” She said, and Jaxon shook his head and then watched her frown at him.
“Well, I’m glad I did because now I’ve found out.”
“Found out what?” She asked and Jaxon replied to her.
“You’re pregnant Ruby.”
“… Pregnant?” Ruby’s eyes teared up, and before he could say or do anything, she started to apologize.
“I’m so sorry Jaxon, please don’t hate me. I really didn’t think this would happen.” She blurted out.
Then Jaxon stopped her before she could say more.
“Woah, slow down. Why didn’t you think it could happen?”
“I- I stopped taking the pills you gave me.” She whispered and looked anywhere but at him. So that explains it, he thought.
“Please don’t be angry with me.” She said again and Jaxon took her hands in his.
“I’m not angry Gem, really. It’s okay.” He assured as her tears continued to fall. He couldn’t stay
angry at her especially when she looked so apologetic. He was just disappointed but he would
get over it.
“Really?” She asked and he nodded.
“Really. I don’t mind having kids with you.”
“But, you said you didn’t want kids.” He did say that, but that was then.
“It doesn’t matter as long as I have them with you.”
