She was still dressed the same as in the morning. It seemed she came straight from the police station to the hospital.
Elizabeth didn’t stop what she was doing. She looked up and said coldly, “We’ve received your compensation. Please don’t come bothering Corey anymore. You two have already broken up!”
Jade ignored her and just looked at me, her eyes full of regret and pain.
“Darling, I’m sorry… I didn’t mean it. I didn’t know…”
She choked on her words. When she saw the bandages on my face and hands, she suddenly slapped herself hard across the face, twice.
“I was wrong. I shouldn’t have hurt you. I killed your mother. You can hit me, curse me, whatever you want. Please!”
Seeing that I wouldn’t look at her, she fell to her knees with a loud thud.
“Corey, I’ll do anything you ask. Please don’t ignore me, okay?”
I was a bit shocked.
In the three years we had been together, this was the first time Jade had ever apologized, stripping away all her pride.
Before, she had always been the one to torment me from her pedestal. Even when she was wrong, she never admitted it.
If I ever pushed the issue, she would threaten to break up, and our roles would immediately reverse.
I would end up comforting her, begging her not to leave me. And if that didn’t work, she’d command me to do things-sometimes even forcing me to kneel.
And I, her humble admirer, did whatever she wanted.
I had never seen Jade so humbled, and I never imagined a day would come when she would kneel before me.
For a moment, I felt dazed.
Seeing me hesitate, a flicker of hope appeared in her eyes.
“Corey, I know I was wrong about what happened to Mrs. Richards. I promise I’ll never do anything like that again. From now on, I’ll listen to you in everything. I won’t do anything you don’t want me to. I’ll stay with you forever, okay?”
Suddenly, I snapped back to reality.
Yes, she killed my mom!
“Jade, stop calling me your darling. We’ve broken up.”
“My mom loved you so much, and yet you still had the heart to drive her to her death. You don’t deserve to bring her up again. Get out.”
I coldly ordered her to leave, but Jade shook her head, sobbing.
Elizabeth put down the bowl of porridge and spoke with sarcasm.
“Miss, how do you keep your face so thick?”
“Corey has already told you to get out. Why are you still hanging around like a leech?”
Jade yelled in anger, “What right do you have to talk to me like that? We just broke up, and you’re already clinging to him. You’re shameless!”
Elizabeth laughed and tossed her hair.
“When people treat you like a person, act like one. You may look decent, but you sure do talk nonsense.”
“You were the one who ran away from the wedding to be with another man. You knew this was bound to happen. You two have broken up-what’s wrong with me being with him now?”
“You didn’t cherish him when you had him, and now you’re here acting pitiful after being dumped. You’re all guts and no brains, spewing crap with every word.”
Jade was stunned by Elizabeth’s blunt words.
“How dare you insult me?!”
“Not only do I dare, but if you can’t hear me clearly, I’ll carve it on your tombstone. Buy one, get one free-I’ll even carve one for your lover!”
Elizabeth chuckled happily.
Jade’s face turned pale, and she pointed at her, trembling. “You’re just going to stand there and let her insult me?”
I shrugged. “You’re the one who refused to leave and invited the insults. Don’t blame me.”
In the past, whenever she was wronged, I would shield her behind me and fight for her.
Now, I stood by, watching as she was scolded. Jade couldn’t handle the contrast.
Furious, she sprang to her feet and stormed out, slamming the door behind her.
With Elizabeth by my side, I went home.
As we approached, the hallway light turned on, and I saw someone squatting by my door.
When we got closer, I realized-it was Jade.
