The Double Agent: NYSSA
What could I do?
There was no way I would leave the house for that of Lysander’s again.
He was not safe to be with, for all that I knew so I stayed back in the place I believed was very safe for me.
Ophelia avoided me.
Somethin’ Kazmir must have commanded ’cause even from afar, she looked like she had a lot to say and there was no way I could know if she didn’t even speak to me.
“Good mornin’,” the coldness in her tone came at me this mornin’. “Did you have a good night’s rest?” She walked to the livin’ room, settlin’ on a couch not so far from where I sat. “Nice nightie.”
I looked at the nightwear, wonderin’ also what was nice ’bout it. “Thank you,” I muttered, fixin’ my gaze on the screen of the television once more. “I had a good night’s rest. Did you also sleep well?” With a smile on my countenance, I asked and she nodded with a smile she offered me back – also adjustin’ on the couch.
“Is there somethin’ you need?”
She looked at me, shakin’ her head and lookin’ back at the screen. “Not at all, I just wanted to talk to you ’bout somethin’.” The smile was still on her countenance and she looked at me once more, lookin’ away the next time. “It’s ’bout my brother, Kazmir. I thought I should talk to you ’bout it before any other person.”
Oh really.
I adjusted on the couch, completely takin’ away my gaze from the screen of the television. It was obvious to the woman at this point that I was very interested in whatever it was she had to say to me, and she smiled, doin’ the same by facin’ me and completely lookin’ away from the television screen.
“I know you two are not on good terms, Nyssa-” she started, already pissin’ me off but there was no way I could tell my mind. “-but you should also know that he didn’t ask for this.” The smile on her face was gone and her countenance – more serious than I would ever imagine. “We’re tryin’ to help in the way that we can, and he needs you to help too, in case you don’t know.”
“I see and understand you, Ophelia-” I gave a nod. “-but I don’t have issues with my husband either. I believe I am angry ’cause he didn’t tell me these things, but waited on me to find out by myself. How can I trust ‘im with these traits he’s showin’ off? Would you trust ‘im if he was your husband?”
She shook her head.
Somethin’ I wanted to see.
“That’s what I wanted to hear, Ophelia,” I affirmed with a nod, smilin’ once more. “He is my husband and why won’t I support ‘im in the way I should?” I faced the screen of the television once more and posed another question. “What do you want to have for breakfast? I’m yet to make somethin’ for the both of us. That’s Kazmir’s meal on the table and this is ’cause he’ll be leavin’ for work soon enough.”
“Anythin’ would do,” the woman got on her feet and walked in a direction. “As a matter of fact, I’ll love to handle the meals for today – if you let me, of course.” She walked into the kitchen, while I relaxed my back on the couch – waitin’ for the meal to be ready.
And why was Kazmir not on the table yet?
Wasn’t he goin’ to work? I had woken up to the sound of water drops in the bathroom and knew he was takin’ his bath, but why was he yet to make it to the livin’ room after almost an hour?
I thought ’bout it, finally standin’ on my feet. My legs walked towards the stairs and in due time, I caught up with the door of the room we share. “Can I come in?” I knocked and the door opened on its own. “Is everythin’ okay with you?” I walked to the bedside, takin’ a seat on it and next to ‘im. “What is the matter?”
He shook his head, starin’ at his phone.
“What is it?” I asked again.
“If you’re not goin’ to talk to me, how can I trust you?” I stretched my hand and took the phone from ‘im, takin’ a look at what was written on its screen.
“What’s a Theodore Crowley?” I looked at ‘im and at the screen once more. “And what does he have against you? What’s the meanin’ of this message? I don’t think I understand anythin’ that is written here, Kazmir.” I looked at ‘im again and dropped the phone on the bed.
“What is this ’bout?”
“Theodore Crowley is a business rival,” he let out, standin’ on his feet. “I don’t know what he wants with me this time around. He’s been jealous of me for a long time and I don’t have the slightest idea why he wants what I have. I have threatened to take ‘im to court and did that, too, but he keeps winnin’.”
“Okay-”
He sat on the bed again.
“Darius reached out to me while I was gettin’ ready for work. He was able to get information from a spy who has been workin’ for us since a long time ago. This person let Darius know of Theodore’s plans and it has to do with takin’ over one of my companies. How he knew ’bout your dilemma, I don’t know. Do you have a friend that knows ’bout ‘im? Anybody mentioned his name durin’ your conversations before?”
I thought ’bout it. “No,” I said finally. “What can I possibly have to do with it? I don’t know ‘im or any of his family members. How did I get into the battle?”
“I don’t know either,” he let out. “Darius said a lot of things. The spy said they include you in their conversation and he has plans for you – plans he is yet to reveal and there’s no way I’ll watch this happen.” He got on his feet, pacin’ the space with a grimace on his countenance. “I’ll not allow anythin’ to happen to you.”
What was goin’ on?
Who is this man?
I got on my feet and paced the room also, not knowin’ what to do or rather, what to think. How does Theodore Crowley know ’bout me? What does he even know ’bout me? Who gave the information ’bout me to ‘im? I thought ’bout comin’ up with an answer.
“Someone close to me must have done this-” I turned to face the man who looked depressed. “-but who could have done this and why? I don’t have friends. It’s just Ember, Ariadne and maybe Lysander.” I turned to look away when I mentioned the man’s name, turnin’ around again to look at ‘im.
“But I’m also very sure that Lysander will not try to hurt me. Or will he? Do you think it’s Ember?” I was tired of pacin’ the space so I took my seat on the couch not so far from the bed.
My gaze fixed on the screen of my phone for moments before finally standin’ on my feet and headin’ towards the door – with the many thoughts goin’ ’bout in my head.
“Kazmir, you should eat before your meal gets cold. And try to go to work. Ophelia and I are safe in this house, mm?” I walked out, catchin’ up with the livin’ room and also stoppin’ in my tracks to inhale the aroma that filled the space.
“What did you do, Ophelia?” I walked to the set diner, takin’ a seat. “Thank you for your help.” I started eatin’ but while I did that, many thoughts came runnin’ ’bout my head and I struggled to come up with an answer – failin’ in the end.
