“I do.” Jaxon breathed out so low she could barely hear him.
“What?” She asked in shock. Was she hearing what she thought she was hearing?
“I said I do Ruby. I love you so fucking much.” He said in a firmer voice. Ruby seemed to have frozen in time as she processed what Jaxon had said. Jaxon had said he loved her. He loved her. Those three words repeated in her head over and over again as her heart swelled with happiness.
“Tell me again.” She demanded breathlessly. Jaxon gave her a dazzling smile and at that moment, she knew she was the luckiest girl in the world.
“I love you, Ruby.” He said, his words much slower than before. Ruby’s heart fluttered and she suddenly felt shy under his gaze with the way he was looking at her.
“And don’t even think of leaving me again.” He told her.
“I won’t.” She whispered to him. His hands were wound tight around her waist as he pulled her close to him.
“I won’t let you leave especially now that you’ve managed to work your way through my heart, and that’s something.” He told her. She believed him because when she first met him, he was so cold to her that she wondered why he got her to sign a contract and be his wife when he didn’t even like her.
“Have I?” She asked him playfully and he gave her a mischievous glare.
“You have. There were times you would occupy my mind for hours on end and no matter what I did, I couldn’t get you off my mind. It happened most often when I was working and don’t judge me, but I thought to seek a therapist to see if I had a problem.” He confessed without looking at her. Her mouth dropped open, a therapist! Was it that bad?
“A therapist?” Ruby choked out as she tried to hide her laugh.
“Yep.”
“And did you end up going?” Silence reigned after she asked that question which gave her the answer she needed.
“Oh my gosh, you did! And what did they tell you?” She asked, but her mind was occupied with the various ways she was going to tease him on end for it.
“They said, and I quote, “Have you considered that perhaps you like this person?” That was my first and last visit.” Ruby didn’t hold back her laugh this time. She let it flow then wiped the tears out of the corners of her eyes.
“You know, I tried so hard to hate you that when the therapist told me that, I had to reevaluate myself and wondered how hating you had turned to me loving you instead. You’re my rare gem, Ruby, you stole my heart and I’m never letting you go.” He told her with raw emotions evident in his voice. Ruby’s eyes were red-rimmed with unshed tears and her nose was stuffed. Her body thrummed with happiness as she listened to him.
Overcome with her joy, she flung her arms around him in a tight hug and stayed that way. He didn’t break the hug either and just relished being in her arms.
“I’m sorry I tried to leave.” She murmured against his chest. She snuggled deeper into him and listened to the way his heart pounded rapidly.
“I can understand why.” He told her and she thought she could almost hear the sadness in his voice.
“It was part of the contract and in all honesty, with the way I treated you at times, I’m frankly surprised you could stay with me.” He told her with a thoughtful look on his face.
“I guess so. But even after all that, I still find it in me to love you.” She said to him then watched his face shift from blank, too surprised, to understanding, and then to… Love. A light went off in her head as she thought of the times that she had seen that very expression on his face and could not identify it. He loved her and she could see it now.
“Tell me again.” He repeated what she said earlier and she laughed.
“I love you Jaxon,” she paused for a moment, “so fucking much.” She added after a thought and decided to copy him as well. He chuckled at her antics as his eyes shone brightly. She did love him a lot and she had been waiting to hear back from him for a long time.
” And I love you too.” He told her. She was never going to get tired of hearing him say that.
“You’re my wife Gem, and it’s going to stay that way.” He demanded. She nodded in agreement with him. She wasn’t going anywhere and would remain by his side.
Jaxon’s lips settled on hers in a sweet kiss. It wasn’t rushed. He took his time and explored her mouth before he pulled away, leaving her breathless. Jaxon straightened to his full height as a small smile splayed on his lips.
She wanted to say something but then her foot came in contact with the bags on the floor. They both looked down at the same time then Jaxon said,
“We should probably take those upstairs.” He helped her with her bags and all through that time, Ruby kept apologizing to him.
“I forgive you Gem, you don’t have to keep apologizing. And besides, I know why you did it.” He stated.
After they had succeeded in taking all her bags upstairs, she hugged him and again. He hugged her back as her head burrowed under his chin, hair brushed against him and it bordered on being ticklish.
“Let’s make it official,” Jaxon stated out of the blue and she scrunched her eyes up at him in confusion.
“What?”
“Gem, will you be my wife?” He asked and she chuckled.
“I will.” She replied.
“I promise I’m always going to be there for you and protect you.” He told her softly. It almost seemed like he was giving her a wedding vow.
“What about the contract? The one we signed?”
“I burnt mine a long time ago. I was never planning on letting you go.” He confessed and Ruby stared at him with love in her eyes.
She needed to find her own copy of the contract and get rid of it as well.
