The Unveiled Past: LYSANDER
Nothin’ seemed to be changin’. It didn’t look like there would be a change in one way or the other, but I did not stop lookin’ forward to the day of my redemption and if there would be none, wasn’t it a good thing?
Linda.
No, Nyssa as she said her name is, had been nothin’ but totally supportive.
Startin’ from the moment she came to take me with her from the hospital, down to this very moment. With all these thoughts in my head, I stared at the ceilin’ as I lay in wait for whatever it was that would take place next.
Suddenly, a knock on the door caught my attention. I was forced to sit up on the bed, callin’ out to her. Her name was no longer hard to recall, even though I mixed it all the time with the Linda I had already become used to.
“Good mornin’, Lysander,” she walked in, smilin’. Her smile was familiar but I couldn’t lay my hands on it. She walked in further and shut the door, turnin’ around to meet my gaze. “How are you today? Did you sleep well?”
Did I sleep well?
“Yes,” I let out a smile that was still plastered on my face. “Good mornin’, Nyssa. How are you doin’ and did you also sleep well? Why do you look new also?”
“I slept well, Lysander. Thank you.”
That wasn’t all I asked, or was it? I watched the woman reach closer, changin’ her mind and movin’ farther from the bed a little. What changed her mind? Nyssa took a seat on the couch not so far from the bed.
She looked at me and started. “I thought I should let you know I was leavin’ the house. I need to be somewhere in the meantime. I know we’ll see when I return in the evenin’. Everythin’ you’ll be needin’ is in-”
“No.”
It was me who cut her short. What was she even sayin’? Did I ask her to no longer stay with me? This house was hers also or wasn’t it? I tried to stand on my feet but what did it change? I sat back and looked her in the face. “Why?”
“Why what, Lysander?”
“Why are you leavin’?” I mouthed. “Am I becomin’ a monster? The monster people talk ’bout on the internet? I see it on the phone all the time and I can’t even recall all of these. What do you want to do? Walk out on me.”
She got off the chair, reachin’ me soon. “I wasn’t leavin’ you, Lysander. I’m only goin’ out to see my friend. She knows I am stayin’ with you and wants some time with me. That’s all. No one is walkin’ out on you.”
Was I this insecure before that accident?
“Thank you.” I heaved a sigh and got on my feet. She was on her way to the door but turned to say somethin’. Somethin’ she must have forgotten to say. “What is it?”
“Take a bath and eat somethin’ when I am gone. You can get on with it right now.”
“Yes, Nyssa.”
“And let me know if you need somethin’. I saved my contact on your phone so do the callin’.” Sayin’ these words, she turned and faced the door once more.
I snatched my towel from the wardrobe and walked into the space. After my bath, I was all ready for the day, walkin’ back into the room with a towel tied around my waist. I didn’t need to ask before understandin’ that the woman was gone from the house, leavin’ me alone to myself.
Did she not say I would have dreams?
Why was I yet to have one?
Did she lie ’bout it to me? I wondered over and over again, walkin’ into the outfit and lookin’ in the mirror to be certain that I looked good. I confirmed with a nod before walkin’ out of the space, reachin’ the kitchen space as I perceived an aroma I had become used to.
Why pasta?
Again?
For how long?
Did she mean it when she said a meal can help me recall my past? Takin’ a plate from the rack, I dished my meal and made it to the diner where I sat down to eat.
As soon as this was done, I felt dizzy for no reason.
Why?
Didn’t I sleep well the other night?
As I managed to walk to the kitchen where I did the dishes quickly, I managed to walk back to the livin’ room where I settled on a couch.
My eyes then shut.
A lot of thoughts ran through my head, and I opened my eyes to think properly.
What was my past like?
How do I get access to the things ’bout myself that I need to know? The only information ’bout myself that I knew was the fact that my name had been Lysander from the onset, and this was with aid from the doctor who called me when he walked into the ward that day.
Suddenly, my eyes shut again.
I could see myself somewhere, with people I recognized only in this realm. Maybe I would when I woke up, but I concentrated more on knowin’ what this was ’bout.
Shiverin’ on the couch where I relaxed in this space, a man walked down the stairs with a box. There was a woman behind ‘im who held more boxes and the two ran in my direction. “Father, please. I have nowhere to go from here. I’m sure you know Mother will not allow this.”
“Your Mother is dead!”
The woman who came down the stairs with ‘im, said as she threw the box in my direction. “I am your mother. Stepmother and will say whatever happens in this house. Now, you will leave this house and not come back here.”
“This is my Father’s house.”
“You can’t be wicked to me, Olivia. I own a spot in this place and will not leave.” Just as I was speakin’, a large hand hit my face, pushin’ me to the floor where I stayed on for moments, not believin’ myself.
“Stand up and leave this place. Your time in my house is over. Your Mother is dead. It’s high time you know how much hate I have had for you since your birth!”
Right there on the floor, I sobbed.
My hand on my cheeks and my shaky legs. The two turned around and walked away, leavin’ me on the floor where I was still seated. Where do I go?
