Hatred surged in his dark eyes. Ben and I had once been in love;we spent four years together, and he had even shielded me from harm. But four years ago, his business collapsed, and evidence of his illegal activities surfaced.
Ben had planned to take me abroad, but the night before our departure, I asked to visit the amusement park where we had first met. He complied with every request, even though he had been on the run from the police for a long time. We rode the Ferris wheel together, and when we reached the top, Ben pulled out a ring and knelt before me.
“I originally planned to propose abroad, but Sherlyn, I couldn’t hold back any longer.” “I love you and will always love you.” I extended my left hand. “I love you too.”
But as the Ferris wheel descended, a group of police officers surrounded us, guns drawn. Ben was held down by several officers, yet he stubbornly kept his gaze on me. “Dear, it’s not you, is it?” I looked at him coldly, remaining silent. His voice grew hoarse, his demeanor sinking into desperation.
As they shoved him into the police car, I threw the ring into the bushes right in front of him. His eyes turned bloodshot. “Sherlyn, you better pray I don’t get out, or I’ll make sure to kill you!” He meant every word.
But just before I lost consciousness, his hands suddenly relaxed as he slumped against my shoulder, his sharp teeth piercing my neck. “Sherlyn, I’ve searche.
I suppressed the tumultuous emotions rising in my heart, speaking with biting sarcasm. “Ben, are you really that shameless? After everything, you still want me to be your girlfriend?”
“Too bad I’m getting married in six months.”
After a silence as heavy as death, Ben released me and then forcefully shoved me to the ground. My knee hit the floor, sending a sharp pain through me. What bad luck-someone must have been drinking too much, and the cleaner hadn’t tidied up, so my knee hit a shard of glass.
Ben’s eyes were filled with disgust. “Have you forgotten there’s a profession called a mistress?”
I froze, rooted to the spot. “Ben, I won’t be a mistress, and I will never be with you again!”
Ben stared at me seriously, then chuckled. “You really think you have a choice?”
Ben’s methods were ruthless. Scandals erupted one after another at the club. Soon, drivers announced their withdrawals, and even those who had bought tickets for the upcoming races demanded refunds.
When Lucy came to find me, she suddenly knelt before me. I stared in confusion, reminded of when my mother had once knelt before me, begging me to return to Ben.
I spoke with a numbness. “Lucy, are you begging me to find Ben?”
I had thought of Lucy as a true friend; she was the first person I met here and the only one who knew about my past with Ben. Lucy looked a bit guilty. “Sherlyn, I saved you. Can’t you at least repay me?”
“And besides, Ben just loves you too much. Just sleep with him once, and it’ll be fine!”
It felt like a heavy stone had dropped on my heart, a dull pain throbbing intermittently. Trembling, I took out my phone and dialed Jonathon. “Can you… lend me a million?”
As soon as I said it, I regretted it, fearing he would ask why. How would I explain? But Jonathon didn’t ask anything. “Is a million enough? Remember to tell me if you encounter any difficulties!”
After hanging up, I saw the transfer notification on my phone, and warmth seemed to flow through me. I gave Lucy two million as compensation for her losses.
“We’re done, you and I.”
Lucy clutched her phone tightly, a single tear falling to the ground. “Fine.”
After Lucy left, I buried myself in my blanket and cried uncontrollably. Once again, I had lost a friend. Ben’s call came at that moment.
“Sherlyn, your friend just came looking for you.”
“What about it? With such a good friend, are you going to help or not?”
I gripped the corner of my blanket. “How do you know Lucy was just here? Are you spying on me?”
Ben chuckled softly. “I thought you were used to it by now. Besides, what would I do if my Sherlyn ran away?”
“Don’t lie in bed crying; it’s bad for your eyes.”
How did he know I was lying in bed crying? I jumped up in fright, searching the room for any sign of Ben or surveillance equipment.
Clutching my phone, I felt on the verge of a breakdown. “Ben, can you just let me go?”
